Shizuroth, in which author had a intrusive thought and instead of waking up in the Sun and Moon Dew Flower body, Shen Qingqiu Transmigrates again.

Shen Qingqiu hadn't exactly been expecting anything. Dirt, maybe, a forest perhaps - a clearing with a beautiful spring and impeccable Feng Shui preferably, but with Airplane-bro doing the arrangements he hadn't really put much hope into that. Either way, coming out of a plant, he figured there'd at least be soil.

Metal ceiling with bevelled corners and fluorescent lights was definitely not something he'd been thinking about. Hell, he didn't think he'd ever see fluorescent lights again! His new xianxia world didn't even have the concept of electricity, never mind making use of it beyond some lightning-based attacks, and even if he, as an immortal master, lived long enough to see technological progress, why would electrical lights become a thing when night pearls already exist? Never mind glowing talismans and various crystals and gemstones, and honestly, glowing moonlight snail worms in a lantern - and besides, the rules of xianxia basically forbid modern technology, because would it even be xianxia anymore at that point?

And that's completely beyond the point here.

Shen Qingqiu sits up, still staring at the fluorescent light in the ceiling. It's got a slight greenish hue and emits constant low hum of electricity. It looks painfully, incredibly mundane and utterly real.

Maybe it's a dream? He's dreaming of his past life. That has to be it.

Shen Qingqiu looks down and knows none of what he sees. Well, he recognises it - curtains on a frame at each side of his bed, uncomfortable looking chair sitting beside it, a metal bedside table, laptop with sorta janky angular design… Everything looks like it's made of metal, from the walls to the doors to the desk.

It's definitely no room Shen Yuan had ever lived in. It kind of looks like a hospital bed, but in no hospital he's ever been in.

Pushing the flimsy blanket off himself, Shen Qingqiu moves to stand up, only to stop and stare at his bare knees. He's only wearing modern underwear and the fact that his legs are hairless isn't a surprise - Shen Qingqiu's body is perfectly smooth all over, of course, because xianxia - he's used to that. It's their shape that's new.

His knees look muscled. They begin from - thicc - equally muscled thighs and continue onto shapely calves, and - and who has muscled knees? Honestly, they look like something that belongs to Liu Qingge, not him! Liu Qingge would have muscled knees!

Shen Qingqiu wasn't weak, alright, he trained, he practised with his sword, he could handle himself. He was a master of martial arts too, okay! But, uh, he didn't… exactly… look the part. Nor did he want to! That kind of shape took a lot of work to maintain, and with the Without a Cure poison -

Ah!

Shen Qingqiu quickly puts a hand on his - tight, so tight, flat, faintly ripped, definitely muscled, and now that he's looking, is that a noticeable bulge in his very tactical looking boxers, holy shit, okay, not the time - belly and circulates his Qi.

Correction, he tries to circulate his Qi.

It feels like he's trying to stir a pool of fresh cement with a spoon. There's energy there - a great thick mass of energy - but it doesn't flow. It barely even reacts to his crude poking.

This body hasn't ever cultivated - and yet it is practically bursting with power.

Oh, is that how the Sun and Moon Dew Flower body works? That makes sense. Of course, it's new, so it would've never cultivated, it wouldn't have a shaped core. Honestly, he should be grateful that it has any energy at all! He might've come out of his resurrection without any power at all! Having this much energy to mould into a new core is a blessing. And his veins…

His spiritual veins feel a little burnt somehow, but that's not too bad! Probably just a side effect from all this energy roaming freely in his body. Shen Qingqiu's body has damaged spiritual veins too, he's used to working around it. And either way, the Without a Cure is gone! That's already a huge leap forward for him, even if he had to start from scratch.

Running a hand up and down his - washboard abs, holy shit - stomach, and feeling long hair - so familiar he almost didn't notice - falling down his back, Shen Qingqiu looks up and then frowns.

New body doesn't explain the room he's in. It doesn't explain the electrical lights. It doesn't explain -

A hand rips aside the left side curtain with a screech of metal rings on a metal frame, and a doctor steps into view.

It's unmistakably a doctor, with a white lab coat and clipboard, eyeglasses and irritated expression and everything.

"So, you're up," the man says, looking at him down his nose and sniffing. He takes out a pen and turns his attention to the clipboard. "Well then. How do you feel?"

Shen Qingqiu reframes his world with the swiftness of a practised transmigrator and a liar and hangs his head as though it hurts. Hair falls to curtain his face, hopefully hiding his expression. It's surprisingly pale. Hm. "What happened?"

