Election results 2019: BJP takes early lead, holds on to Hindi heartland
Tumblr media
India began counting hundreds of millions of votes in its general election on Thursday, with a coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party taking an early lead, TV channels and the Election Commission said.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is expected to surpass the 272 seats needed to command a majority in the Lok Sabha, six of seven exit polls showed on Sunday.
The NDA led in 235 seats, with the opposition United Progressive Alliance ahead in 95, at 9 a.m. local time (0330 GMT), about an hour after the counting of about 600 million votes began, TV channel NDTV said.
Official data from the Election Commission showed the BJP ahead in 101 seats, with the main opposition Congress Party ahead in 40. There are 542 seats available.
Trends are expected to be known by noon and final results are due by Thursday evening.
The NDA’s predicted margin of victory is larger than surveys indicated in the run-up to the vote, when most polls showed it would be the largest alliance but would fall short of an overall majority. Read More

Democracy is about People’s power - a reminder to the political class from Gujarat verdict 2017
Even seasoned Psephologists / journalists with rich experience of covering elections were caught by surprise & excitement by the suspense about the Gujarat election results 2017, the victory margin of it,  till the last hour of counting. Final verdict has in fact left a strong message loud and clear that in democracy, voter is the one who has the last word that the Mighty and tall leaders cutting across party line are bound to listen to.
I need to admit that I am among those who truly believed that Gujarat would be an easy-win for BJP. When professional psephologists and the journalists conducted exit polls  also pointed the results to be in that direction, it is not uncommon for ordinary people like us to have expected the same, given the larger-than-life image & popularity of PM Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, especially in their home turf. But seeing the result where the big players of the state have managed to pull out a victory yet again but with the opposition congress getting a moral boost with much improved performance gives a sense that it is good for democracy.
I could recall very vividly Dr.Prannoy Roy of NDTV mentioning after the UP state election results, which was swept by BJP “ We are living in Modi nation. 2019 is now a given. Opposition can start preparing for 2024 election” It’s quite unusual comment for a person like Dr.Roy to make but such was the aura of PM Modi then and keeping that in view one could only think Gujarat would in all probability an easy-walk for BJP. But as they say, no trend is necessarily long lasting is politics.Gujarat, the home ground of today’s top two leaders of BJP, made them work hard to the fullest of their energy and all the resources of the party to secure a marginal win.
It is important to acknowledge here the arrival of Rahul Gandhi in his new avatar, though BJP is still reluctant to recognize the new energy RaGa seems to have  discovered and is able to generate within his party. Mr.Gandhi for the first time during this Gujarat election looked a formidable competitor material, though he still have to work very hard to be able to match with Mr. Modi if he wants to be a serious challenger in 2019, he looked serious with task in hand, very focused, had a clear agenda and was talking relevant issues which made a huge appeal to the people who have seen him quite elusive in the past. When the final day road rallies of both Modi and Rahul were cancelled due to denied permission, Modi took the seaplane rally as Plan B and Rahul did a press meet. That press meet , though ad-hoc, was a great ending of his campaign that provided a perfect platform for him to make a closing arguments which I found him using very well. Some of his adversaries commented that he was  unprepared and was getting chits with hints from party colleagues. So what..? But, the points he put forward and the questions he raised were very relevant and were valid bullet points that could remain for a couple of days in the minds of the voters. It was an unplanned blessing for him. He also showed a kind of maturity and decency by toning down personal attacks during campaign and also after the results in conceding defeat gracefully and congratulating BJP for the win.
It would have been nice and a good gesture of positive politics if the Prime Minister had also acknowledged the good fight put up by the opposition and congratulating them for what they managed to gain. But the language, tone and tenor of the BJP leaders including PM Modi does carry the arrogance of 6th term win and overconfidence that the winning streak - Modiji’s Vijay Yatra in Amit Shah’s word- would continue also in rest of the country and there is absolutely no signs of any introspection for the obvious setback.
Looking back into the Historic mandate in support of BJP & Mr.Modi ( or Modi’s BJP) in 2014 national election, Modi’s charisma and BJP’s organizational strength was one of the main reasons but the other equally important reason was the UPA2′s misrule with news of scandal after scandal and above all the way the goverment and ruling coalition chose to live in denial when the country was shouting against all those big ticket corruption charges. I would emphasize Living in Denial was more annoying than the corruption itself because when you live in denial, you close the doors for any change or correction. BJP seems to have adopted the same behaviour of Living in Denial  though the issue here is not corruption but arrogance but again, it is the behaviour and probability to change is more important to the people who are very forgiving indeed and the behaviour of Living in denial is dangerous.
Coming back to Gujarat 2017 numbers and as I read it as an ordinary citizen the message from the electorate to their chosen party, the BJP is...
“ We still choose you to rule the state, not because we are absolutely happy with you, but because we still think you are probably slightly better than the other.  but please practice humble. It is We, the people who give parties win or loss, majority or minority, etc., Any ambitious target like Mission 150 is NOT just about how strong a party is or how popular the  leaders are or even how smart your election strategies are. This is democracy and Democracy is about people’s power.  If arrogance leads to a state when people’s voice are ignored, we the people always have other options as it can be seen here with Gujarat where the congress is a very close runner-up”
