final fantasy XV fave dialogue (1/?)
Prompto: *sigh* I wonder if I'll ever be able to snap the perfect shot.
Noctis: You got the perfect subject right here.
Prompto: I don't see anything.

like i said. if you wanna suffer ill be happy to watch. but also the only thing i know about ff 15 is that one max0r video which while very funny is probably not 100% accurate to the story
now this is giving me too much power. I'll be happy (and sad) to oblige. And give you a quick overview.
and yeah i doubt that one video is a good description of it. so.
cracks fingers.
One of us is going to end up crying by the end of this. it's going to be me. but you're welcome to join me.
Final Fantasy 15 is the story of Noctis Lucis Caelum, crown prince of the kingdom of Lucis.
Tumblr media
The Kingdom of Lucis is facing a crisis as the ever-growing Niflheim Empire is trying to expend and take the kingdom over, at the same time as a sickness called Starscrouge is slowly killing people. When the night falls, daemons come in the dark, and ever since those events have started happening, nights are growing longer in longer.
As the Empire of Niflheim is discussing peace treaty with the Kingdom, a clause is made on their contract to have Noctis marry Princess Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, who's been held captive by Niflheim for about a decade, and who has been Noctis's childhood friend and penpal. She is the Oracle, chosen by a prophecy to be the only person capable of healing the Starscrouge before the sickness takes hold.
Tumblr media
King Regis decides to send his son to his marriage-to-be right before the peace treaty is officially signed, accompanied by his three most trusted friends - Ignis Scientia, who's been working as a royal advisor, cook, caretaker ever since they were children, Gladiolus Amicitia, who's been Noctis' bodyguard and royal trainer for a very long time, and Prompto Argentum, Noctis' school bestie who, despite having no relation to the royal family, is the only person outside of it Noctis managed to get close with.
Tumblr media
But soon after their departure, the peace ceremony goes array- King Regis is murdered and the Kingdom of Lucis fall to the Empire, now leading a manhunt for Noctis to kill the royal lineage, and recover the Ring of Lucis, a powerful artefact carried through the family that, especially once coupled with the Magic Crystal that is the source of all magic in Lucis, can connect its wielder with the Kings of Old to access tremendous power left by the Gods.
See, there is a prophecy in the Lucis lineage that one day the One True King Of Light, chosen by the Gods, will be able to purge the world of the Starscrouge and Daemons, ending this curse at all cost. and, as you can imagine, this burden will fall on Noctis's shoulders as he goes through his new journey to awake the old gods and reunites the soul weapons of the previous Kings in order to unlock the full potential of his power.
The game mostly plays as an open world where you explore the valley with your besties. There is a lot that is very difficult to communicate that is just about how it feels like a camping simulator. You don't want to stay up at night for too long because Daemons are overleveled and bitch to kill, so you try to level up, do your missions, and enjoy your time connecting with your friends, learning more about them.
From Prompto's insecurities about his place in this journey, to Ignis's unwavering loyalty that would oversee Noctis's protection to the end, to Gladio devoting himself to being the shield even when everything starts to fall apart, you end up caring a lot for this group of misfits who are just trying to enjoy their journey knowing it might be their last.
You spend the game mostly having fun with them. Finding place to camp, new recipes for Ignis to cook, Prompto is constantly taking pictures and selfies to remember the journey by, you stop to every ponds to be sure Noctis can enjoy all of the fishing he can, you meet up with Gladio's little sister, it's really a really heartful game in ways that are very difficult to articulate.
... until shit hit the fan.
You're introduced to the real antagonist of the game, the Empire's chancelor, Ardyn Izunia, who's been pulling the strings all along, while also helping Noctis unlock the powers of the Gods.
Tumblr media
And when finally it's time for you to go find Lunafreya for their wedding and hopefully linking the power of the Oracle to the King of Light in order to finally purge it all.....