Oh, nice, his voice is almost the same. A little lower, maybe, but familiar enough.

The doctor glances at him. "Confusion," he says and marks it down. "Not a common symptom for you. What else?"

Shen Qingqiu hesitates, unsure, and looks down at himself. He's got muscles on muscles, and his internal energies feel like a concrete truck ready for a pour, but aside from that there's no clues as to what he's supposed to say.

System? He thinks warily.

He gets the mental equivalent of a busy signal. Which is a… really weird sensation, really.

"What else?" the doctor demands impatiently.

Shen Qingqiu, uncertain, asks again, "What happened?"

The doctor narrows his eyes at him and then scoffs. "The assistant misjudged the dosage. I should've never let him handle your injection, but what's done is done. You received three times your maximum, and your body shut down briefly to accommodate."

… What? What is any of that even supposed to mean? Aside from that last point… that sounded far too familiar. "My heart stopped?" Shen Qingqiu asks slowly, pushing his long bangs back from his face.

"Only for a moment - we didn't even need to resuscitate you, your body recovered on its own - a notable new mutation, which has been added to your file, but unlikely to be very useful going forward," the doctor says, looking at the clipboard again. "It's likely only applicable to specific circumstances, and you shouldn't rely on it in the field. Blood loss will kill you eventually, even if your heart can restart itself, so don't count on it even as a last resort."

… Yeah, Shen Qingqiu has no idea what to make of that. "I wasn't planning on it," he says and clears his throat. This place and this guy is starting to give him the creeps now. "I feel fine now. Can I go?"

The doctor tsks at him, marks something down and tucks the clipboard under his arm. "Fine. Your next dose is in two weeks, on the 17th. Don't miss it."

Shen Qingqiu hums, noncommittal, and misses his fan. If these doses killed the new original goods, he's not sure he'd be taking any more, not if he had any choice.

The doctor scoffs, reminding Shen Qingqiu for a moment of himself in a weird way - what the original Shen Qingqiu might've looked like for original Luo Binghe - and turns to leave. "Get out of here then, Sephiroth. Your clothes are in the closet in the back."

"... Thanks," Shen Qingqiu murmurs and then lifts his head, feeling his face go slack in shock. There's a strand of pale - silver! - hair in front of his face and thankfully the doctor is already out of view and can see his reaction, because, what…?

… What did the man just call him?

So, there was a Whole Train of Thought that brought us here.

In all of his time posing as a career counselor, William Afton’s alias has never taken a sick day.

Until now.

He’s not actually ill, of course; he just wants a weekday off, when he knows you’ll be working, when he can enter your residence without being disturbed.

He has had years of practice breaking locks, necessary for activities like cleaning out dead employee’s lockers and hiding victim’s cars, and your front door surrenders just as easily, affording him entrance into the living room. He closes the door behind him and takes his time looking over the earth toned furniture, fingers trailing across the back of the couch. A framed portrait of your graduation ceremony from the academy is tucked behind a plant that’s artificial, of course—you have no time for maintaining a live one—seated on a book about feng shui. You look much the same to him: young, excited and energetic, so eager to help others.

The remote for the television perches on the arm rest of the sofa. There are a stack of fashion and home decorating magazines piled on the ottoman, along with an empty coffee mug waiting to be washed when you return. He finds it all pedestrian and bland. Save for the framed image there is nothing of you, the person, in this place.

He reaches your bedroom, pausing by your dresser, opening each drawer in succession. He lingers over undergarments, touching fabric and imagining your body clothed in it, devoid of it. He sits on the bed and removes his shoes and his glasses, then lies back. You’d neglected to make it in your hurry to get ready that morning and he’s grateful, sinking into the hollow your body had left an hour before. There’s no lingering warmth but he imagines it’s there just the same, radiating from the mattress through the sheets and rising against him. He turns his face and inhales deeply, the scent of your strawberry shampoo heavy here. He envisions you mirroring this posture, stifling moans, hands reaching between your legs to pleasure yourself. He indulges in the fantasy of being on top of you, pressing you down into the bed with each thrust, the soft recoil of motion sending you towards the head of the bed. He wants to fuck all the air from your lungs and maim you, letting his knife carve patterns like his own springlock scars, parting your flesh, sticky hot blood adhering to your bodies.

The hamper in the bathroom holds your dirty clothes and he finds what he’s looking for, wrapping himself in your used panties, stroking his cock. He’d love to make a mess in them but he manages to drop them before he finishes in his own hand. He ensures everything is restored to its exact proper place before he departs, another skill he’s acquired over the years.

