In Jacksonville, these lawyers are adept at understanding local laws, and court procedures, and building robust defense strategies tailored to each case.
Why You Need a Criminal Defense Lawyer in Jacksonville, FL

These professionals bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you receive fair treatment under the law.
The Benefits of Hiring a Criminal Defense Lawyer

How Criminal Defense Lawyers in Jacksonville Build Strong Cases

Criminal defense lawyers work closely with qualified experts, such as forensic scientists or medical professionals, to provide expert opinions that support the client's innocence or raise doubts about the prosecution's case.
Preparation for Trial
If the case proceeds to trial, criminal defense lawyers in Jacksonville meticulously prepare for courtroom proceedings. This may involve conducting mock trials, preparing witnesses for testimony, and developing persuasive courtroom presentations to effectively advocate for their client's innocence.
The Importance of Communication and Client Support

Tyler Bryce Simmons aka "Slugga Tee" aka "Perfect Aim" aka "Problem Child"', Florida inmate V90693, born 2001, incarceration intake February 2022 at age 21, scheduled for release March 2027
Felon in possession of a Weapon
In January 2022, Florida State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced that Tyler Simmons was found guilty by a jury of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The Honorable Kevin Blazs sentenced Simmons to seven years in Florida State Prison during a Jan. 21, 2022, sentencing hearing.
Simmons has been prominent in the local Rap Music scene for several years.
On April 9, 2020, members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office gang investigations unit conducted a traffic stop for speeding on a car leaving an Eastside residence belonging to Simmons. All four occupants in the car were detained — two were ultimately arrested for illegally possessing firearms. Two of those defendants provided consent to search their cellphones and, when law enforcement did, law enforcement found numerous videos of Simmons brandishing a rifle without the stock. Further investigation revealed the videos were taken at Simmons’ home a month prior. A firearms expert reviewed the videos and was able to determine the rifle was a genuine firearm. Simmons, a documented gang member who was previously convicted of a felony, was not legally allowed to possess a firearm and was subsequently arrested.

Jacksonville sheriff says body camera video shows officers were justified in beating suspect
A Florida sheriff released body camera video Monday that he says shows his officers were justified when they repeatedly punched, elbowed and kneed a drug suspect who appeared to resist arrest even after being zapped with a stun gun and pinned to the ground.
youtube
The suspect’s attorney, meanwhile, is calling for a federal investigation of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and accused Sheriff T.K. Waters of a coverup. Friday’s arrest of Le’Keian Woods drew national attention after the release of a passerby’s cellphone video showing officers beating him and appearing to slam him face first onto the ground after he was handcuffed.
youtube
Waters and Mike Shell, his assistant chief for public accountability, told a news conference that the officers knew Woods had once been accused of murder, was on probation for armed robbery and had been connected to firearms and drug trafficking when they gave chase to him Friday after a traffic stop.
Mug shots taken after Woods’ arrest shows him with both eyes swollen shut and bruises and cuts on his face.
“There was force used by arresting officers and yes, that force is ugly. But the reality is that all force, all violence is ugly,” Waters said. “But just because force is ugly does not mean it is unlawful or contrary to (agency) policy.” He said all the officers remain on the street “where they belong.”
Woods is charged with resisting arrest with violence, armed trafficking in cocaine and methamphetamine and other felonies.
Harry Daniels, Woods’ attorney, said he will petition the U.S. Justice Department to investigate his client’s beating.
“It’s unfortunate that the sheriff believes the beating of an unarmed man is justified,” Daniels said. “It is obvious that he is complicit and an enabler of clear misconduct by his officers. It is not surprising that (the sheriff’s office) didn’t find any misconduct because they investigate themselves.”
Body camera footage shows that Jacksonville officers, including Hunter Sullivan, stopped a Dodge Ram pickup in an apartment complex’s parking garage. Shell said the stop came shortly after Woods completed a drug sale at a gas station. Officers are then seen pointing their guns at two men with Woods and they surrender without incident. Waters said cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine and a handgun were found in the truck.
The video shows Woods, however, bolting from the front passenger’s seat and into the apartment complex, with Sullivan giving chase. Sullivan repeatedly yells at Woods to get on the ground or he will shoot him with his Taser stun gun. When Sullivan gets close enough, he shoots him twice with the stun gun and Woods falls face first onto the pavement.
Sullivan then jumps on top of Woods and repeatedly tells him to put his hands behind his back. Woods, who is 5-foot-8-inches tall and 160 pounds (1.7 meters and 72 kilograms), squirms and sometimes puts one hand or the other behind his back, but then moves the other beneath him.
In an arrest report also released Monday, Sullivan said he repeatedly hit Woods in the head and ribs and elbowed him in the face, fearing that he was reaching for a gun in his waistband. Detective Josue Garriga arrived and said in the report that he kneed Woods in the head and shoulders while another punched him. After about two minutes, they get Woods handcuffed, according to the video.
Another body cam video shows officers still accusing Woods of resisting arrest as they try to lift him from the ground, so they slam him back. They then drag him into a sitting position on the ground.
Daniels, Woods’ attorney, said that the sheriff’s office had no legal reason to stop the truck. In the report, the officers said they originally tried to stop the truck because the driver wasn’t wearing his seat belt, but he wouldn’t pull over.
“They had no reason to engage Mr. Woods, none,” Daniels said. He said Woods wasn’t resisting arrest as he struggled with Sullivan and the other officers, but was trying to protect himself from an unlawful beating.
“Any man who is getting a beating is going to resist that beating or he is going to get killed,” Daniels said.
Woods was being held Monday at the Jacksonville jail. He has been on probation after pleading no contest to a 2017 robbery in Tallahassee in which he and his roommate tried to rob a marijuana dealer at gunpoint, according to court records.
The dealer pulled his own gun and fatally shot the roommate as Woods fled. Woods was originally charged with second-degree murder in his roommate’s death, but a plea bargain was reached last year that released him without prison time.
In 2019, Garriga shot a man in a traffic stop over an unbuckled seat belt, according to public records. Prosecutors found the shooting was justified, and a lawsuit filed by the dead man’s family was later settled for an undisclosed amount, federal court records show. Daniels was the family’s attorney.