Ardyn will brutally murder Lunafreya in front of Noctis, killing with her any possibility to stop the Starscrouge and the endless nights around the corner. The death itself is pretty heartbreaking, showcasing Noctis' very difficult time to deal with her loss, and Luna was defined by how she was willing to do everything to carry her duty to the end, so it was really sad.. but Luna was not very well written unfortunately (she appears maybe 15mins in the whole game up until this point) so i don't have as much to say about it :( it was super heartbreaking but yeah... yeah.
During this confrontation, Ignis will lose his eyes trying to protect Noctis, as Noctis was unconscious and Ignis grabbed the Ring of Lucis to ask for the powers of the Gods to protect him, and the Gods burn his eyes off. (it's so hard to properly explain but Ignis becoming blind ends up developping a lot of problems in the plot, of course, but especially in the gameplay. Like you spend the game having Ignis cook all sort of things and exitedly tell you about what he's going to cook today, and then your first campire after this incident you see the only food you can cook is some canned bean and it's just. so sudden in the way to tell you Ignis is changed for ever by it.)
Shortly afterward, Ardyn will create illusions that will push Noctis to push Prompto off from a moving train, resulting in Prompto getting kidnapped and experimented on by the Empire.
all while Gladio is losing his faith in Noctis because everyone is expecting so much from him, that they're their only hope, and yet Noctis is so lost in his grief that he doesn't focus on the bigger picture, while everyone he loves is losing everything around them.
When you finally decide to take down the Empire's HQ to get Prompto's back, is when a lot of truth starts to unravel.
You learn that Prompto is the clone of one of the highest funding members of the Empire, who was created to become one of the mindless drone enemies you fight the whole game, but has been smuggled out of the labs before he could be turned as such - only keeping a mark on his wrist reminding him of who he truly is. As much as Prompto always wanted to be Noctis' friend, he always feared that him being a clone, a failed weapon made by the enemies, would eventually disgust Noctis, and he feared all his life that Noctis would turn against him. so you can imagine the panic for Prompto when Noctis did attack him due to the illusions.
Most importantly though, you learn that Ardyn Izunia is actually Ardyn Lucis Caelum - one of the prince of Olds, the first person who was prophetized to be the King of Light. Bahamut himself, god of gods, gave him for missions to purge the Starscrouge, and Ardyn did just that, and took all of the Starscrouge in the world inside of his body, eradicating it from this world... and when he came to ask what he was supposed to do now, the Gods turned on him and left him to his fate, as he was not the one to actually serve to finish this prophecy. (if i recall correctly they legit say it wouldn't be narratively satisfying. Fuck the Gods, fuck Bahamut, all the homies hate Bahamut no matter the universe.)
Then, as the gods refused to clean him from the scrouge, his brothe, Somnus, tried to kill him before locking him into a magical prison and a magical slumber for the centuries that followed. Somnus became known as the Savior of Lucis, he took the credit for the actions of his brother, and build his kingdom on his ashes, continuing his royal line until Noctis' birth out of it.
When the Niflheim Empire started to come to power, they freed Ardyn, and figured out how to be able to use his power -- Ardyn could unlean the Starscrouge inside of him and have it spread into the world.... and we learn that people who "die" from the Starscrouge actually become Daemons, creature of the night, and the more people become Daemons, the longer the night will last.
And so Ardyn unleashed all of his power, all of his suffering, but himself has been turned into a Daemon at this point due to the sickness ravaging his body for centuries. He only feels pain, and he cannot die, for the sickness made him immortal. So while the Empire woke him up to use him, Ardyn decided instead to use the Empire to take revenge on the descendant of his brother, destroy the world he had sworn to save, and finally by the end, being killed by the True King of Light in the way the Gods will find narratively satisfying.
And finally, as our four companions are trying to escape the forteress, Noctis finds the Crystal, and with all the power he has gathered since then, and prompted by Ardyn telling him that the only way for him to know how to defeat him, Noctis approached it... and was taken in by the Crystal.