He makes a phone call to you later that day from a blocked number, not speaking, merely listening to your voice as you answer, admiring the increased volume of your breathing when your mouth goes closer to the receiver. It’s not nearly enough of what he wants but for now, it will have to do.

“So you’ve spoken to the creep again.”

Mike leans back against his car, folding his arms across his chest. It’s early morning after his shift, and you’ve managed to catch up with him before he’d left. He looks tired as usual, but not as groggy. He’s told you he’s abandoned the sleep aid medication and it seems to be helping him tremendously. He might not have found a cure for the insomnia but at least he’s more alert now for his waking moments.

“Yes, the other night.”

“And?”

“And nothing. He won’t give me a straight answer about how to contact the owner and I can’t find anything on where William Afton disappeared to.” You’ve managed to find the owner’s name, at least, but that’s where the information trail went cold.

The security guard frowns. “He knows something.”

“I agree with you. But a suspiciously clean floor and a sleazy smile isn’t enough to convict anyone. I can’t even get him for not answering me about the contact information because it’s all protected. That was the deal Afton got when his name was cleared. He’s got a shield around him I can’t get through. There are no bodies. There is no evidence. Nothing that we can find, anyway,” you mumble. “I still don’t understand why the owner switched to killing adults. If it even is him doing it. Why kill an employee? Why would Raglan risk his neck covering for him? He’s not the type to do anyone a favor. Not unless he was getting something out of it.”

Mike chews his bottom lip thoughtfully. “Maybe blackmail? Afton has some hold over him?”

“Except Raglan seems too smart to let himself get trapped like that. If anything, he’d be the one taking advantage of someone.” You drum your fingers on the hood of the rusted car. “Why do you think he hired you? I mean why you specifically?”

The young man shrugs. “Because no one else wanted the job, I guess.”

“Except someone did. The previous guard did.”

Mike looks pensive. “I did notice…and it could be nothing, it’s hard to sort through the smug bullshit, but…Raglan’s entire demeanor changed when he read my last name. He literally froze mid sentence and leaned forward to get a better look at me. It’s like he recognized me, somehow. But I swear we’ve never met before that.”

Your fingers still. “Your brother.”

“Garrett? What about him?”

“You said he disappeared. Granted not from the pizzeria, but still. Raglan possibly knew your brother. He could be the one who took him.”

“From a campground all the way in Nebraska?” The guard scoffs in disbelief. “Why? And what about Afton?”

“Maybe he worked for him, with him, or…no. I just can’t picture Raglan being subservient to anyone. He’d be the man in charge. His ego is too fucking big.”

“It just doesn’t add up. I mean, if the guy wanted me dead, wouldn’t he have killed me already? I am really lost.” He shakes his head, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans.

There’s something scratching at the edges of your thoughts, just out of reach. You’re so close to the truth.

“Mike,” you say softly, the pieces of the puzzle finally coming together. “Raglan isn’t covering for Afton. He didn’t work for him, or with him. He is Afton,” you whisper.

Mike offers to take you to lunch that afternoon after a quick nap and you accept, on the condition that he lets you treat him the next time.

It’s surprising how easily you get along. Rock paper scissors decides on a sub shop and your bring your lunch to a picnic table outside, enjoying the warm spring weather.

The certainty that your hunch is correct has you excited. You’re just not sure where to go from here. Knowing is one thing; proving quite another.

“I’ve got about an hour before I have to go pick Abby up from school and drop her off at our Aunt’s house. I really miss Max, she was so good with her,” he sighs, taking a large bite of his layered sandwich.

“Abby?” You frown, stuffing a French fry in your mouth.

“My little sister. She’s eight. I’ve been raising her ever since our mom died and my dad couldn’t handle it.”

You freeze. “Wait a minute. You didn’t tell me you had a sister.”

“I didn’t think it mattered.” He cracks open a plastic bottle of soda and takes a long swallow.

“It’s extremely relevant,” you say, pushing your meal away.

“Why?”

“Because this is exactly what we need to draw Raglan—Afton— out. He won’t be able to resist, especially given your history with him.”

Mike glances at you in disbelief. “You want to use my baby sister as bait for a serial child murderer? Absolutely not.” He takes another drink and sets the bottle down firmly, causing the fluid inside to foam and slosh around.

“She’s not going to be in any real danger. I promise I’ll get her out of there as soon as possible. I just need to lure him there.”

“No. I can’t put her in any danger. I’m already doing a shit job at parenting and I’m not going to expose her to that slime.”