Jared Bridegan’s ex-wife is set to appear in court in Washington on Friday afternoon, one day after she was arrested in the murder-for-hire plot to kill Bridegan in February 2022.
State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced Thursday that Shanna Gardner, who also goes by Gardner-Fernandez, is facing charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, and child abuse.
Gardner’s indictment shows that she had been conspiring to commit Bridegan’s murder as far back as May 2015.
She was arrested by ATF agents in West Richland, Washington. Online jail records showed that she was being held by the Benton County Corrections Department in Washington. Per Washington state records, Gardner’s mugshot will not be released.
Gardner is set to appear in court at 1:15 p.m. Pacific time on Friday, which is 4:15 p.m. Eastern time. She will be extradited to Duval County, Nelson said.
Nelson said her office will file a notice of intent to seek the death penalty against Gardner.
The crime
Bridegan was gunned down Feb. 16, 2022, in Jacksonville Beach after taking his twins he shared with Gardner, and his then-2-year-old Bexley, his daughter with second wife Kirsten Bridegan, to dinner.
The software engineer had just dropped off the twins at Gardner’s house when he encountered a tire on Sanctuary Boulevard, a one-way road. He was headed home to Kirsten Bridegan, with whom he shared children Bexley and London.
Jacksonville Beach Police Chief Gene Paul Smith said during the announcement of the first arrest in January, that “the tire was purposely placed there to make him stop which he did.”
“Tragically he began to exit his vehicle to move the tire and he was gunned down in cold blood,” Smith said at that time.
Bridegan was shot several times while Bexley was still strapped into a car seat in the back seat of his car.
The other arrests
Before Thursday’s announcement, two other people were arrested in the murder-for-hire plot to kill Bridegan, a St. Johns County father of 4.
Mario Fernandez Saldana was arrested in March on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, child abuse, and solicitation to commit a capital felony. Fernandez Saldana is the current husband of Gardner.
Henry Tenon, 61, was arrested in January in connection to Bridegan’s murder. He was arrested in January on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, accessory after the fact to a capital felony, child abuse, and second-degree murder
Tenon, who rented a home from Fernandez Saldana, agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder. That means Tenon faces 15 years to life in prison, but not the death penalty.
Nelson said Thursday that Tenon did not act alone in Bridegan’s murder and Fernandez Saldana did not plan it alone. She said Thursday’s briefing would be her last public update on the case.
“Shanna Gardner’s indictment acknowledges her central and key role in the cold, calculated, and premeditated murder of Jared Bridegan,” Nelson said Thursday.
Gardner’s parents Shelli and Sterling Gardner released the following statement:
“Words cannot accurately express the depth of our sadness. Family is our top priority. We love our daughter and are focused on supporting her and our entire family as we help our grandchildren navigate this difficult and very confusing time. For their sake and all involved, we caution against further speculation and request privacy as the legal process runs its course. In the meantime, we are thankful for the continued support, thoughtfulness and prayers being so generously shared by friends and loved ones.”

