without a hint of sarcasm, this is one of the most compelling wrestling matches i have seen in my entire life, and i've been watching pro wrestling since literally the day i was born.

zsj and tom lawlor are two of the best pound for pound wrestlers in the world, and tom lawlor absolutely deserves his flowers for this match. zsj brought the grappling, tom lawlor met his grappling expertise and brought the striking, which zsj matched perfectly as well.

throughout the match, zsj continuously goes back to what he knows best: submission holds. it's shown that tom lawlor struggles to keep up with zsj but still manages to survive zsj's lethal holds. most of this match is spent on the ground, but it's never boring, never dull. the amount of limbs bending the wrong way in this match is enough to make anyone wince. when zsj starts striking with tom lawlor, giving him a slap as both men are tangled up in ankle locks, tom lawlor shows him that he isn't playing around by delivering a slap that knocks zsj to the ground. tom lawlor's chops are horrific as well, but zsj disrespects him by saying it was meh.

more wince-inducing striking, with tom lawlor maintaining the edge at this point. when lawlor makes the mistake of leaving himself open to a zsj attack, though, zsj capitalizes in the most painful manner possible by isolating and assaulting one of tom's body parts.

tom lawlor begins bleeding at this point, i can't quite tell if it's from his nose or his mouth but he looks hot as fuck so idc either way. zsj's cocky ass keeps taunting tom, which infuriates him more, and he drops zsj with a series of chops to the gut after a short combo, gives zsj a kiss goodnight then drops him with an exploder suplex.

every little mistake by tom lawlor is punished to the max by zsj, when he misses a roundhouse to the head zsj plucks his leg out from under him and puts tom to sleep with a lethal penalty kick that would make ronaldo blush. zsj tries to out-strike tom lawlor, gets punished by an ankle lock, but manages to scramble out and put lawlor in an octopus hold before lawlor puts zsj into an ankle lock, tries to swing into a rear naked choke of sorts, and the two men squirm around for a bit before they reach the ropes and are forced to break it up. at this point i'm realizing how hard this match is to keep up with... (i have it open on my 2nd monitor to write as i watch) zsj kicks tom in the gut, tom leaps up for an enziugiri but misses the mark, he gets caught in a pin by zsj but forces him into a rear naked choke. zsj rolls into another pin, but tom rolls him into another rear naked choke! only 10 minutes in and i'd likely already rate this match 4 stars. but alas, zsj gets to the ropes and the match will continue.

tom lawlor kicks off of the corner and puts zsj in a guillotine, but zsj isn't having tommy's bullshit so he lifts him into a michinoku driver. tom catches a zsj penalty kick, zsj gives him a few slaps, tom responds with some forearms which zsj shrugs off before leaping up with a knee which takes out zsj. zsj starts to stir and tom practically beheads him with a roundhouse to the head, followed by a penalty kick, but zsj kicks out still! tom lawlor gets him into a straightjacket, but zsj rolls out and puts tom into a pinning scenario. after a short scramble, neither men gets the win. zsj kicks him in the face, tom lawlor gets the enziugiri, attempts to put zsj in a crucifix pin (big mistake, tommy...) but zsj lets go of his weight and pins lawlor. lawlor kicks out and they scramble again, but zsj rolls lawlor's arms under himself and props lawlor's body up onto his shoulders which is enough to get the win.result: zack sabre jr. retains his championship

⭐⭐4/5 stars⭐⭐ not surprising that mixing a former ufc fighter in tom lawlor and a legitimate grappling mastermind in zsj would reward you with such a phenomenal match. it's just hard to believe that such a phenomenal match happened on a new japan strong show, given how they don't tend to be so nice to nj strong. i'd give it 5 stars, but i don't really want to break my own star scale very often, if at all, and i know that there are matches that deserve a higher star rating than this. but still, excellent match.

also, commentary team is very mixed, either doing great or doing TRASH.

also also, i love zsj because he's fucking based.

i've actually never watched this match before so all of my thoughts are pure, but i know bryan danielson is a phenom so this match cant be bad :)

danielson's final countdown entrances in roh always give me chills. besides that, i'm not gonna talk about the entrances because morishima didnt have a super special one tbh. though his theme song does kinda go hard tbh :p

the crowd's chanting loud as fuck but this audio quality sucks ass so i cant quite tell what. but they're very excited about saying it!! anyways, danielson opens by targeting big morishima's big legs, something he'd continue to do for most of the rest of the match. when takeshi forces danielson to the ropes, he shows off his power by wailing at danielson's head before the tinier american dragon can wiggle out and continue to chop away at the legs of morishima.

