Betty Grof rant essay 6 months late!! i'm still heartbroken here's 1000 words about it!
I still have so many Thoughts and Feelings about Betty's character that I made a whole separate sideblog more or less just to share them so if YOU are also afflicted with this brainrot then welcome
So after 2 rewatches of fionna and cake and having Simon and Betty infect my brain like a pair if ill-fated amoebas for the past six months I have a random burst of energy and. want to share why I feel so disappointed in the conclusion Betty's character arc.
I feel like most of the positive reviews of the casper & nova + cheers call them "bittersweet", but I honestly can't see anything sweet about the ending. Simon's obvious immense guilt/trauma/depression aside, they're really just going to leave Betty like that? She no longer has a corporeal form and is perma-fused with a malevolent cosmic deity forever. There's no bittersweet maybe-in-the-next-life or deadworld ending for Betty. There's no "I can't be with the love of my life but I get therapy and friends and ride into the sunset". She's just... gone, at least if we take the narrative at face value. We obviously don't really know exactly what being Golbetty is like for Betty, the only hint being choosegoose describing it as "languishing", which isn't positive. I've seen a few people retort that "maybe Betty likes being an all powerful chaos deity" which, maybe? But nothing Betty ever did implied that she would enjoy that or want that type of power. Her only wish was to cure Simon and be with him again.
I also can't be convinced that Betty would've chosen to fuse with Golb if she'd been of sound mind. Beyond the MMS-ness, it's difficult to imagine the depth of her guilt/horror realizing what she'd done to Simon by jumping through the time portal, essentially condemning him to 1000 years of thinking she'd abandoned him and died in a nuclear apocalypse at best, and at worst leaving Simon with the belief he somehow harmed/killed her without knowing it. For. A thousand years.
As if that's not enough guilt, the first thing Simon does after their reunion in AT is beg her to let him die instead of becoming Ice King again. And she refuses, because this is Betty we're talking about, and she just won't give up. She promises Simon she'll figure out a way to cure him without realizing that it will be nearly impossible and then drives herself mad trying. Just.. the immense guilt that Magic Betty must've felt knowing she stole Simon's one chance to escape the curse and pass on peacefully, and now he's trapped in his own mind waiting for her to free him and she just can't figure out how.
On top of that, you have Magic Betty summoning Golb as a last ditch effort which ENDS THE WORLD. Having Betty revert back to her sane(ish) self alongside Simon inside Golb and fully confront the consequences of Betty's actions was... narratively great but also cruel. Betty clearly understood she just triggered the apocalypse- "this world will end unless Golb is banished" and "I'm sorry for messing everything up" and absolutely feels like it's her responsibility to fix that. And I think the most heartbreaking part of that entire scene is Simon just... giving up. He's not upset with her for not letting him die or abandoning him or ending the world he just. Holds her and tries to comfort her That must've been... really something for Betty.
I know Simon/Ice King is touted as the big tragic character in Adventure Time, and while yeah, fair take, I really can't get over the immense tragedy that is Betty Grof's story. She's never allowed to be happy. We don't learn much about her background, but most of her character traits to me at least point to an unhappy childhood (extreme impulsivity, disregard for her own well-being, obsessive tendencies, self sacrificing). She falls deeply in love and accidentally loses her sense of self and purpose in it. Then her fiance, the love of her life, loses his mind and starts attacking her. Then she impulsively jumps 1000 years into the future because she sees him and she loves him so much and she can't stop herself, but he's gone in an instant and now and the world is completely unrecognizable and she has no one. Simon has been warped into a demented lunatic, and she knows he's still her there and it's her fault. Then she goes absolutely bonkers-crazy trying to fix everything and starts betraying people left and right, then nearly destroys the timeline (including herself!), then it culminates in her ending the world. (sidenote: I fucking love how powerful Magic Betty is. like she's a random human who maybe learns magic for a year or two and figures out how to both destroy an entire timeline and summon the most powerful being in existence? ?? fuck I love Betty.) Then she condemns herself to an infinity of suffering in order to keep Simon safe. Like fuck.