“You’re not doing a shit job. You both have been through hell. There aren’t a lot of people who could manage what you do on a daily basis.” You shake your head. “I don’t know how else to do this, Mike. We need to catch him before anyone else gets hurt.”

“He’ll kill her,” Mike says, his voice threatening to crack with emotion.

“No. I won’t let that happen.”

“He’ll kill her, just like he killed Garrett.”

“You don’t know for certain that he’s—“

“—Yeah, I do.” He cuts you off. “I’ve always known,” he adds quietly. “And it’s my fault. I should have been keeping a better eye on him.”

You rest a hand on his sleeve. “Mike, listen to me. That wasn’t your fault. And I swear to you, I won’t let him get away with this ever again.”

Still refusing to meet your eyes, he fiddles with the cap from the soda bottle, spinning it over the table’s rough surface. “How are you going to stop him?”

You clap your hand down over his, halting his movements and drawing his gaze.

“I’m going to kill him,” you vow.

Abby Schmidt is both exactly like and completely opposite from her older brother.

The physical resemblance is notable, both sharing the same dark chocolate shade of hair and eyes and fair skin. But there the similarities ended.

Ever since the overall clad child had settled into the back seat of her brother’s car, she’d been appraising you, confidently asking a series of probing questions about who you were, how you’d met Mike, and what your intentions were.

You humor her, noting the equal parts fond and exasperated glances in the rear view mirror that her sibling exchanges. He mouths a silent apology to you and you smirk, ducking your head to hide the gesture. In another time, in another place, this might have been just a sweet afternoon between siblings and a new friend. The harsh reality of what you’re really doing wipes the smile from your face and you grow sullen and silent, staring out the window.

Moments later Mike pulls into the parking lot outside of the pizzeria, where your own vehicle is waiting.

“Sit in the car for a minute, ok? We have some grown up stuff to discuss.” He shuts the door, deliberately ignoring the scowl the young girl offers him.

“You’re sure he’s coming, right?”

“I said everything you told me to say. That I couldn’t find a sitter and needed to bring her to work.” He shivers. “I feel really disgusting doing this.”

“I’m sorry. I wish there was another way to get him here. I just don’t know what else to do. If we keep waiting, and he never makes a misstep, and more people die…”

“Please promise me you’re going to get him.”

“I promise,” you say.

He nods, jerking open the rear door and signaling his sister to exit.

“Don’t run ahead okay? Stay with me.”

Mike exchanges one last glance with you and then guides Abby to the entrance, taking her hand as they depart. You enter your car, taking a drink from the water bottle stashed in the cup holder and ease the car out of the parking space, finding a spot partly sheltered from view in the rear of the building by a cluster of overgrown brush.

The trap has been laid. There is nothing left to do now but wait.

The daylight is just fading when you see a familiar sedan easing into a spot near a row of dumpsters. Steve Raglan—or William Afton— emerges slowly, casually shutting the door and jingling the keyring in his hands. You can faintly hear him humming, the melody creeping in through your cracked driver’s side window.

“I’ve got you now, you son of a bitch.” You drain the last of the water from the bottle, shove your keyring in your pocket and push the door open with your foot, immediately reaching for your weapon as you exit. You think briefly the lack of sleep you’ve been getting since you started this investigation must be catching up with you, your movements awkward, reflexes stuttering slightly. You’ve lost sight of Afton and you curse, frantically scanning the darkening area.

“Checkmate.”

You turn around, elbows locking, gun aiming towards your target.

“It’s over, Afton,” you growl, struggling to keep your hands steady. Nerves. It’s just nerves. Adrenaline making you shake.

“William,” he corrects, smirking. “Finally figured it out. Good girl. I knew you had it in you.”

“Whatever. You’re not getting away with it this time.” You blink away a bead of sweat tracking down your forehead.

“I’m sorry, but you’re very mistaken.” He takes a step closer and you tighten your grip on the gun.

“Don’t move.”

“Have you ever shot anyone before, Detective?”

“If you think I have any qualms about unloading this into you—“

“Not at all. I admire your proclivity toward violence. It’s one of your many appealing characteristics. Here, I’ll even make it easier for you,” he says, taking another step forward and closing the distance between you.

Your hands tremble, nearly dropping the weapon. A wave of dizziness and nausea rolls through you.

“Your aim is a bit off. You’re not going to hit anything vital that way. Try aiming here.” His fingers curve around the barrel, gently pulling it so the opening rests against his chest above his heart.

“Something…something is wrong.” Your vision is blurring and there’s a roaring sound in your ears like an oncoming freight train. “What did you…”

Afton lifts the gun from your hands and lays it on the hood of the car, turning back just in time to catch you as your knees give out.

