Early Cloche, 1910s

Another hat from the late 1910s. This was intended as part of the Great War hat set, part 1, but I had some issues with it that I wasn’t able to resolve until now. It’s an early form of the cloche hat, with a partially turned up brim and a flat crown. I took a lot of inspiration from Folkwear’s Metropolitan Hat pattern.

This hat was worn in the mid to late 1910s and into the very early 1920s. By the late twenties it would probably have started to look a bit dowdy. It’s a transitional hat between the large hats worn in the Edwardian era to the form-fitting cloches of the 1920s. Most examples like this I have seen are in home sewing magazines and sewing patterns, not advertisements for hats, which suggests hats like these were made more commonly at home than by professional milliners.

(This also has a resemblance to the bucket hats of the 1990s, so you might get additional use out of this in your decades challenge if you so desire.)