bryan danielson's mobility is a big factor in this match as he tries to evade takeshi morishima whilst also trying to use his fantastic wrestling. it's a tough mix, as takeshi hits HARD, proven when he pulls danielson in and wails at the back of his head. danielson wiggles out and continues to kick at his legs, but morishima continues to push silently towards danielson. when danielson gets cornered, morishima hits him with a flurry of forearms and punches to danielson's head. the ref goes to check on danielson, but takeshi lays his massive foot along danielson's neck and upper chest and stands on him for a moment. so far i'm thinking that morishima's style reminds me a lot of an old king's road style you might see from someone in prime AJPW, and apparently he was in AJPW for 2 years from 1998 until 2000!! the more you know! anyways, back to the match. danielson gets some more kicks in, but takeshi forces him back into the corner and stomps on him a bit before whipping him to the corner and driving his big ass boot into danielson's face. morishima catches danielson with some more kicks as danielson is laying down on the mat, paces around for a bit before lifting him up and chucking him out of the ring like a little kid. morishima follows and whips him into the barricade, puts him on a chair and boots him into the barricade (i winced so fucking loud istg) then backing up and hitting a cannonball into danielson which injures danielson's eye. danielson dodges a second cannonball attempt and lifts morishima over the barricade.

danielson does a springboard crossbody off the top rope, from the ring to morishima who's still in the crowd. in danielson's older age, you forget that he used to move like this, because he's still just as good on the mat as he was 20 years ago. bryan and takeshi go back to ringside and danielson forces takeshi's massive leg over the guard rail before attacking it with a chair! after this, they return to the ring, and danielson dives from the top rope hitting morishima with a dropkick that barely affects him. morishima attempts a lariat, which danielson ducks, but danielson hits the ropes and morishima practically beheads him with a scary lariat. takeshi lifts danielson for a backdrop driver, which danielson reverses into a pin. danielson gets off a little combo before takeshi drives him to the mat with a massive forearm. danielson rallies, hits another combo but takeshi smacks him with another mean forearm. morishima hits the ropes for a hip attack, but danielson sweeps his legs out. after some leg kicks from danielson, he locks in an achilles hold on morishima, which almost ends the match before morishima gets up and chucks danielson with a german suplex. morishima hits a massive uranage for a 2-count, before he scales to the second rope. danielson gets up, halts morishima's scale to the top, but is shoved down to the mat. takeshi goes for a missile dropkick, but danielson sidesteps and goes back to work with a leg lock. takeshi gets to the ropes and both men are down. as they both get up, danielson attempts a german suplex, but he can't get morishima up. morishima attempts a german suplex of his own, but danielson kicks out and hits the ropes, which takeshi checks with a thesz press. after some strikes, danielson squirms out and locks in a deep half crab in the middle of the ring, but morishima rolls out and kicks danielson in the head to break the hold. morishima gets up and boots danielson in the head again, goes for another backdrop driver which danielson flips out of and gets a small package which morishima kicks out of. 2 rolling elbows from danielson and a roll-up, but morishima kicks out again. danielson goes back to the legs and morishima's feeling the burn. danielson attempts a sunset flip, but takeshi just sits down on danielson's upper chest, which can only get a 2 count. morishima goes for a running lariat, but danielson ducks and hits him with a german suplex for a 2-count before danielson goes to the hammer and anvil elbows. (fun fact, that's one of my favorite moves!) morishima fights his way to his feet, but danielson continues to assault the legs, and takeshi finally goes down! danielson grabs the arms and begins stomping in the head of morishima, which can only get a 2-count, but danielson locks in cattle mutilation, yet still can't put away takeshi mfing morishima!! danielson lifts morishima to the top rope and attempts a belly-to-back suplex, but takeshi falls on top of danielson yet can't capitalize... morishima gets back to his feet and delivers a firm forearm followed by a stiff kick, before they exchange strikes. danielson won't stay down, so takeshi flattens him with another lariat, which only keeps the american dragon down for a count of 2. at long last, takeshi morishima lifts bryan danielson do his feet, and drops him with a backdrop driver, which is just enough to get the 3-count. result: takeshi morishima beats bryan danielson by pinfall

you'd be hard pressed to find a better match anywhere on the planet, in any era. takeshi morishima went from a wrestler i had never heard of before immediately to someone i wanted to watch more of, just from this match. bryan danielson also deserves his flowers for working such an even match with someone 200lbs heavier and half a foot taller than him. bravo!! i definitely see myself watching this match many, many, many more times.

atsushi onita vs. terry funk in a no-rope exploding barbed wire time bomb deathmatch - fmw 4th anniversary show (5/5/1993) hey, this one's on youtube!