“A little gift I put in your water earlier. It never fails. Something I discovered years ago. Odorless and tasteless and dissolves into a clear substance. Always worked great with the children. I haven’t tried an adult before you, but it seems I got the dosage correct.”

“You bastard,” you curse, struggling to remain conscious. You clutch fistfuls of his shirt, desperate to stay upright.

“You’re mine now,” he says as your body surrenders to oblivion.

You awaken to the worst headache of your life.

Your eyes feel full of sand, each blink torture. Your mouth has an odd cottony feel. The nausea still lingers. You attempt to move and realize you’ve been bound to a table, you wrists at your sides and your legs spread, ankles secured at each corner of the end of the steel slab.

“Awake now, are we? Good. I was getting lonely. Mike is terrible company.”

“What… what did you do to him? And Abby?” Your voice is rough, foreign in your ears.

“Both having a nap, like you just did. Only theirs is going to last much longer. The children will see to that. I want to take my time with you,” he purrs, leaning closer so that his breath is hot against your skin.

“Children?” You blink in confusion.

“Ah. I forget you haven’t met them yet. And likely never will at this rate. Well, suffice it to say you’ve missed out on the best kept secret here at Freddy’s. I suppose there’s no point in hiding the truth any longer. Your precinct really fumbled the ball each and every time. The best way to hide something is to stash it in plain sight. Or, in this case, the animatronics. Adults don’t fit as easily inside the costumes of course but, well…I make it work,” he replies, grinning.

“You sick, twisted fuck. You’re not going to get away with this.”

“You said that earlier; yet, here we are. I’ve been doing this a lot longer than you have, sweetheart. You’re not going to win.” He drags the back of his hand across your cheek, letting his fingers come to rest in the hollow at the base of your throat.

Bending forward, his lips brush yours and you’re too startled to react. One hand knots in your hair as he licks a trail from your neck up to your mouth. His tongue parts that barrier and strokes along yours. You catch his lower lip between your teeth and bite down as hard as you can, drawing blood.

William moves back, looking surprised but not angry. He touches the wounded area and sucks the blood off his fingers.

“Okay. Let’s play.”

You hear the sound of metal dragging across steel and then see him holding a butcher knife in his hand. The blade slices across the first two buttons of your blouse and snakes beneath, the flat of the weapon resting cool against your skin, teasing before it slices a line just beneath your collarbone.

You cry out, pelvis arching up, straining against your bonds.

“Shhhh. I would hold still if I were you,” he soothes, smoothing back your hair with his free hand while the other skims behind the button on your slacks. “Now I know you’ve got some nice lingerie in your collection. The question is, do you save that for special occasions, or do you wear it to work? My guess is a little of both. Sometimes you splurge, treat yourself, enjoy the feel of lace and satin when you’re out meting justice.” He yanks down the zipper and smiles when black lace panties are revealed. “And lucky me, today is one of those days.”

“I needed to do fucking laundry.”

“I like my version better,” he replies placidly, dipping fingers underneath the waistband. “Can’t be that busy if you found time to wax,” he murmurs, snaking lower until he’s reached your mound, then pauses. “I can make this feel like heaven, or I can send you straight to hell. Your choice.”

“Fuck you.”

“As you wish.” He picks up the knife, making another cut this time right below your navel.

You whimper in pain, biting your lip to keep from yelling. You won’t give him that satisfaction.

“No, don’t do that. I want to hear you.” He digs the blade deeper into your belly and you cannot help but obey, crying out. “You don’t know how long I’ve waited for this. Ever since you first came into my office, I knew I had to have you. You just couldn’t help yourself either, could you? Couldn’t stay away. Had to follow me. Had to find an excuse to get me here. I saw right through your little ruse, of course, but…well, I hope you enjoyed that feeling of triumph, however mistaken it was, for as long as it lasted.” His fingers replace the knife, streaking through the blood then sliding across your clit.

You protest, writhing, but it only spurs him on. He thrusts a pair of fingers inside your entrance, his thumb working on the outside. Your body betrays you as it responds to his ministrations, becoming slick. He pauses long enough to take a taste, eyes rolling back in his head and then he renews his efforts, dipping forward so his face hovers above yours. You hate that it feels good, that he seems to know exactly what you like. You’re forgetting the stinging pain of your injuries already, focusing on the pleasure building in a warm knot inside of you. He kisses you again, gently this time, and you can taste his blood mingling with your juices. He coaxes the orgasm from you moments later and you moan into his mouth.

Disgust fills you as the pleasure subsides. Tears prick your eyes and you turn your face away.