I love a good Christ figure/big sacrifice, but I don't find Betty's arc bittersweet or satisfying at all. She didn't want nor deserve her fate, she was forced into it and ultimately destroyed herself out of guilt and grief. It's just... bleak. Every small mistake Betty makes is punished beyond reason. She's burned up and torn up and twisted and it's ultimately because she loves someone too much and wants to save him. She's robbed of the chance for any real character growth or happiness.
Ultimately, I think the show did try to give her and Simon closure, but it went about it in such a bizarre, unconvincing way. They both felt so out of character in Casper & Nova and Cheers that it just seemed flat and unfulfilling. Any character development Betty underwent as Golbetty happened off screen, which is maybe why she seems so... not Betty, especially in Cheers. And I mean, "I have no regrets" my ass, after everything she (unintentionally) put Simon and herself through, that line feels almost cruel. Not to go all "he wouldn't say that" but... she wouldn't say that. On top of that, her final message to Simon seems to be "don't you dare sacrifice your mind and humanity for the sake of someone else" WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT SHE DID? Also see paragraph 2: she's still fused with a malevolent chaos deity isolated in the cold vacuum of space.
I sort of understand not wanting to give Betty and Simon a happy ending together, although I still think done correctly it could've been a satisfying and good ending, even if Fionna and Cake seems to retconn a lot about their relationship that paints it rather unfavorably. More than anything, though, I wish they'd shown Betty an ounce of mercy. She's a phenomenal character, she's funny and smart and impulsive and stubborn and so good. Her character had so much potential for growth and fulfillment and happiness and she just ended up being a plot device for Simon's arc and I will Not forgive that. The ultimate message of her story is that suffering begets suffering and mistakes will be punished to the fullest possible extent. I know to some that feels "realistic" but this is adventure time and that's a harrowing fucking message to end on.

A friend recommended Deadworld Isekai to me the other day. To damn it with faint praise: it was good enough that I finished reading all three volumes, and the author has a solid grasp of spelling and grammar.
It has the usual LitRPG problem of re-reifying abstractions to produce weird round-trip-translation nonsense that has become the heart of the LitRPG genre, one of the most finely polished turds in the world.
The thing that stood out to me as the most 'fixable' problem, though, was the fake suspense and the fake threat. Oh no, the protagonist is in over his head, however will he survive? Oh no, the protagonist is on the verge of death, what asspull deus ex machina is going to save him now?
The cast is too small and the premise too specialized for there to be a serious threat of replacing Matt as protagonist, and once you've introduced CRPG Healing you can't threaten injury short of death, so I roll my eyes at every new danger, confident he'll be perfectly fine (and powered up!) a chapter later.
I want to contrast this with Lord of the Rings, which looms over the wider fantasy genre so much that it gets taken for granted, and I sometimes see people thinking of it in terms of the popular cliches that were copied the most. But I feel it's pretty good about threatening Frodo, and that's less copied.
At some point in The Return of the King, the reader has seen Gandalf die and Boromir die and the Fellowship broken, and then parts of the Fellowship met new cool people, and then those cool people started dying too, with Theoden bravely dead on the battlefield and Denethor horribly dead in attempted murder-suicide.
It starts to look like Frodo might die, IMO, it's genuinely plausible that Tolkien will kill off another major character at this point. The deaths are mounting, Frodo's psyche is fraying, and the savvy reader sees Sam is right there to take over if Frodo dies. The main protagonist will probably still survive because that's how stories go, but it's not all that obvious.
Tumblr media
It looks like death when Frodo is stung by giant spider and carried off by orcs, but it's much less of a deus ex machina to hear that the spider was using paralytic venom to save a meal for later. Frodo isn't getting a sudden powerup or new ally, it's just a spider being a spider.
With no magic healing, several magic items lost, and Frodo increasingly traumatized, the quest gets closer to Mount Doom. Here Frodo puts on the Ring, which is not how these stories normally go! No heroic last-minute surge of willpower. Frodo is sick and tired, looks at the Ring of Power, and decides that in fact, he would like Power for himself.