The Jacksonville sheriff’s office says the officers involved in the violent arrest of a drug suspect won’t face disciplinary action after video of the incident sparked outrage.
“Based on the current available information, the agency believes the detectives acted appropriately with respect to the law and JSO policy,” Sheriff TK Waters said of the arrest during a Monday evening news conference.
Suspect Le’Keian Woods was out of jail on felony probation from a robbery charge and had been pulled over on suspicion of drug activity when the arrest happened, Waters said.
In bodycam video released by police, Woods can be seen fleeing police after being pulled over until an officer eventually tases him, causing him to fall on his face on a roadway.
According to a police report obtained by CNN, “Woods then began to violently resist.. attempts to take him into custody.” Woods continued not obeying commands, the report said, and was “concealing his right hand near his waistline.” Then, an officer “delivered three elbows to the right side of the suspect’s eye area,” according to the report.
Waters says the officers involved in the incident are currently on active duty.
A six-and-a-half minute witness-shot video of the encounter released by Woods attorney, Harry Daniels, on Saturday led to outrage over the arrest.
CNN reviewed the video, which shows multiple law enforcement officers in both regular police uniform and in plain clothing wearing police vests, holding Woods down, while at least one officer slams Woods to the ground.
After Woods is rolled over and sat up in the video, his face is visibly swollen and distorted with both eyes bruised and bulging. Woods’ mugshot shows his eyes swollen shut, with a cut on his chin and a busted bottom lip.
“Just look at Le’Keian’s face,” Daniels said in a video news release. “He looks like he just went 12 rounds with a professional boxer. He’s lucky to be alive.”
According to the arrest report, Woods was in possession of a semi-automatic handgun, cocaine and other substances when he was pulled over after undercover officers observed him allegedly selling drugs at a gas station. He is being charged with resisting officers with violence and a number of drug charges, the report says.
His attorney told CNN the gun in question belonged to another passenger in the car and was registered to that person. Daniels called the drug charges his client is facing “trumped up.”
Daniels said he will hold a news conference with Woods’ family in Jacksonville on Tuesday when he will respond to the latest information from the Jacksonville sheriff’s office.

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – The 61-year-old man arrested in connection with the targeted ambush shooting of a father of four in Jacksonville Beach last year appeared before a judge Thursday morning on charges of murder, conspiracy, accessory and felony child abuse.
Henry Tenon has been in police custody since August on unrelated charges after he was arrested during a traffic stop on Edgewood Avenue North.
On Wednesday, Tenon was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree murder with a weapon, accessory after the fact to a capital felony and felony child abuse — all directly related to the murder of Jared Bridegan, according to Jacksonville Beach Police Department Chief Gene Paul Smith.
During his first appearance, bond was set on the other charges, but Tenon was ordered to be held without bond on the murder charge. He was also appointed a public defender.
He will be arraigned on the charges on Feb. 16 -- a year to the day that Bridegan was gunned down on a dark stretch of road near the Sanctuary neighborhood with his toddler daughter in the back seat of his sport utility vehicle.
Bridegan, 33, had just left the home of his ex-wife, Shanna Gardner-Fernandez, the night of the ambush. He dropped off the twins he shared with her, and then the attack occurred just miles away as he headed to his home in St. Johns County.
According to detectives, the Microsoft manager was shot at close range several times after he stopped to move a tire out of the road. That tire, investigators believe, was part of the setup.
“He was gunned down in cold blood. Nothing was stolen from him. His 2-year-old daughter remained strapped in the car seat in the back. This was a planned and targeted ambush and murder,” Smith said during a Wednesday news conference. “The ruthless homicide has pained our community.”
State Attorney Melissa Nelson explained that the child abuse charge against Tenon stems from the fact Bridegan’s 2½-year-old daughter was “directly in harm’s way when her father was shot and killed in front of her.” The child was not injured.
She also said the conspiracy charge against Tenon is significant.
“We know Henry Tenon did not act alone,” she said.