In there he met the Kings of Old who told him about the prophecy. The King of Light will pure the world of the Starscrouge and the Demons by taking out Ardyn for good.... but since Ardyn cannot die, his soul will always come back into his body, the King of Light must die as well in order to kill Ardyn's soul in the afterlife once its there.
Noctis therefore learns that by the end of his journey, the only thing that awaits is his own suicide in order to finally put Ardyn to rest.
The Crystal kept Noctis in it for about ten years. For ten years Noctis could do nothing but wait, as the Night fully took the lands over and destroyed everything. Only small camps here and there managed to survive and fight -- and his three friends have been trying to do their best for the people's survival, while being torn apart at the sudden loss of Noctis that day.
When Noctis finally returns, he can meet with his friends one last time. And tell them what awaits him.
youtube
For one last time you team up with your dearest friends, all of them having to be aware that they're walking you out so you can kill yourself to finally bring peace.
youtube
Before entering the final room to the final boss fight, Noctis turns to his friends, and ask Prompto to give him one of the pictures he took. You go through all the pictures you took as Prompto as you decide which picture Noctis will hold on in his last moments, holding on knowing they were the people who brought him on this journey to start with. In there Noctis will share his final words with them.
And finally you leave your friends behind. Finally it's time to fight Ardyn as he himself only awaits for death. Two dead men giving each other a last fight, two pawns by the prophecy made by the Gods, tool in a narrative that never saw them as humans, no matter how hard they clang to their humanity and to the people they loved.
One last final fight, finally killing Ardyn. And watching Noctis climbs on the throne of his father, and empale himself with all of the swords of the previous kings, in order to finish this fight in the afterlife.
And so the game ends. Ardyn is dead. The Starscrouge and Daemons are purged from this world. the Kingdom of Lucis can live on and see better days. And Noctis is dead as well, standing on the throne of his father.
In the last moments of the game you see him in the afterlife where he reunited with Lunafreya. He's holding the picture you picked in the previous scene. Looking over his friends one last time.
Tumblr media
And then in case it's not enough you have the DLCs. Ardyn's DLC tell you more about how the Gods set them up for narrative satisfaction to start with. Then you have all three friends' DLC, set at points in game when you don't know what happened to them. But all of them ends with some final goodbye of some sort.
Gladio's DLC is the most underwhelming one in general so i don't really know what to say about it, and it doesn't really have a big payoff.
Prompto's show how he felt, abandonned in the snow when Noctis almost killed him. Having to wrestle with his existence as a clone, and figuring out if Noctis even wants him by his side. This DLC ends on a last conversation between Prompto and Noctis right before Noctis entered the crystal, in which Noctis tells Prompto he hopes he'll be by his side as he'll try to be a good king. Prompto promise he will be, always.
youtube
And then. Ignis' DLC. god that fucking DLC.
You really see the events in which Ignis stole the Ring to try to protect Noctis there, the event that rendered him blind. You see how much he fights out of devotion for Noctis. And you learn that when he put the ring on, the Kings of Old told him Noctis was going to die. Ignis spent his life protecting Noctis. In fact, you go through various flashback of their first meeting. Ignis has to learn that the kid he's protected his whole life, is going to die, and there's nothing he can do about it, because this is the fate that has been drawn on him.
On the first ending of the DLC, There is one last goodbye. Where Ignis wants to follow Noctis to the end and Noctis has to stop him, telling him that he wants him to live on.
youtube
(so that's the scene where i was crying so hard i ended up tripping in the stairs)
BUT THEN Ignis's DLC has an alternative ending. an ending where when Ignis hears the plans the Gods had planned for Noctis, he tells them, screw you. I'm never going to let it happen to him. I'll fight all of you if i have to and i'll save Noctis from this cruel fate you have planned.
And so in this ending, Ignis doesn't let Noctis walk into the Crystal and they work together, in an alternative way, until they can save him and put him on the throne.
and let me be clear: this ending is impossible by the game's lore. It's purely a fanservice fix-it ending, a what if, Ignis' ultimate proof of love that is enough to screw over the prophecy hundred of years in the making.
