I just love how carefree mulder and scully are in david’s episodes, it’s a side of them we so rarely got to see… 😔😔😔
yeah, me too. david writes journeys for mulder, with clear morals and arcs. the unnatural is about valuing “life on this planet,” finding space for joy and connection in the midst of blinding pursuit. amor fati is about commitment to your purpose, realigning to who you are at the core, who you were as a child. the promises that you made to yourself then. hollywood a.d. is about legacy, what we leave behind: does it matter if it’s warped, or if it’s nothing, so long as we loved and were loved well?
david’s episodes are classic hero’s journeys, active lessons for mulder as a character. but these are all things that scully already knows, so she gets to be passive and lighthearted and wise. they aren’t having anything beaten into them; they’re growing through storytelling, through play, through identification. they’re growing through watching a movie at 3am and rambling to each other. they’re growing through eating gross fake ice cream and reading old newspapers on a saturday morning. they’re growing through swinging a baseball bat, hips before hands, all night under the stars.

Cake with Intergalactic Bob
TAGGING ➝ Lilly Onakuramara
LOCATION ➝ New York
TIME FRAME ➝ In the distant future.
WARNIINGS ➝ None.
NOTES ➝ Lilly celebrates her birthday with Intergalactic Bob.
Lilly materialises as the fabric of time stretches and bounces back into form. It’s New York, but not as we know it. The streets are far cleaner and much clearer with the lack of cars. But that’s probably due to the flying vehicles that don the sky. There’s no litter on these streets and much less pollution. The buildings all seem quite different too. With some outlandish but designs using materials not discovered yet.
Lilly takes a look around before checking her watch. Yes, this is the right date. Then pulls out her cellphone. It’s a pair of sunglasses and with the receivers, in the headpiece, she’s able to Instruct it to call Bob with her mind.
After a few rings, Bob picks up and speaks in his hearty voice. “Ah Yeobo, it’s lovely to hear from you. I’m glad to see that you took my offer of a birthday celebration. I’m surprised you picked this year but I have a few things up my sleeve.”
Lilly chuckles in response. “Well, you made me an offer I couldn’t refuse Bob.”
“You're in for a treat Yeobo,” Bob tells her. “Meet me at the east docks furthest warehouse in 30 minutes and may the celebrations commence.”
With that, the call ends. Lilly takes a moment to flick her phone to visual mode, clicking the trigger on the right side of the glasses they become tinted like sunglasses. Then she digs into her jacket pocket to pull out a flat rectangle. It’s black on one side with a pattern on the other. Holding her thumb over the security sensor she tosses the rectangle into the air as it shifts and grows into a board hovering a little above the ground. Wasting no time Lilly hops and begins to hoverboard down the busy streets.
Arriving at their agreed location Lilly finds it oddly quiet. She walks into the warehouse building suspiciously staying alert. She tries the light switch but it doesn’t appear to be working. As she makes her way further into the main warehouse she sees what looks like a birthday cake standing on a small table in the centre of the room lit up by a single spotlight with candles lit. It’s two tiers with intricate white icing and rainbow sprinkles. It looks delicious. She edges closer to the sight. Taking another cautious look around trying to get a bearing on her surroundings in the dark. The area seems strangely clear of any other furniture that she can see.
Just as her foot crosses into the ring of light provided by the spotlight Lilly’s ears pick up a very subtle click. With her catlike reactions, she flings herself back as far as she can towards the door, as the cake explodes in front of her. With nowhere for cover, she curls into a tight ball on the floor as bits of cake rain from the sky covering her side. Once it’s all over and everything seems quiet again Lilly pulls herself off the ground as the lights come on illuminating the space. She finds herself covered in bits of cake, frosting and rainbow sprinkles. The previously empty white room now covered in cake. Assessing the damage she can see the imprint of where her body was curled on the floor. The only blank spot shaped by cake and icing. Her side is covered. She slides a finger up her covered arm until a good dollop of cake and icing is collected and pops it into her mouth. Humming as the sweet flavour hits her tongue. It’s a classic Victoria sponge with royal icing. Her train of thought is derailed by a deep bombing laugh.
