Conwy Castle (Welsh: Castell Conwy) is a medieval fortification in Conwy, on the north coast of Wales. It was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around £15,000, a huge sum for the period. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294–95, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr in 1401. Caernarfon Castle is the main attraction, but the town itself has lots of charm and as much history. Its narrow streets welcome visitors to explore the beautiful corners and little shops... The Edward I’s royal castle and fortress was the center of a medieval walled town. Caernarfon also has remnants of Romans – 1000 years earlier they constructed their fort of Segontium on the hill above (its foundations still exist). —————————————— #caernarfoncastle #caernarfon #wales #visitwales #explore_wales #amazingplaces #bestofwales #amazingplacestovisit #photography #travelphotography #walestourism #wales❤️ #walesonline #europetravel #europetrip #ischuttsphotography (at Caernarfon) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwrUJ2nFKoW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=l8ljk7j9nbwe

Caernarfon Castle. “Most castles are happy with round towers, not Caernarfon! Polygonal towers were the order of the day, with the Eagle Tower being the most impressive of these. You will also note the colour-coded stones carefully arranged in bands. The site of this great castle wasn’t chosen by accident. It had previously been the location of a Norman motte and bailey castle and before that a Roman fort stood nearby. The lure of water and easy access to the sea made the banks of the River Seiont an ideal spot for Edward’s monster in masonry. Edward wasn’t one to miss an opportunity to tighten his grip even further on the native population. The birth of his son, the first English Prince of Wales, in the castle in 1284, was a perfect device to stamp his supremacy. In 1969, the investiture of the current Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Charles took place here.” https://cadw.gov.wales/daysout/caernarfon-castle/?skip=1&lang=en —————————————————- #traveling_uk #historicplaces #caernarfoncastle #caernarfon #beautifulwales #castles #visitwales #wales #ischuttsphotography #landmarks #beatifularchitecture #bestofwales #explore_wales #amazingplaces #amazingplacestovisit (at Castillo de Caernarfon) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bwmrk_el9dw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=caxex09q4gwk