Where Ignis manages to save Noctis so Noctis can actually live on as the King he was raised to be. For ever at his side.
SO. WELL. WELL. I NEVER RECOVERED.
(and i am in fact crying as i'm writing all of this)
all of that while the main theme of the game is a Stand By Me cover by Florence + The Machine that will forever rip your heart and will leave you crying your eyes out as you finish this game, especially after the true ending, watching Noctis' die, and then hearing this fucking damn song.
youtube
Anyway i never fucking recovered from it. Like, never.
Like, even a summary doesn't do it justice. My first playthrough took me hundreds of hours. I spent hundred of hours with those kids. Enjoying their banters, seeing them protect each other, fight with one another. There's so much of their dynamic that is so deep into the gameplay, the way your companions will check on you during a fight, the moments they'll pause to have a high five, those moments of pure happiness where you know they're having fun by each other's side.
and Noctis being such a good character you really get to love and for what. And for what!!!!!!!! to get him killed by the end???? like for crying out loud. literally.
So yeah that's the speedrun of what FF15 is about. It's about tearing my heart out of my chest, that's what it is. (and others themes but you get my point)
Anyway. Yeah. Here you are. Here you know FF15's story.
and btw there was a little webseries set right before the event of the games, telling you how each of those friendships started. if you ever goot curious through reading all of this, i definitely recommend it. (the playlist is from newest to oldest though so be sure to watch on the right order)
was it worth it.

The thing I really dislike about IV:A is how chatty all the characters are. We don't need to hear every single Partner's opinion after every event. One of the things that I like about SMT games is character dialogue is sparse and therefore less like noisy chatter. Law Hero infamously saying, "Try not to feel too bad" after that shocking event early on in SMT wouldn't hit as hard if you also heard the comic relief character, the goth loli assassin and the onee-san react as well.
Yeah, that's a recurring issue with modern JRPGs and their large, ensemble casts. When a party exceeds a certain size it becomes harder for each individual member to seem like an active participant in the narrative and not just a mechanical prop, and an easy way to allay that tension is to turn the party function into something like a commentary track. IVA actually does a serviceable job of integrating its cast into the drama, but there's still all these trite reactions that only exist to remind you of whatever stock personality traits are in need of reinforcement (or to subvert the same for comic relief).
It's at least interesting, the way some games in the genre try to navigate that expectation for constant chatter. Like skits in the Tales games, the real-time exploration banter in FFXV/FFVR, party chat in the DQIV-VI remakes etc. There's nothing like that to absorb the runoff in IVA, so everything just spills into story scenes.

LadyKF's Fic Update(s)!
So, been a while since I updated here... I wanted to let you guys know the upcoming plans now that I'm starting to write again.
I am literally right now working on CH 82 of A Second Chance at Family, the FFXV fixit fic where Eos is saved and the dark future averted more or less by the power of love, mostly familial and platonic with a small dash of romantic. It's plot, politics, lore and headcanon heavy, so be prepared for a RIDE if you start reading it.
It also only has a few more chapters left to write before it's done, which means there's a good chance I will have it done by the end of the month. Camp NaNo is next month, however, and even with ASCAF done I will need another fic to work on.
Believe it or not, I'm in the process of rereading Dog Whistle with full intention of figuring out where to go and writing more with the goal of that fic being the next one for me to finish. I've matured as a writer since 2021 and I expect that will show, so get ready. Obviously if I finish it I will start posting again. I will also start posting if I have a good backlog of finished chapters. REGARDLESS! More fic is coming. That's a promise.
For those who don't know, DW is actually from a batch of soulmate prompts from @snaccksels, who gave me a prompt that led to a sharp canon divergence a mere three weeks after the Nibelheim incident. Much politics, much involvement of "minor" characters, lots of sass and banter and a lot of big flashy fights and action.
