It always rubs me the wrong way that characters like Lysithea and Sylvain are touted as if they would ever legitimately be okay with what Edelgard is doing. Just because they mention disliking crests in some fashion does not automatically mean that they agree with Edelgard.
And it robs two well-rounded and nicely developed characters of their depth and agency just to make them a puppet for Edelgard’s cause. Yes, Sylvain doesn’t like the crest system, but he’s also one of the smartest characters in the game and as such realizes all the faults in Edelgard’s plan. Not only that, but he also “highly values his friends” (coming straight from the mouth of one of his three best friends).
He absolutely would not betray them to join the Empire and serve his own needs. Sylvain is the type of person who will always put his friends first. Always. Add on to that the fact that Sylvain is able to eventually resolve the whole crest system issue peacefully and diplomatically in his endings anyway. Because he knows that trying to force change down people’s throats will only make things worse and understands the importance of compromise.
And as for Lysithea, she doesn’t even ever mention the crest system in the first place (barring her OOC CF Counterpart). Her thing is entirely different (no one in the Alliance ever talks about the Crest System). For Lysithea, her crests are a deep source of trauma for her, so she hates the very notion of them being brought up. She also hates both the Agarthans and the Empire for what they did to her (because yes, both were involved in that). And she would never join Edelgard’s cause if she were aware of all the morally reprehensible things Edelgard was doing with the Agarthans, no less.
Furthermore, like Sylvain, Lysithea herself is also one of the smartest characters in the game. And in her one in character moment in CF, she brings up the fact that Edelgard’s war won’t actually end up solving anything in the long run. Because she too understands all the inherent flaws in it.
And this is why neither of these characters should be considered “Honorary Black Eagles” (unless it’s SS Black Eagles). Because it fundamentally strips away all of their character depth into one single part of it, turning them into one-dimensional characters that only care about crests and nothing else. When realistically speaking neither Sylvain nor Lysithea would ever join Edelgard in her cause.