Gollum bites Frodo's finger off, falls into the lava, and the Ring is destroyed nonetheless. Tolkien again makes it look like Frodo might really die in the resulting volcanic eruption, now that his importance to the story is over and the Ring is destroyed and the rest looks like cleanup from the army marching on Mordor in the other plot thread.
But the book isn't over yet. If you're reading Lord of the Rings in print, you can feel there's another hundred pages left to go at this point. Frodo is saved, Aragorn is crowned, our heroes are victorious, there's celebrations and marriages and vacations and songs.
Then Frodo heads home at long, long last and finds Saruman got there first and started polluting the Shire.
The last surprise is that Saruman dies really fast. The rest of the book is appendices. What, you expected a hundred pages of Frodo fighting the Shire Wizard War? Nope, we're done here! Also Frodo has to leave, Sam takes over at the very last. It's a good series of plot twists, without being a plot swerve.

Valorian Goisha, "my stolas" (he is nothing like the Og Stolas) He is the Prince of Pride, son of Lavoriss the Kng/ Overlord of Pride. He has heavy expectation to be perfect. He is shy, a bit prudenent, but seeks true love most of all. He is engaged to an Angelon named Karissa. (Her story is also imprtant and tied to our Main Team, (Garisson Barlowe). Valorian, named after the word Valor, is expected to be everything expected of a Goisha, just as his father was by Catholiss. Heres a hint to how the Goisha play into the main plot, this story isnt about "eating the rich." This story is about the rich actually using their powers for good. Instead of the Goisha being "Rich" in matterials, they are rich on raw power, they have the power to change the Deadworld for the better, but due to Catholiss's bigotry, it never changes. It starts with Valorian, after he meets Finnias Fargo. Before Finnas, Valorian has still felt like he longed for more, like his life wasnt truelly fulfilled. He feels like less of a person and more of just all mighty force of nature, just a piece of the puzzle of Catholiss's perfect world order, just a being to fear and to be ostracised by humanity.
When he meets Finnias, he eventually gets to see the true damage his family has caused the Beings of the Deadworld. He falls in love with Finnias because he admires his good heart, and his comedic personality. The two get closer because (so far) when Valorian and his cousins (Asmodeus, Ryhaka, and Percilla) end up fighting amongst each other, he leaves the Palace of Arcadia with Asmodeus. He asks Finnias if he can stay with him, and Finnas having major feelings for this interesting godly being, of course says yes. (My fiance and i have a running joke that Finnias runs back upstairs to his flat and just starts hucking garbage out the window like a mad man because he doesnt really stay at his place often.) More on Finnias soon, but his story is pretty fucking sad. Long story short, he was a full of himself gangster who got in way over his head with a crime syndicate, and his two friends (in the gang) and sister (not involved whatsoever, but is trying to help her brother see the light) end up getting killed because if it. Finnias has history repeating itself woth the Main Team when they come up against Laveren and his Syndicate.
But Anyway, Whooo, so much to talk about, so little post, lol, Heres Valorian

tell me abt ur ocs RIGHT NOW /nm
i'm in the process of rewriting a bunch of stuff bc i made up most of it when i was a 13 yr old edgelord but…
The multiverse -
hhhhokay 👏
So everything oc or au related falls under one giant omniverse in which exists clusters of multiverses. I like to think of them like galaxies
In the center is the primal world - the first/original world in that multiverse. For any of my aus, that would be the media they're based off (ie professor layton, ace attorney, etc.) Those primal worlds are inaccessible, but the ones in Destiny-Alduran are
Each universe is like a star; it can burn bright on its own or be part of a solar system. In that case, realms (worlds within worlds, in a way, like a demon realm or something) are like planets
Sometimes, you have subworlds (sorta like planets separate from a solar system) or deadworlds (dead stars separate from a solar system). subworlds are usually man-made, and they have only been found in Destiny-Alduran, whereas deadworlds are former aus that I no longer work on and are found outside multiverses
Destiny is the largest multiverse, being the collection of worlds where my main ocs exist. Alduran is the second largest, being a group of worlds I made to play around with a different magic system. They do have some characters, but they're still underdeveloped. Destiny and Alduran are so interconnected (being my only two oc multiverses) that they can be considered their own cluster
outside of everything is the void and the dream realm. The dream realm is accessible to anyone but is mainly utilized by a Shadow Beast ghost named Shadowweaver. The void, however... only a certain individual has been able to enter... a certain individual by the name of

The theory of the True Reality holds more water now than it ever has! Thanks to ████'s research, we are now aware that Shadow Beasts are able to escape the dream realm and access the void without much consequence to their physical health. We finally convinced ████ to try to go beyond the infinite nothingness, but they have yet to succeed in escaping its confines.