When I finish DW, be it sooner or later, I intend to watch the Iron Man series and the first Avenger's movie to get Tony's voice down again and Tony & Bruce's dynamics - I may also watch Ragnarok if I need to nail down Bruce's voice. Why?
Because the next fic in line is It's Not A Game. Yes, it's a bit down the road, but I know there's some fans out there looking forward to it so I wanted to let you know.
The Series, specifically the long FFXV one - Stand By Me (Let Us Defy Fate) - will be picked up either when INAG is done or when November brings NaNoWriMo around. Currently on part three, there will be at least another three parts, and two long ones at that.
Obviously, there's other ones too, such as the OT5 MMO AU, Party of Five, the Threads of Fate semi-novelization, Dewprism: Journey to the [Relic], and the FFVII / FFXV crossover To Save the Future once I can focus on it again and @wandererriha and I both have revisited our plot.
Did you hear about one of the fics you were looking forward to? Let me know in comments, an ask, or a reblog how you feel!

What really blows my mind about my second play through of ffxv is just how much I actually forgot about. I don’t recognize certain banters between the main party, I straight up forgot Loqi existed, I even got main plot points mixed up. Which makes since considering I started playing it five and a half years ago when it first came out but it makes me feel like I’m starting it for the first time all over again and it’s been real nice so far

i honestly can't find it, but it was basically a post where i described why the type of "humor" that was added to the Chocobros' banter in the English localization of FFXV isn't funny to someone who's experienced bullying or other forms of mistreatment, and how i personally would not want to hang out with people (even fictional characters) who are mean to me (and to each other)
and that Ignis would never have become my comfort character if i had played the game in English, because holy shit that man would make me hate myself
look at how he treats Prompto
give me kind & considerate JP Ignis any day, thank you

Development hell made noctluna the worst romance of the series. They never interact as adults but only briefly as children and somehow maintained their long distance relationship through a magic notebook for 10 years. There's no sublime tragedy or subtle beauty about it. Noctis had more chemistry in the prototype scene with Stella and a crossover mission with Sarah than he ever did with Luna. They tried to evoke Aerith's death with Luna's death but since she was never a real character it failed.
It really was an arranged marriage and showed, their relationship was underdeveloped which was such a shame. I think they got something like, 10 minutes of screen time together in the entire game?
That being said, I did enjoy FFXV for the boy crew banter, which made up for the lack of a romantic storyline.

Just sliding in because it’s FFXV’s 6th anniversary! God what a ride it’s been! I’ll never forget the excitement of playing it on day one, heavily pregnant, begging my daughter to stay put until I’m done with this game because mummy’s waited a few hundred years for this (((: (insert titanic meme) and she did, god bless she did, very quickly did I rack up over 100 hours 😂
The boys ™️ the meat in the middle of that game that makes it what it is,,,, their quips and their banter and their unlikely band of bonds that by the end of the game, leave marks on each other that is a testament to how they’ve grown. And god am I thankful for Prompto, and on that same breath, Robbie. He brought Prompto to life and I will eternally be thankful for the opportunity to meet him, have pictures with him, and read out something I wrote in his voice this year. And truly, the gratitude goes to @cultivatxr / @gunnhildred — Because of this bean I was able to do something I never thought I was going to.
Prompto was, and still remains to this day, my comfort character. And that extends just beyond wrapping up with snacks and a blanket and putting that disk in. The writing, the safety and happiness I feel when I’m writing as him, or making icons or, getting him a theme or a cardd, but really, prompto wouldn’t be prompto without the inspiration that is everyone here who’s following me today
620!! That’s a big BIG number. And y’all ain’t even from the XV fandom ( a lot yes, but ) and giving me the opportunity to speak about my boy with pride and happiness — to some who haven’t played / aren’t familiar with the franchise is just !! Pure joy to me !! And the opportunity to write with many of you! And explore paths that were never taken, or flesh out some things in greater detail ! Thank you 😭🧡
And then,,, THEN we have the friendships and god have I made some friends for life. Be it through a muse in XV or then through of a friend by extension. Truly I am blessed. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, at times the only place I’ve felt wanted or loved / cherished. And yeah, some people came and went just as quick, and some people have grown distant from me now, but that’s okay !! That’s life ™️ but I’ll always have the memories, and hey if you’re still here, you’re pretty cool too 😉🧡
“—Ever at your side.”