--- match analysis ---

gory, gruesome, gross. it's a slow burn but when it gets going oh my GOD is this match good.

fmw crowd is absolutely red hot for onita (who has the best version of wild thing ever as his theme song do NOT @ me). onita's shown walking through the backstage area, walks past terry funk (who's already here in this video? idk if he had an entrance or not) and enters the ring. immediately as onita enters the ring you can tell the barbed wire replacing the ropes will be a massive concern, because it takes him forever to get in.

onita and funk stand off in the ring as the announcer yaps... i dont speak japanese but he sounds cool saying whatever he's saying so i trust that it's cool. also, the referee is dressed in a weird ass outfit which i think is just to protect him from the explosion.

bell rings and they pace around, acutely aware of how spooky their surroundings are. they tie up and push each other around for a bit, giving us a few scares with the barbed wire ropes, but neither of them go in just yet. funk breaks the tie up with some stiff strikes which send onita to the ground. after a nice straight, onita goes into the barbed wire and the entire row of barbed wire ropes explode for the first time in the match!!! from here on out, it only gets scarier.

more striking from funk, onita's blood starts flowing for the first time in the match as terry funk hits a nice piledriver. more slow and steady strikes for a tiny bit, before terry funk says fuck you to pacing and onita's back and flings him into the barbed wire, adding more lacerations to onita's back and making the ropes go boom for a second time.

strikes, strikes, strikes... usually with so many basic strikes i'd start to get bored by now but terry funk is one of the best strikes to ever live so i don't mind it much. funk grabs onita's pretty hair and tries to force his head into the barbed wire, but onita manages to stand himself up and hits funk with a BEAUTIFUL backdrop driver. or saito suplex. i can't quite tell. funk tries to pull onita's head into the barbed wire again, but onita isn't having that and throws funk into the barbed wire ropes. funk stumbles around like he's drunk and almost hits the ropes twice which made me laugh.

onita hits a sexy ddt and the camera reveals that funk is bleeding PROFUSELY from his forehead. onita starts headbutting funk, but a headbutt sends both of them into the barbed wire!! onita falls through the barbed wire and out to the floor, funk mostly escaped the blast but is still pretty clearly injured. both men crawl towards each other and funk starts beating on onita.

right here, the alarm starts blaring. only 5 minutes until the ring (and by extension both men) go out in a fiery blaze of glory. they exchange strikes and onita takes funk to the ground for a close 2-count. more striking after the 2-count, and they both fall to the ground. more stiff strikes when they get up, and terry funk goes for a figure four leglock, but gets kicked back into the ropes for another explosion!!

onita hits another ddt on the half-dead terry funk and gets the win... but the timer is still on. terry funk takes off a lace and begins choking atsushi onita as wild thing starts to play and the alarm continues to blare. the bell's ringing furiously, the ref tries to break it up and funk attacks the ref. everyone at ringside is panicking, including the audience who all look either disturbed or amazed. onita hits funk with a ddt, then a powerbomb, then lifts him back up for another powerbomb. one minute left on the timer, and the referee tries to force onita out of the ring, but onita refuses. with 30 seconds left, a stunned onita finally crawls out of the ring, before rushing right back in to attempt to save the unconscious terry funk. when that effort is unsuccessful, onita crawls on top of terry funk, and the ring explodes...

⭐⭐4.5/5 stars⭐⭐

i was so, so, so hard pressed not to cave in and give this match the full 5 stars, but like i said on my first ranking, i really don't want to give any match the highest rating too soon. i plan to review some legendary matches soon, and the 5-star ranking will definitely be reserved for them.