“Don’t be like that. I know you enjoyed it.”

You remain silent.

Afton grabs your chin and turns your face towards him but then abruptly releases you, his eyes becoming glassy and unfocused, head cocked as if to better hear something.

“You'll have to forgive me, but it seems I’m going to have to interrupt our little session for the time being. Your friend is waking up.” He sighs, flicking aside strands of your hair with the blade, the flat edge coming to rest on your throat. “I’ll be back,” he promises, then the threatening weight is lifted and Afton walks away, leaving you behind, bound to the table, trapped in the depths of Parts and Service.

Upon entering the pagoda, the couple were immediately taken to the temple elder. His head was shaved to the skin, and he had thick gray eyebrows set over heavily hooded eyes. His wizened face was friendly with laugh lines extending from his mouth and eyes, yet the depth of his gaze and deliberation of action demonstrated wisdom and authority. He was draped in heavy black monastic robes with an additional orange layer slung over one shoulder. His feet were bare and he kept a gnarled but sturdy wooden cane nearby to assist his stride.

When Hinata presented the artifacts hidden in the scroll to him, the light of understanding flickered on his ashen countenance. Flat on his burned cedar desk, she spread out her collection: the clover from the Land of Ire, the golden toad from the Land of Porcelain, a horseshoe from the Western Lands, the elephant figurine from the Land of Indus, the hamsa from the Middle Lands, the gris gris from the Land of the Sun, a bundle of bamboo stalk from the Village of Feng Shui, the dove shaped milagro from the Land of Wind, the ancient coin from Lake Trevoli, and a Leaf from Konoha. Altogether, their journey took nearly three weeks to complete.

With her head bowed and posture bent in deference, she softly voiced her request. “I offer these spiritual totems to you, Great Elder, in exchange for a Nozomu.”

The Elder turned his cloudy vision to the graceful figure before him and gently responded, “My dear child… there are many things I have the power to grant. I can cure disease, bless a life with success and happiness, provide wisdom and clarity... but I cannot bring back a life.”

He stood then, walked around his low desk, and placed a pale wrinkled hand on her shoulder. “I am sorry for your loss. Please take this with you for your troubles. May it bring you the life you deserve and the healing you require.”

Moving his hands over hers, he squeezed them tightly before disappearing down a dark, candlelit corridor.

Hinata opened her cupped hands, staring numbly at the acorn she received. She blinked away the wetness in her eyes as best she could, but it only blurred her vision more. Her lashes clumped together and the tears silently streamed down her pinkened cheeks onto the small brown nut.

Sasuke felt the hot, sharp knife of shared pain slice through his chest cavity, leaving him breathless. He stared helplessly as Hinata’s shoulders began to shake violently. Her fist closed tightly around the consolation prize. She made no noise as she despaired, which he had no doubt came from years of practice. Witnessing her fresh remorse was a harsh reminder of his own departed brother and the torrent of emotions that swiftly devoured him.

Reaching out for her, he softly murmured, “Hinata.”

Without apprehension, she spun around and buried her head into his chest. Clenching his cloak tightly with one hand and soaking it through. Her breathing turned ragged. He rubbed soothing circles on her back before clasping her chin between his thumb and index finger. He tilted her head up and implored, “Talk to me.”

Stifling a wail in her throat, she bit her lips and sniffled loudly. “I-I-I j-just don’t understand. This should have worked. This was supposed to work. It’s all my fault. I must have done something wrong. I did do something wrong. Neji never should have died! It should have been me!”

She was rambling in her desperate spiral. Being a logical man of action, he knew the only way to help her was to understand her thought process. “Hinata, you did nothing wrong. This…” he held out his arm to the relics still laid out on the table, “…never would have worked. Why did you think it would?”

Her eyes narrowed suspiciously and she pushed herself away from his embrace. Reeling from the failure, she became defensive. “What do you mean? I didn’t just make this all up! It’s all written here, in this book.”

From a pouch resting against the small of her back, Hinata recovered said book- the same one he recalled her reading when he kissed her outside the coffee shop.

Taking it from her hand, he read the title- The Terrific and Terrible Tales of Totoro the Timid.

He couldn’t believe it.

For the past three weeks they traveled, battled beasts, committed crimes, suffered impossible odds, and fought through blood, sweat, and tears to get here… all because of a fairytale. Slowly, incredulously, his eyes travelled upwards, seeking out Hinata’s face, her attention, her rationality.