Happy 6 years FFXV 🧡✨

played the Tales of Arise demo
pretty cool, they build on a lot of the really nice things I liked in FFXV like cooking and camping and endless party banter. It's not open-world; in area size and feel it reminds me of Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (and same for really nice menus). Feels very easy to play
however, the anime-ness of the characters doesn't speak to me much. That said, it feels, just like it was for FFXIV, that if the arrangement of my free time were different I could have a really nice time playing it.

Summon Story is like:
The half-dark, half-sunny, monster-riddled countryside of FFXV
The bustling, crime-and-culture-filled cities of FFXII
The "oops I walked into a world-saving quest and I don't really see a way out 'cause I have a conscience" storyline of FFX
The "I did not sign up to be with these people but I guess like I'd kill for them or something" storyline of FFXIII
The gang culture and "it's just profit! (and maybe fun)" antagonist of Crooked Kingdom
The "it's a super bad idea to let loose spirits in the human world" vibes from Beyond: Two Souls
The banter and shenanigans of Uncharted
And my signature blend of found family, hurt/comfort, fluff and angst, Trauma (for somebody. Somebody has trauma), casual intimacy and affection, witty dialogue, metaphors and Emotions™️
Oh and it's kinda structured like a video game too, but you wouldn't know because I haven't written that far yet
Uh, taglist? I never use it, might as well: @enchanted-lightning-aes @woodhousejay @wildswrites @diphthongsfordays @tryingtimi

I’m still talkin about it but the reason i cant get into alot of tv/movies is bc the so called “groups of friends” is always so mean to each other. It’s that shitty brand of snarky, sarcastic banter that Hollywood thinks humans talk like to each other when they do not. This is why ffxv feels so refreshing to me. They talk like people who actually like each other???? Yes they have their share of sarcastic comments towards each other but like it’s not every other word? They actually verbalize how much they care for each other in a natural way. Same for xenoblade 3!!!! Eunie can be really rude (it’s hot) but like??? You can tell she still CARES for the gang. Lanz gets shat on by everyone and at the end of the day you know taion would still die for him like???? It’s not that hard to write a group of ppl who act like humans? Why do so many show runners and screen writers struggle with this.

Is fishing in FF XV that big?
DLKJFDLF in the sense that it matters a whole deal to our protagonist mostly, yeah.
Noctis LOVES fishing. In general his personality is that he's always tired/sleepy, he's socially awkward and a bit moody and quiet, but he loves his friends and he has a very golden heart. But therefore you'll notice that his voice is a bit monotone, his voice is usually kept low like he wouldn't really want to exhaust himself talking and all.
But therefore it means that everytime we run into a place were you can fish, he will LIGHT UP and start to sound extremely excited and vibrating. Like no matter what you're doing he will want to take a break to fish.
Like one of the first time you encounter a fishing place, you're supposed to be moving to take a ship for a political meeting. and Noctis, instead, just starts to vibrate going "LET'S FISH!!!"
there's even a couple of quests in ffxv where Noctis befriends cats and he's like "obviously someone like you deserve the best of fishes". and then his friends are like "or maybe we can buy food at the shop--" and then Noctis is like "no. fresh fish. Let's go fishing!!" and you have to put everything on hold to bring Noctis near the closest fishing pond.
