Not really sure if i should be as bothered as i am about how phylactery is used in DND, since it also refers to tefillin. I saw some people on other parts of the internet discussing how phylactery is more of a translation of tefillin, and sometimes the word has just been used to mean amulet or something to do with protection in Greek, but I'd be curious to know if anyone on here had any thoughts on the matter.

#it's been on the mind for me ever since my character accidentally stole a lich's phylactery #i know some ppl have said d&d has some antisemitic stuff (idk if from actual antisemitism or just general antisemitic fantasy culture #seeping into the game) which especially makes me wonder about the representation of phylacteries and lichs #i generally haven't thought that it's a big enough deal to bring up to my dm but now that we're entering a 'kill the evil lich and try not #to get your character killed by him for stealing his phylactery' arc i wonder if that might change #would just like to talk to other ppl about the subject cause i haven't really made up my mind #especially torn cause I've never heard phylactery used in a synagogue or by any fellow Jews to mean tefillin i think i barely knew it meant #tefillin before this campaign #i knew enough to look it up when i first heard it but just cause I recognized the word didn't even know it was related to Judaism #this is one of those posts that i pray to God stays within my regular circle of mutuals and followers #personal #actually maybe i should talk to the other jew in my party to see if it bothers her. might be weird cause we're not very close but maybe #i mean i feel like she's more Jewish than me so it might be nice to hear her thoughts #hmm don't try looking this up on Tumblr you'll only find weird lore about someone's post that went viral #the more you know 🌈