Unprompted, she was now rapidly defending her idea in a garbled argument. “This isn’t the only book that spoke of the power of these objects. I’ve researched for months and there were other sources. Beseeching her to see reason and end this journey of guilt, he spoke as if he were cautioning against some dangerous object to a child. “Hinata. This is a fairytale. It’s not real.”

Throwing her arms down at her sides, tossing the acorn to the ground in the process she yelled, “I KNOW THAT!”

Her eyes began to lose focus and she stared into nothing as she whispered between quivering lips, “I spent so much time… believing this would work. I knew it was a fairytale and that I was taking a chance. But if I only had this chance to bring back Neji, I had to take it.”

Downtrodden and completely exhausted, she resolved to press on in the default way she’d been trained since childhood. Swallowing her emotions, red nosed and puffy eyed, she lengthened her spine, and held her head high with the grace of a true heiress. Emulating her learned behavior of interacting with noble emissaries, and not the man she’d spent nearly a month with, she met his stare and despondently remarked, “Sasuke, please send me home.”

The ache sluiced through his chest a second time. Sasuke bit down hard, flexing his jaw with the movement. Trying to gauge her level of commitment, he supplicated with one word. “Stay.”

“Sasuke… please. Send me home.”

He watched morosely while her eyes flooded again with liquid crystals over pearlescent orbs. Although his heart sank and his breathing faltered, he honored her request and opened the final gate for her to cross. As she began to walk towards fissure, and Konoha on the other side, Sasuke halted her departure. “Wait.”

Her attention flew up to his face, then traversed down the length of his arm, where he was holding out the tome that incited the problem.

“Don’t forget your book.”

Switching her concentration back to her current destination, she solemnly replied, “Do with it as you please. I no longer have any use for it.”

With violet-colored chakra fueling her departure, she made an elegant leap through the rip in space. The hole sealed, and she was gone.

The monk stared back with terror at the raging Uchiha. The monk stammered out, “Who?”

“The witch,” he spat. “Ririka.”

From the entrance of the pagoda in which he was currently standing, a familiar cackle made itself known.

“Uchiha Sasuke, you devil. You came all the way here to visit this unworthy priestess? My, my. Should I be flattered?”

Leisurely turning to face this female nemesis, Sasuke sharpened his sight with spinning tomoes in glowing red orbs. The intimidation factor was a bonus. In a flash, he was standing in front of her, holding the sharp end of Kusanagi to her throat. “Witch. Undo the curse.”

Her eyes grew as large as saucers. Instead of the usual terror, the woman started laughing… again. Ririka laughed so hard she gently, carelessly, pushed away his sword, and began to cough in her other hand.

Out of confusion, Sasuke allowed it. He sheathed his weapon and impatiently waited for her fit to die down.

“Oh, Sasuke. You poor fool. There never was a curse,” she explained with an amused grin.

“What about Naruto?”

“Manifestation.” She waved a hand dismissively.

“The dog?” he continued to press.

“Dog? Pfft. Coincidence.”

“My fan club.”

“Ahhhh!” Her eyes lit up impishly. “Well, that? I may have tipped them off and offered a reward to make you believe in the curse for a while longer.”

She rubbed a stray tear from her eye. Her smile widened at recalling her foolhardy misdeeds.

Unable to help himself, he inquired, “What reward?”

“A life-sized body pillow in your image,” she happily responded.

Now it was his turn to cough.

She added, “I don’t actually have one but I never thought they’d get close anyway. Although some young girl did write to me claiming success. Was that true?”

When he shot her the harshest glare he could muster, her brows lifted towards her hairline and she muttered to herself, “I suppose I’ll need to order a pillow.”

Finally, gathering his wits, he summarized, “So, there never was a curse.”

Ririka scoffed and rolled her eyes. “I’m a holy priestess, not a witch. People are so gullible.”

Sasuke’s oppressive presence filled the room as he stewed in the revelation of his curse. He roared, “What about Hinata?”

She stilled in her movements and tilted her head to the side, her curiosity piqued. “Is she the Hyuga you arrived here with?”

The emptiness that gripped his insides continued to suffocate him at her mention. It was slow torture. Shutting his eyes and breathing deeply, he exhaled, “Yes.”

Placing a slender hand on her chin, Ririka thought aloud, “It seems to me that you should be asking her that question.”

When the Uchiha simply stared and made no move, the priestess snapped her fingers and hollered, “What are you still doing here? Go!”

Sasuke blinked severally when her words sank in. He didn’t want to admit it, but she was right. What was he doing here instead of going after Hinata?

Without a word, his rinnegan activated and the shimmering portal popped open.

“WAIT!” Ririka called out.