And there is a whole fishing sidequests for Noctis to fish the biggest of fishes, and if you go through it you really can see how happy Noctis is being able to indulge in it. There's even a quest to deepen Noctis' friendship with Gladio that is fully based on Gladio finding a rare spot to fish on because a special fish is there, and Noctis is just vibrating at the fact they could do it, and the fact Gladio thought about bringing him there just makes him enjoy his friends even more. also, Noctis, who likes sleeping more than most things, will be up to dawn if it means he can go fishing.
added to it when Noctis is fishing, his squad will stay in the back watching and commenting, but therefore if you spend literal hours fishing (especially since the game has a day/night mechanisms so if you spend too long on it the night will fall), and it's genuinely so funny knowing that Noctis can stop them on anything they would be doing to fish.
i remember a banter once i was deep in a fishing session where Noctis says "ok, last one!" and Prompto replies "you already said that two hours ago". But still everytime you fish, Prompto will take pictures of Noctis enjoying himself and it's so cute, because everytime you set camp or go at the inn you'll look through all the pictures Prompto took that day and it's so cute.
FFXV is a really tragic story and by the end of it you'll be crying a lot, but therefore it also means that you want Noctis to be happy and have a good time while he still can. Because even if tragedy awaits he says himself that just spending time with his friends was the best thing he could ever get, and he'll never forget the journey, because even if fate worked this way, at least they made the best out of it.
So i feel like most players will do everything to fill Noctis' desire to fish. It's where he's the happiest, so it's where we want him to have the most of fun.
so yeah, fishing is big in ffxv. Not in the sense that the plot require you to fish, but in the sense that Noctis is so happy about fishing you'll want to make him happy anytime.
And so, yeah <3 Noctis' fishing shirt really is perfect for him. because if there's one thing he has strong opinions on, it's fishing.

Writer ask game: 18 and 10~☆
Thanks for the ask!
18) What's the most obscure thing you've researched for a fic?
So I don't actually do that much research for my fics. ^^; Most of my research is looking things up in the ffxv wiki because I never actually finished the game. Otherwise, for the most part, if I don't know something, I just keep things vague. That's why my fics tend not to the kind of rich worldbuilding yours(and Awlwren's and StarJunco's) have. Things I do research aren't that obscure, like symptoms of blood loss or treatment for shock or the size of military units.
10) How do you feel about writing plot, setting/description, inner thoughts, dialogue?
I enjoy writing dialogue the most, which shouldn't be surprising for anyone who's read my fic. Also, internal thoughts/monologue, which is just a type of dialogue as far as I'm concerned. Snappy banter is just fun, and being in the heads of characters is one of the main reasons I write fic. Getting to explore the worldview/perspective of characters, and how that may or may not correspond to what's going on is one of my favorite things. Plot is something I'm getting better at, as my various aus get more and more involved. Setting/description is one of my weakest points, which is why I'm impressed by writers who do that so well(again, you and Awlwren and StarJunco).

Rebirth and Beyond
Some long-form thoughts about VII:Re so far as I'm barreling towards the end.
I'm only on Chapter 12 which is pretty close to the end of this game. More often than not I tend to second guess how I feel about these things as I feel like I'm missing something. Because I'm having fun I tend to doubt my perception of a story or what it is trying to accomplish. However, I've come to find I'm simply more forgiving than most. I prefer to meet a story half-way rather than throw the whole thing out. A narrative not accomplishing what it set out to do does not make it "bad" in that sense to me. Poorly executed but for me, Rebirth is a long way from "bad". The same way FFXV is a long way from bad narratively but that's another conversation. The problem from the outset for Rebirth was, from my view, how do you tell someone the middle of a story? Without a clear three-act structure what exactly do you do? I think Rebirth certainly tries to present itself in a conventional way but it doesn't really work as well as it should. SQX's approach to filling out the run-time of Rebirth is not executed very well simply because we're supposed to be going somewhere and we're not, at least not really. How do you tell the end of the middle of a story? You can't push the stakes too far because we're not at the end. You can't push the emotions too far because we're not at the end yet. Nothing can truly resolve because we're not at the end yet. So while we're getting a lot of time with the characters we're just kind of hanging out. To be honest, there's nothing wrong with just hanging out with the FFVII crew. I love these characters. I wish they had more banter as they run around. Considering what happens next I feel like Aerith should definitely have more things to say.