Onslow County District Attorney Ernie Lee has announced that Derick Brandon Stokes, (34), was found guilty of three counts of disclosure of private images, three counts of disseminating obscenity, and three counts of having attained the status of an habitual Felon. The jury retired and took less than half an hour to find Stokes guilty, who was waiting on the main floor of the courtroom for the announcement. Stokes was last seen running across Court Street in a black shirt with purple writing on the back and jeans. He remains at large as the United States Marshal's Service is currently searching for him. Defense Attorney Lee Britt of Jacksonville represented Stokes, who was out on bond at the time of the trial, and Onslow Assistant DA Kaelyn Sweet, who is the main prosecutor for sex offenses and child abuse cases in the county, represented the State. During the trial, there was evidence shown that on 8th June 2018, the victim reported to Onslow County Sherriff Detective Lindsay Kensington that pictures and videos of her performing sexual acts had been sent to her employer at a Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune through Facebook. The pictures and videos had been created between her and Stokes during their previous relationship and the victim expected them to remain private, plus evidence shows that between June 2018 and November 2020, Stokes created more than 11 fictitious profiles in order to post the content to social media. Each post he made contained the full name of the victim, and many of the posts also mentioned her home address and her employer information. ADA Sweet also provided additional evidence showing Stokes slashed the victim's tires on two separate occasions and broke into her home to take pictures of a gun in her bedroom, which he then posted on social media too. Stokes confirmed telling his ex-girlfriend he would keep posting the private content until he felt satisfied that she was just as embarrassed as he was after she ended their relationship, prior to law enforcement becoming involved in the matter. The State presented the evidence of those conversations, as well as photographs and social media records in addition to the testimony offered during trial, including that of the brave victim. The defendant offered evidence from an Onslow County Civil District Court Clerk and his oldest brother, Robert Stokes. The court recorded the verdict of each charge even though Stokes was not present during the reading. Once Stokes has been found, the judge has ordered he will be held under no bond pending sentencing. In North Carolina, a defendant must be present for the sentencing, and due to Stokes' status as a Habitual Felon and his prior criminal record, he will be sentenced to a term of Imprisonment in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction at the discretion of the court. Stokes has previously been convicted in Onslow County of simple assault and shoplifting on 28th March 2005; Misdemeanour breaking and entering on 27th July 2005; Felony breaking and entering and breaking and entering a paper currency machine on 10th October 2005; Felony breaking and entering and larceny on 25th April 2012; larceny by servant or employee, speeding to elude arrest; breaking and entering vehicles and financial fraud by a Felon on 20th August 2013; And larceny over $1,000 on 4th June, according to the North Carolina of Public Safety. CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – After an investigation that went on for over a year, charges were filed against Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels on Thursday and he surrendered to authorities. Court records obtained by News4Jax show Daniels, 55, faces four charges including evidence tampering, a third-degree felony, and three misdemeanor counts of false reports to law enforcement authorities. Daniels’ attorney Matt Kachergus said his client does not plan on resigning his position and still plans to seek reelection. Daniels has been under scrutiny from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for more than a year after he was accused of ordering one of his deputies to illegally arrest his former mistress for stalking in 2019. She began a relationship with Daniels when she worked for him when they were both at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the affair continued after he was elected sheriff. https://www.instagram.com/p/CD9Zc7qjj-a/?igshid=12982aj6b6hjk