Snapping his attention to the slender female, he watched as she darted to the center of the room, picked up something from the floor, and ran back towards him. Once close enough, she placed the item in his palm saying, “For luck.”

It was the acorn that Hinata discarded. Tucking it away, he pulled a note from the same satchel and peered at the smiling priestess. “For you.”

Ririka accepted the paper. By the time she finished blinking, he was gone.

Unfolding the letter, she read, “Golden Toad: Peach Grove Monastery, Land of Porcelain; Golden Dove Necklace: Carlos d’Oro, Land of Wind… WHAT IS ALL THIS?”

She quickly scanned the inventory list from beginning to end, her anxiety building with each item. Reaching the bottom, in neat writing it stated:

Ririka,

I’ve taken the liberty of notifying the owners in these lands that you needed to borrow their sacred objects for Temple duties and would return them in a fortnight. Please do hurry as the Temple and our Country’s honor is at stake. I’d hate for anything to happen to you should you fail.

S. Uchiha

Her nostrils flared as she read the contents over and again. Surrounding birds scattered at hearing her screech at the top of her lungs. “DAMN YOU, SASUKE UCHIHAAAAAAA!!!”

A/N: Nozomu in Japanese means “wish.” In this fic, I am using the term to signify an religious submission for a ceremonial request, but it is entirely made up for the plot. Also, I would like to take a moment to defend Hinata’s sanity and IQ in this story. Yes, she may have taken the words of a fairytale a bit too seriously, but even the smartest people can fall victim to their emotions and desperation. After all, there’s a direct correlation between the love you feel for a person and the foolish things you’re willing to do for them.

I love how many of you guessed the locations correctly! Some were more ambiguous on purpose. I wanted some real-world countries to translate to a larger area in the Narutoverse. Because of that, it was difficult for people to guess where the Land of Wind is located in our world. It represents the regions in South America and the Iberian Peninsula where Milagros are prevalent.

I’m sorry for the two heavy chapters in this fluff crack fic. Like I said, this was only supposed to be one chapter and it got away from me. I hope you still enjoyed them. Happy ending coming next. Thank you for following and reading!

Last night I started reading a really addictive and wonderful BL supernatural/mystery novel called "Feng Shui Masters Are Internet Celebrities" (Chinese: 风水大师是网红) by Drunk or Not (Zui You He Fang, Chinese: 醉又何妨). It's so good that I couldn't stop reading and didn't sleep at all.

It's set in a modern world where the supernatural exists but only a few know about it. Those who are aware of the supernatural include warlocks (which are like the legendary cultivators except they're proficient in spells and feng shui), demons, monsters, ghosts and more.

The MC and ML are both warlocks. The MC is something of a popular internet celebrity who has a Weibo (popular social media website/app in China) account dedicated to the metaphysical, and is also a graduate student studying Chinese.

In the beginning, the MC is astranged from his family and friends because a powerful half-demon and his human accomplices poisoned him with a Gu (if you're unfamiliar with what that is, see Wikipedia) that can force him to kill everyone close to him. This kind of Gu poison also controls him so that he's unable to tell anyone he's been poisoned. When he was attacked, his mother tried to save him but was killed. In his last life, he died before he could reunite with his loved ones and couldn't find justice for the death of his mom.

After he is reborn, he gains a mysterious prophetic ability. If someone is in danger of being killed by a supernatural being, and he is is capable of saving them, a cryptic Weibo post in eerie red font will appear and @ his feng shui master/metaphysical expert account. The warning messages are time stamped at the time of death of the individual but appear on his Weibo feed before the time of death. After he saves the person, Weibo credits him with points that can be exchanged with things he needs the most, like a cure for his Gu poison.

The ML is your typical cold and unapproachable guy who is only gentle to the MC. He's the director of a special department in the police force in charge of investigating supernatural crimes. When he first appears in the novel, he finds evidence of a spell that the MC used to save someone from being crushed to death by a falling statue. From his reaction to this, it's immediately evident that he misses the MC very much. When the MC is cured of the Gu poison, the reunion scene between the two is really touching. After that, the MC begins to help solve supernatural crimes with the ML. When the MC's identity as the feng shui master internet celebrity is exposed, the two are often photographed together and netizens create a CP (ship) for them. One day, the ML sees some embarrassing CP fanfiction about him and the MC, and he realizes he's in love with him.

I'm currently at the awkward point in the novel where the ML has a burning unrequited love for the MC. It's a little painful to read. I'm pretty sure this novel has a happy ending, but it's still hard to read about the ML's deep longing for a romantic relationship with the MC.