Turning around to the doorway there floats Intergalactic Bob. He’s red and the size of a basketball. His shape is similar to that of a paint splat and there’s a visible aura emanating out of him. Only his black eyes are visible but his entire form shakes with the frequency of his laugh. “You should have seen your face!”
Lilly rolls her eyes before breaking out into a smile. “I should have known. You and your practice jokes.”
“Always.” He chuckles “come here Yeobo, it’s been too long.” Bobs form surrounds Lilly in an embracing hug before pulling back and resting on her shoulders. “You're looking well since the last time I saw you. Which age are we celebrating today?”
“Today I am celebrating this as my 25th year,” Lilly tells him.
“Nice, half a century. And will Ester be joining us too?” He inquired
“You know she’s always with me. Even in spirit.” Lilly replies before gesturing to her side and then the room. “Exploding cake? Really?”
“Well, I know how much you love explosives and anything connected to fire. Plus it’s your birthday so you gotta have cake.” Bob explains with a smile. “This place is perfect.”
“You know me too well Bob,” Lilly tells him, getting excited herself at the numerous possibilities of exploding cake. “Let’s get started.”
They spent the rest of the afternoon in that warehouse exploding cake. Where Bob got it all from was a bit of a mystery but in this timeframe, it is pretty easy to materialise things quickly. Cakes of all shapes, sizes and flavours were tossed, splatted, and torn apart by the pair as they tried different variations of explosives. Testing explosion strength against cake density. With only protective goggles on Lilly like Bob enjoyed being in the thick of the action and ended up coated in an array of cake flavours from carrot cake to triple chocolate. One of the most exciting moments was when Bob gifted Lilly with a unique lighter. It was small and cylinder, the size of a regular lighter but with a nozzle to direct the flame. However, she could twist the base to increase the size of the flame and turn it into a small flamethrower. This proved to be very effective in lighting the candles from a distance and with a bit of practice, she got very good at not burning the top of the cake. By the end of it all, they lost count of the number of cakes they had destroyed.
Bob heads to a small panel on the wall near the door and pushes a few buttons and soon enough the room previously covered in cake is now spotless. Lilly finds herself clean of all cake too. Bob then presents one last cake and places it at the centre table. “Now this last cake is not for destruction this is to eat,” Bob tells her pulling out a plain white cake. “I’m pretty sure you haven’t tried the Any Cake before. It takes the tastes of a persons favourite cake flavour. I got the ice cream cake version just for you.”
Lilly beams in excitement. She’s herd her colleagues at the Bureau talk about these cakes but never tried it. Bob uses his deep bass voice to give her a rendition of Happy Birthday. “Happy birthday Lilly, and Esther of course,” Bob tells her and before Lilly can blow out the candles she’s stopped. “Ah ah ah. Make a wish before blowing out the candles. It’s an earthling tradition.” Bob tells her. She rolls her eyes at his love of earth culture. Then closes her eyes to make a wish before blowing out the candles.
Bob hands her a plated slice. The cake and icing are oddly completely white. She takes a big chunk of it with her spoon. “What flavour do you get Bob?”
“My favourite is always jelly and custard.” He tells her.
It’s not the strangest combination she’s ever heard but she’s not sure that’s even an ice cream flavour. With that, she pops the cake into her mouth in excitement. Her eyes pop as she recognises the distanced flavour of mint chocolate chip. Her favourite ice cream enhanced with chocolate cake. All Lilly can do is hum in acknowledgement of how amazing the cake tastes. She wonders to herself what favours the Bellas would get.
She goes in for another slice before Bob pats her on the back. “Pace yourself Yeobo, there’s plenty here. You can take the rest back with you. Maybe get your Bellas sisters to give it a try.”
Once they are full of cake the remainder is packed into a storage box which when the lid is applied can be condensed down to the size of a credit card which Lilly places in her pocket.
“Thank you. Bob this has truly been amazing.” Lilly says as she shares one last hug with Bob. They never know when or what time they will next meet. “Will I see you again soon?”
“Don’t you worry Yeobo, time always has a way of bringing us back together. Just make sure you're looking after yourself.” Bob tells her as they part ways. As Lilly slips back through the fabric of time with Bob’s waves being the last sight she sees before arriving back in 2021.