This can be seen in the way Rebirth opens. We're treated to a rendition of the Nibelhiem incident. Instead of a mystery unfolding before us we're shown what happens from the outset. We don't know how we got to Kalm or when but it can be assumed we walked there. The game is already banking on you having played Intergrade. Is this a problem? Well...maybe. I think it's better to approach Rebirth as a sequel rather than a Remake (no matter what the developers say). It strikes me that this is not necessarily a game made for people who are new to this story. It is but it is not. Mechanically it functions that way. A new person is absolutely going to need their money's worth from a game like this which is where I feel like a lot of the padding comes in, for better or worse. However, for someone familiar with this story things kind of fall apart here as the story is being told in a different way. In an effort to keep your attention every area and character has been turned up to 11 in Rebirth. We're not in the third act yet, remember? The middle of a story isn't usually all that long so we have to find a way to take you on another roller coaster ride. The answer seems to be to turn everything into a mini-game. Some good, some absolutely abysmal. This game does a great job of celebrating its nostalgia but almost to a detrimental degree. You had to hunt down and wrangle a Chocobo in the original right? Well, now you get to do it for every zone in a very poorly crafted stealth mini-game. Costa Del Sol is an amazingly fun time, treated with the same make-over that Wall Market had but underneath are mini-games galore. Not to mention that the highest score is required for every single one of them if you want to platinum the game (which I will NOT be doing). Even exploring the Shinra mansion is turned into a bit of a mini-game as you control Cait Sith to...throw boxes at switches.
The Zack chapters, don't really seem to have any importance so far. I mean they're setting something up obviously but they seem more like commercial breaks. Something to break up the litany of open-world bloat. Now, while the ubisoft towers they put in aren't the most abysmal thing ever it's very clear that SQX is using every modern gaming trick in the book to help you reach that 100 hour runtime. Chadley returns to be the most annoying character they've ever created as he chimes in constantly. They even gave him an assistant to bicker with.
Now the changes they've made to the story are hit or miss depending on who you're talking to. When the game is not slowing you down with messy mini-game mechanics it's going at break neck speeds. I can only reassert that this was bound to happen as we're in the middle of the story. The pacing issues that Rebirth has is anchored around the fact that it has to save all of the good stuff for the end. Of the moments we do get, I think we have to analyze them isolated away from the original. What is the Remake trying to do with Dyne specifically? While in the OG the confrontation between Dyne and Barret is wonderfully done I don't think that makes the changes made in the Remake bad, just different. What we are treated to is wholly different than what we get in the OG but that's the point right? It's supposed to be different. They are re-telling the story. This was never going to be a 1:1 Remake. Does that the new confrontation bad? I don't think it does. It's still heartbreaking. It's still tragic. Just different. As for the boss battle after. Well, I think you can take a few ways. It's comedic and is emotionally tone-deaf. Which is fair. I think you could also (and this may be a stretch) see it as the party also not getting a moments rest so you don't either. Barret just had to put down his friend, someone he could call a brother, and yet here comes Shinra. They catch everyone off guard and now they're in the thick of a fight with the loathsome Palmer. The rail shooter was a little much but we come away from it with a more determined and resolute Barret. Different, not bad. in my opinion.
However, I cannot overstate how much I think the stifling of stakes and emotions are reliant upon them being in the middle of a story. They can only move things along at a certain pace or else this game would hilariously short for its price tag. I think Mr. Lodbrok is a perfect exmple of this. Trying to raise the stakes in a story where we already have a clear motive. We're chasing Sephiroth. We're discovering the Black Materia and The Temple of The Ancients. It's all there but move too fast and Aerith is dead before Cloud has his Costa Del Sol outfit off.
All in all, I'm having fun with Rebirth even if it suffering narratively and is absolutely dragging its story onward with bad mini-games. However, "bad"? Nay, it will not come from my lips.