Contacting her has proven unsuccessful. Our Empress is rather busy observing some newly discovered multiverse, trying to understand how in the five realms Destiny's magic seeped into one of its universes. Apparently, this happened to another world too, turning it into a world of demibirds. The Empress says demibirds and harpies are extinct in Destiny, which, as someone native to Alduran, surprises me. Additionally, their primal worlds are locked, unable to be accessed. ████ wonders if accessing them is the key to accessing True Reality, though part of me doubts the Empress will be willing to test that.
--------------------------------------------
The magic system(s) -
holy cannoli there's a lot to talk about here
Destiny (and by extension the Demibird and Harpy AUs) - ya got basic magic, elemental magic, artificial magic, and celestial magic
Alduran - only one type of magic and it comes from sin creatures
I'll talk briefly about Alduran first bc there's less to discuss
TL;DR, the only realm in Alduran is Aldur (very clever, I know /s), which is basically Hell. Aldur demons have magic that they can give to human hosts whom they possess for reasons I haven't come up with yet. Aldur magic is a lot like typical spellcasty wizard magic, except it's a dead giveaway of demonic possession, so even the concept of magic has been regarded as evil for millennia
Now...
I think I overdeveloped Destiny's magic system a bit bc it kinda turned into this
Tumblr media
but...
To start, basic magic, sometimes referred to as "human's magic": there's Light magic, Dark magic, and Dual magic. Light magic is generally seen as a more defensive magic, with protection spells being easier to use. Conversely, Dark magic is seen as an offensive magic, with attacking spells being very easy to use. Light magic doesn't react to its environment as well as Dark, which can be good (does exactly what its user commands no matter what) and bad (depends of user's instruction and cannot act on its own). Dark magic reacts well to outside forces, which, too, can be good (adapts well, can act on its own) and bad (harder to control, can act on its own). Dual magic is an extremely rare combination of both which neutralizes a lot of the advantages/disadvantages one has over the other
Basic magic is most commonly used by humans, demigods, and Shadow Beasts, with demigods mainly using Light out of tradition, Shadow Beasts only being able to use Dark because they are made of the stuff (although hybrids can use Dual), and humans/demons being able to use whatever
What basic magic you get depends on what your parents have and their strengths. For example, if you have a weaker Light mage father and a stronger Dark mage mother, you'll get Dark magic. If they both have the same type of magic, or if one has magic but not the other, you'll get that magic. On rare occasions, the magic's strength will be equal, or one parent has Dual and the other is magicless, or both will have Dual magic, in which case you'll have Dual magic. The other two types of basic magic will dominate Dual, so if you have, say, a Dark mage father and a Dual mage mother, you'll get Dark magic.
Elemental is unusable by humans on its own, but magical creatures (with the exception of demigods and Shadow Beasts) can use it. In fact, they are made of elemental magic. There are four kinds - water, earth, fire, air - and different magical creatures have different amounts of each. For example, dragons have mostly air and some fire, whereas demons have mostly fire and some air.
