you are getting fat. and you never call me even though we have a family plan. and it's free. you only visit when you need something. and you got a tattoo and i don't care if it's supposed to represent our family. you know i hate tattoos. and of all the places i could be, why would i want to be here with you? yes, you're right. it doesn't make sense. maybe it's like you said. maybe there is something out there, some new discovery that will make us feel like even smaller pieces of shit. something that explains why you still went looking for me through all of this noise. and why, no matter what, i still want to be here with you. i will always, always, want to be here with you.

ok i am not over everything everywhere all at once but tbh one thing i haven’t heard anyone talk about yet is how even in the multiverses that mostly existed as part of a joke there still managed to be a genuinely touching narrative arc in each one??? like i know the reason i feel so emotionally invested in two piñatas or two rocks is because of the greater context of the story being played across all these abstract scenarios and the same emotional signifiers taking place across each one to emphasize the relationship between evelyn and her family but i just have to appreciate the fact that there wasn’t a single moment in that movie that didn’t end up having a larger impact. the whole is greater than the sum of its parts yes, but also the parts themselves still manage to be worth something in and of themselves. god what a great movie

how do i even explain Everywhere Everything All At Once? It’s got multiverse shenanigans, sapphics, kung fu, generational trauma, taxes, rocks, romance, sausages, immigration, laundry, ADHD, nihilism, absurdism, bagels, yin yang, existential crisis, the fear of being a failure and all your choices being wrong, coming out, acceptance, choosing love and kindness despite the coldness of the universe and it’s lack of meaning, dildos, butt plugs, milfs being badasses, girlbosses, malewives, scifi, depression, passive metaphors for suicide, mother issues, ratatouille, confetti, the IRS coming for your ass, James Hong

can we also talk about michelle yeoh's delivery of the line, "stop calling me evelyn! i! am! your! mother!" bc i feel like it would've been so easy for that line to be delivered with an air of "therefore i have authority over you, therefore you have to do what i say." in some ways, the scene seems to want us to anticipate such a delivery, with every word in that second sentence punctuated by evelyn effortlessly blocking one of joy/jobu's attacks, as if it's all leading up to some grand smackdown or show of prowess. instead, the word mother is almost a sob, punctuated not by violence, but by evelyn wrapping joy/jobu in a hug and clinging onto her to stop her from killing herself.

it's not, "stop calling me evelyn bc i am your mother and you have to respect and obey me." it's "stop calling me evelyn because i am not your enemy, not your nemesis, and not the chosen one out to destroy you; stop calling me evelyn because i am your mother and i love you."

everything? everywhere. all at once.

There was a point in Everything Everywhere All At Once where I was worried they were going to show that Waymond was Evelyn "One True Love" and that the universes where Evelyn was in love with Deirdre were "mistakes" or "bad ends".

Since it’s the Waymond's speeches about being kind in the face of uncertainty that pulls Evelyn out of her Nihilistic spiral; but that doesn't happen.

The universes where she's in love with Deidre are just as important as the one's where she loves Waymond, even the goofy "hot dogs for hands" universe which itself proves pivotal for Evelyn's enlightenment and for bringing Jobu Tupaki back from the brink "Even in a stupid universe where we have hot dogs for hands, we learn to play piano with our feet" (paraphrased)

And even in a universe where they are not lovers Deirdre still matters. Evelyn goes out of her way to comfort and befriend her in the Return To Home verse, where they bond over they're marital problems and Evelyn assures her that she is NOT unlovable (and she would know; she's loved her many times)

The thing that really gets me about Everything Everywhere All at Once is that the film tells us directly that this Evelyn’s “worst life” the one in which she has failed in everything, and yet this is the one she chooses. She chooses to stay with her silly husband, their failing laundromat, and her daughter who she doesn’t always see eye to eye with but loves anyway. Just the way the movie said, there is beauty even the most imperfect versions of our lives and we should intentionally embrace that beauty in the face of the struggle, god what a sucker punch.
