Jote: I've seen a cluster of ants move a rock before. Not a big rock, but a decent-sized pebble for ants. Cyril, deadpan: I saw them pick up Nebraska. Joshua: Is that where Nebraska went?!

I think one of the most fascinating aspects of Joshua's character is that he was raised by a cult that worships him and it shows.
The game is very unsubtle in depicting the Undying as a cult, if a benign one whose goals are largely aligned with Clive's: the way it recruits from the disenfranchised dredges of society, the way it isolates it's members from the outside world, and associates devotion to their deity with worth as a person, even glorifying self sacrifice even past the point of reason- something Clive and Cyril butt heads on repeatedly.
And you can see the way that both being raised by them and being their messiah has impacted Joshua: the way Joshua feels that he can and should be able to do everything on his own (rebuffing Jote's efforts to help him even with small matters, avoiding Clive in order to 'protect' him), the way he's feels a right to order the lives of others around his own wishes (his meddling in the politics of each Kingdom, especially Sanbreque), even the subtle hint that he's given up on trying to persuade the Undying not to sacrifice their lives for his gain (and the even more subtle implication that he's maybe accepted that self sacrifice is a good thing, given his own self-sacrificial tendencies for Clive).
Their's this big gap after the reveal Joshua is alive where you wonder: how did he get from where he was Phoenix Gate (the shy innocent boy who wanted to do his duty more to make his brother proud then for it's own sake) to where he is at Drake's Spine (confident, mysterious, cold blooded in his pursuit of his goals), and the game answers that so effectively in the introduction of the Undying. This is where he learned it, this is what shaped him after everything fell apart and he went into hiding: a cult that all at once was trying to parent and worship and aid a 10 year old messiah whose only real desire was to save his brother from the monster that tore them apart.

I always felt tension between Cyril and Clive. These two don't like each other since first sight. I think it's because of Joshua.
Cyril must not like Clive (even if he shows him the respect he owes to a Rosfield) probably because of what Clive did to Joshua 18 years earlier. Even if it was unintentional, he left for dead the one the Undying considers a living god. He must not deem him worthy of being a Shield ; maybe he's jealous. While he had undoubtedly recognized Clive, he still asks who is supposed to protect Joshua in Jote's absence ; as if he was knowingly provoking Clive. Cyril had to take care of Joshua for quite some time during his convalescence and he must take a dim view of him putting himself in danger to save the world ; him doing it alongside the one who almost killed him makes things worse.
Clive didn't like Cyril from the start, beyond the Undying's questionable methods. He doesn't really like it when his little brother gets involved with people he doesn't know himself, a bit like all big brothers. He realizes that he missed a lot of Joshua's life and that he lived and knew things and people without him, and I think that hurts him. Cyril represents the mystery of the 18 years of their separation, and also in a way a part of his brother that he will never be able to know.
These two men are clearly competing to be recognized and valued by Joshua, each for their own reasons.

The Jote crumbs in the inner thoughts feature fed me so well. She has so many opinions on people in the hideaway and it’s nice that we have this more overt evidence of Jote getting to know the people in her “new home”.

can i just say, from the bottom of my heart: i hate the undying. they suck. i know that's the point and their narrative purpose is to reinforce the overall disagreement with clive's independent/self-sacrificing way of doing things but like all that aside wow they rubbed me the COMPLETE wrong direction

List of thoughts I have with FFXVI!! (That no one asked for).
This is me being a hater. Read to you own discretion
Jill’s entire character, arc, story, person, being. Girl they did you SO WRONG.
Also, didn’t homegirl have the curse too. She was a dominant of WAR. are we just gonna ignore her illness
On that note, are bearers with the curse just doomed to sickness and disability post ultima
The most unrealistic part of FFXVI is the fact that they didn’t make some fake ass slur for bearers
Clive showed NO BEARERS CURSE through out the game. Was that intentional. Bitch was snorting aether by like the first third of the game.
I love Joshua. 🥰 I love him so much. He’s probably my second favorite character.
Ya kno, if you make Josh and Clive unrelated, replace Josh with Jill, made Jill play the role as a young dominant that Clive is the shield for, their love story would be more believable (is that too FFX to do?)
I got a very good amount of Clive crying and I reveled in every second of it. He’s so pretty when he cries.
I know cid had the right mind to destroy the crystals, but I wonder if Clive doubted himself for a second for doing it bc if he didn’t, the cycle of violence would just continue.
I really like Clive as a character who needs positive male figures in his life for his lack of one after Phoenix gate. His reliance on cid and Joshua is very endearing.
I love anabella 😌 she’s a wonderful villain.
What happened to the girl with the poultices. Like u can’t just give her closure off screen!!!
The same goes with Terence!!!!
Does Byron inherit the region of Rosaria as the last Rosfield.
How is the DLC gonna cover Clive more? Let me play as Joshua lol.
This game wants to be Devil May cry so baddddd
There are many instances where we could have and should have controlled the other party members
The game was overall was very easy. I died mostly on purpose to try new techniques. It actually got boring at some points
The barnabas fight was the best
Judgement cut isn’t useful for my play style
I don’t understand why Joshua had to capture ultima and hold him. And why does he suck at taking his meds
Every character in this game has no growth except Clive
I still believe that they should have labeled cids group as a cult filled with terrorists. The political impact would insane.
What is the population of storm cuz there were a LOT of akashic soldiers I killed
Ngl I forgot why there were wars going on in storm.
Did cid fuck his way to being the outlaw? how did he gain so much respect and connections??? This is why he should be viewed as a cult leader
There were a few instances where the game could’ve had horror elements. The one sidequest regarding the orphanage is one of them. And Cyril’s quest is another. Shoulda been the RE4 opening lol.
Did cid get ramuh when he was older? He mentioned that ramuh chose “this old sack of bones”
Dion deserved better
‘What happens without the crystals?’ The Industrial Revolution, that’s what.
Bro and how does stealing dominants work. Like do u have to die? What about Jill. The only survivor of shiva. Wtf.
I stand by my unhinged claim. Mid and Clive should have been endgame.
The way that Clive begs both Joshua and cid to not give him their dominant is so heartbreaking. I love it 🥰
What happens to the uh. Order of the Phoenix. The one who follow Joshua. Like what is their purpose now.
How tf did Olivier succumbed to ultima so quickly. And like. Why. lol