Artificial magic is just magic put in something like a scepter or amulet and used by people, generally those without natural magic. No matter what is put in the source, be it Dark, Light, Dual, or elemental, artificial magic will act the same. This is because it is just the spellcasting angle of magic usage (think runes and incantations), and the magic lacks the ability to react to its user or environment. It is generally weaker than natural magic because of this
Celestial magic is like if you turned basic magic into deities
At first, there was only one, known today as Alpha Prime, believed to have resembled Dual magic. It is widely believed that it was the first thing to exist in the multiverse, and that it created Destiny Prime and, subsequently, its AUs. The story goes that it got lonely and split itself in half to create Alpha and Omega (so clever past me... /s). Alpha resembles Light and Omega Dark. Alpha went to work creating the basic magic system so humans can survive in the wild (bc idk i guess she liked the funny little apes or something and didnt want dragons to eat them) and Omega made a bunch more magical creatures like phoenixes (his personal favorites), gryphons, and demons
Anywho, because humans are stupid, they ended up fucking shit up and Alpha decided their magic should be weakened because they keep fucking shit up, but she failed to properly communicate that to Omega, so he thought she wanted them to take magic away from humans. So yeah, he did that, got about halfway done before getting severely overpowered, Alpha panicked, and because separation spells were, like, the only thing she knew worked at the time, she cast one on him. There were supposed to be only two products of this spell, Light-magic-resembling Sunfire and Dual-magic-resembling Reaper, but plOT TWIST THERE WAS A THIRD NAMED SOLAR ECLIPSE WHO RESEMBLED DARK MAGIC BC 13 YR OLD ME WAS EDGY AS FUCK
Alpha viewed Eclipse as nothing more than a mistake and was pretty shitty towards them. Eventually, Eclipse got sick of it (rightfully so), so Alpha yeeted them into space. dw they found their way back without Alpha's knowledge >:)
Eventually the celestial magics all found users for prophecy reasons
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
Hellfire's a thing
It's like the Destiny equivalent of Aldur magic and yes it is used by sin creatures HOWEVER harpies used to have it too and no one knows why
Demons (not the evil kind) can obtain Hellfire if they are shit enough as a person or unlucky (Hellfire chooses its users via soulreading but sometimes it goofs) because those creatures have the ability to turn into angels or sinmara (the bad kind of demon, word comes from their language) after they die
Harpies just have it
One neat little quirk of Hellfire's is that it can cause its users to undergo monstrous transformations. In sinmara, this results in titan and hellbeast forms, and in harpies, it results in a harpy beast form. I won't go too in depth because the details of each form is dependent on the person and also because I'm still working on harpy beasts
--------------------------------------------
Dee-Dee -
My main oc :) I made her in 6th grade, and by "made the character" i mean "stole a character from BeyBlade Burst, misspelled his name, forgot he had Vegita hair, gave him magic, forgot he was originally from BeyBlade so now he's in his own world with magic and demons and stuff, made him bisexual, made him a transwoman, and redesigned/renamed her all between the ages of 12 and 14"
Her backstory is the one I have to fix the most bc, again, I was a dumbass edgelord in my early teens, but it basically goes
Born to a magicless demon mother and human Dark mage father (except plot twist his magic was celestial but we'll get to that)
Magic was overpowered as shit because something something celestial magic
Fucked up a spell real bad and her magic just shut down in response
Was given an amulet to help her hide the fact that she's a demon (her mom does this too)
Was nearly attacked by a Shadow Beast when she was 14, which reawakened her magic
Magic is still overpowered as shit
Fucked up a spell so bad it gave her MBES (my reworking of what i thought DID was (i was SO wrong, it's almost embarrassing) where basically it's a magic born version of the whole "split personality" concept where those who have it are systems of (usually) 2-3 alters. Basically it's DID, but instead of it being trauma based, it's caused by the user's magic being so unstable it permanently messed up their brain chemistry)
Anyway her alters' names are Midnight and Aura (they used to be Eclipse and Nightmare respectively. hopefully it's clear why i'm rewriting them)
She starts learning how to control it and learns that it's actually celestial magic and that she's part of some great prophecy
She meets a Shadow Beast named Nightshade sometime in high school and they fall in love (she doesn't know Nightshade is a Shadow beast at first btw bc they're shapeshifters)
Dee-Dee and Nightshade reveal to each other that they are not human (well, both of them are half human, but that doesn't matter ever so...)