--- match analysis ---

for two veterans like omega and pac, this one was a little disappointing, i won't lie.

kenny went into this match surprisingly the underdog, which is unusual especially considering this is almost immediately after his cleaner run in njpw.

kenny came out hot after a bit of showboating with a close tie-up with pac, both of them showing off their level 800 gyatts grappling skills, before kenny drops pac with a shoulder tackle. pac kips right up and they continue running the ropes, but kenny steps over the back of pac like the sexy, snarky son of a bitch he is.

more grappling, mostly dominated by kenny, until rolls over a hammerlock, takes kenny down and steps on his back too. from here and onwards for a bit, pac mostly dominates the match, slowly picking on kenny omega until kenny hits a kotaro krusher, but pac won't let that shit slide so he just bounces over and out of it like it's nothing.

kenny launches pac to the outside and readies up for rise of the terminator, but because he's a silly little boy he gets caught in the ring and hit with a 'rana. more sprinting around by these pretty boys before pac gets sent to the outside and destroys kenny's ribs with a penalty kick like a mortal kombat execution. fighting on the outside now, kenny sends pac into the guardrail and beats pac's head into a chair. how he didnt get disqualified for this idk, but he didnt, and the match continues. hoorah! pac throws kenny into the guardrail, but pac drops kenny's pretty face on the apron. (oh, so that's why kenny's so white, all of the iron atoms in his face got fucking eviscerated...)

more guardrail bumps... this is getting a little tiring tbh. pretty sexy flying dropkick from pac to omegabut by this point i was already a bit burnt out, and there's still a long time to go in this match. long rest hold sequence here... at this point i'm actually getting a little upset. for two world-class wrestlers like omega and pac who could have had a 6-star banger here, it feels like they were holding back and that upsets me.

kenny hits a nice baseball slide, follows it with a rise of the terminator but hits his head badly on pac's big ass forehead. yowch. kenny hits a GORGEOUS dropkick to the back of the head, followed by a fisherman buster which was perfectly executed. at this point i'm starting to be compelled again, but that slow previous portion still left a bitter taste in my mouth.

you cant escape gets blocked by pac, he goes for a slingshot but gets caught and dropped with YCE which made me smile. kenny's moonsault dodged by pac, pac's moonsault blocked by kenny but pac spins it into a wince-inducing ddt anyway! pac scales to the top rope, kenny rolls out of the ring and pac takes a solid 6 and a half years to change position for a moonsault. pac hits his knees on the guardrails, because god forbid aew wrestlers do anything cool without getting injured.

pac heads to the top again and hits a sexy, sexy 450 splash to kenny, which could have been the end but kenny kicks out! a striking sequence breaks out between them, kenny proves to be the superior striker initially before he gets spaghetti-legged by pac. kenny kicks pac into the corner and powerbombs him into the turnbuckles, follows it with a spinebuster, just for a 2 count! kenny goes for a v-trigger, but pac pulls the referee in. pac utilizes the distraction, goes for a springboard attack, but kenny picks him out of the air with a dropkick, then follows it with a cross-legged patella brainbuster. kenny goes to the well again and hits a lethal v-trigger, searches for the ol' one-winged angel but kenny aint having that shit so he drops him with croyt's wrath anyways. pac kicks out at 2.

kenny goes for a tiger driver '98, but gets dropped on his back. kenny goes for a boot into the corner to pac, but pac slings over the ropes, and over again with a slingshot cutter. pac goes for a german suplex, kenny reverses and runs the ropes, but pac hits a snap german suplex and follows it up with a deadlift bridging german for kenny's troubles, but it's still not enough.

pac takes kenny to the top rope, but kenny trips him, driving him face first into the top rope (i physically recoiled at this), kenny then hits a snap dragon suplex about half as pretty as my bf and follows it up with a gnarly v-trigger. kenny goes for another v-trigger, but gets caught by pac who hits him with a nasty gut kick, side kick, but kenny ducks an enziugiri and goes for ANOTHER v-trigger??? pac stops him with a boot, then a superkick, then kenny finally lands a third v-trigger which was pretty cool. he goes for a running clothesline and hits a fourth v-trigger.

kenny went for a poisonrana, but pac reverses into a poisonrana of his own which kenny rolled through. a few knife-edge chops before kenny hits a knee lift which puts pac to sleep. kenny lifts pac for the one-winged angel, but pac wiggles his arm under kenny's and locks in the brutalizer! after a few seconds, kenny drops to his neck and the referee calls it.

result: pac beats kenny omega by submission

⭐⭐3/5 stars⭐⭐

it was a good match, but absolutely could have been better. for the standards of both men, it was a little disappointing. pac and kenny would go on to have bangers in their trios series w/ lucha bros and young bucks respectively, but omega's phenomenal singles run in aew in comparison to pac's relatively meager singles run makes me question what the point of having kenny lose this match was.

enjoyable watch the first time around, but i watched it twice in total to write this down, and i found myself not paying attention for most of the first viewing.