Dee-Dee finds out she's a bisexual polyamorous transwoman
She starts dating her bestie Ash because she realizes she's in love with Ash (ranlay moment). Nightshade is totally fine with this and is actually really close friends with Ash, so they are now a happy throuple :)
Callie's a bitch i guess, idk i still have to rewrite her
Oh, also, she has a little brother named Raymond
sorry the details are kinda vague at the moment
--------------------------------------------
Nightshade -
she never had a super fleshed out backstory unfortunately
She was actually my first acespec character. She's demisexual
Her real name is Belladonna she just thought Nightshade sounded cooler when she was in middle school and it kinda just stuck
She's a straight woman with a wife lol
Her personality is like if Athena Cykes had an emo phase in high school and then was the mom friend in college
She has made jokes about keeping Dee-Dee on a leash before bc that woman is feral
She was also the first Dual mage character I had
She HATED Callie with a burning passion (she still doesn't like her, but she tolerates her now)
She's probably the only neurotypical one
She's also the only member of the Prophecy that doesn't have celestial magic, but her powers are so strong it's on par with Sunfire and Reaper
She can and will fight god (Callie)

i wish there was a bit more creativity with the Fall of Deadworld covers tbh, so far it’s just been sots of the big four or Judge Death mugging the page, and none of these characters have much to do with the story anyway.
Let me see Fairfax and Jess or Sister Psiren on a prog cover.

Big J, what's your take on Megatropolis? Hard mode: no mention of the first-panel bobcut-tease.
On one hand, it’s fucking gorgeous. It’s sublime. It’s beautiful. The atmosphere is rich, the designs are retro-futurist splendor, everything is just absolutely fantastic. Love it. And that last page in particular was great. Dave Taylor put on his fucking drawing pants for this one and it SHOWS.
On the other, I feel like it’s falling into the Elseworlds trap of “haha I wonder how this character will be in this universe!” thing that kinda takes me out of it a bit. And it starts right from the very first page. I think Deadworld does a better job by mixing in remixed character with all-new ones, while this one is more bog-standard in execution. But it’s not that big of a deal really.
Honestly, if it hadn’t been for Lawless the musical, it prolly would’ve been my favorite part of the Megazine.

FALL OF DEADWORLD UPDATE
Well, about two minutes ago I finished scripting the final page of the final episode of the latest series of DARK JUDGES: FALL OF DEADWORLD.
*Phew* This series has been quite a crazy ride -- for the story and the characters, and for artist Dave Kendall and myself who have both suffered / weathered some unpleasant health issues this year. But we're both back on track -- yay!
Think this might be my favourite series so far to write. (Though I really loved a couple episodes of the 'Visions of Deadworld' series we did a couple years back) Horror, violence, death, existential dread and some really nice / sweet / fun character beats in among the carnage. We say final goodbyes to some characters and completely up-end the status quo - again.
And that's... one helluva series cliffhanger.

@elemental-ocean-chaos has been nagging my ear off to do a book review, so here goes.
It is set within the Judge Dredd universe, on a parallel Earth where a homicidal nut job, Judge Sydney De’Ath, decides that since all crimes are only committed by the living, why not cut out the middle man and declare all life to be a crime.
This is the second part of the story detailing the fall of all life on his twisted  version of Earth, nicknamed ‘Deadworld’ on Judge Dredd’s world.

I have noticed two things about the letters page in 5000BC lately.
Firstly, there is nearly always a letter that digs at Fall of Deadworld, today’s was fairly polite, but for the most part they’re viciously written. But i only ever see digs at deadworld no other strips.
Secondly, people who read this thing seem to be happy to read any old shit and still proclaim it brilliant.
I decided we need Scojo back.
This kiss-ass game is weak
