Hey, I really love your mermerc au and it got me thinking. How would the mercs react to having a love interest who is a merperson?
Scout:
My server members and I like to joke that there are places in/around the Center (the place the research and interaction between the species happens) that are known for being make-out spots. He’d probably be dragging you to these places for a deep kiss all the damn time, often just to fluster or annoy you. There’s a coral reef a few miles off the coast where the Center is located that’s his favorite.
He’s always showing off his swimming skill to you, and likes to drag you around to show you how fast he is. He always has this adorable, proud smile when you compliment one of his skills or tricks, especially if they're new.
Soldier:
He’s quite protective of you. He gets grumpy and acts coldly toward people he doesn’t know that are around you, and he can get full-on aggressive towards larger merfolk that approach you, even if you’re bigger than he is. He knows the merfolk world is much more dangerous than the human world, and he doesn’t know what he’d do if any harm came to you.
Likes to keep you physically close to him, both out of protectiveness and just enjoying when you’re near. He’s not used to people touching him, so a hug or a quick cheek kiss will turn him into jello.
Pyro:
Pyro likes to have you there for medical checkins if you’re already in a full, established relationship (they don’t have any fresh injuries, but they were once very injured in the past, and that shows in deep tissue scars. They sometimes need physical therapy to be able to swim properly). They find your presence comforting, as the physical therapy can sometimes be frustrating or uncomfortable.
They loves catching food for you, and they make sure that they know your species’ diet so they take good care of you. They also bring you pretty rocks and human trinkets from the sea floor.
Demo:
His family has a tradition of spending a certain part of the year in Scotland, and part of the year in the sea. It absolutely breaks his heart to have to leave you for months at a time, but he sends you letters (probably laminated lmao) and little gifts every week, and he gets so adorably excited when he gets back. He always jumps into the water with no regard for his clothing to hug you as soon as possible.
His family has a special hierarchy for when they’re in the ocean that places him as one of their most important warriors, so he often ends up in the center’s medical ward after fights. He’s a bit of a baby sometimes, so he likes to seek out your comfort when he’s really injured.
Heavy:
Most merfolk have unique behaviors towards mates/partners/crushes that are similar to the courting rituals of the species their tail is. Male belugas will make a lot of noise towards females they’re interested in, so as a result, Heavy tends to make lil beluga clicking noises when he’s around you. He’s a little embarrassed about it, so he’ll disregard it if you point it out.
It’s normal for smaller merfolk to hold onto the arms/fins or kinda piggyback on bigger loved ones just for safety or to make sure currents don’t pull them away, so he’s very used to his sisters and mothers holding on to him. It makes him blush a little if you trust him enough to hold on to him.
Engineer:
He's certainly not tiny (he's actually about 5'8" long), but Engineer is certainly very small for a merman, so he's pretty self-concious, both because people mock him for it and that it puts him at a physical disadvantage. He'll need some assurance that you don't think negatively of him because of his size. But when you tell him, he gives the most heart-warmingly shy smile and mutters out a soft "Thank ya, darlin'."
He collaborates with a lot of the human Center scientists, and after learning about human tech, they've made a lot of technical advancements together. When they've had a breakthrough, he always comes to you, presses a deep kiss to your lips, and excitedly explains everything to you.
Medic:
For a while, he's not very convinced that you're interested in him. I mean, who would want a partner who could accidentally kill them just by brushing tails? Besides, he's very happy on his own, thank you very much.
But eventually that hard shell wears down because honestly, he is a little affection-starved. Eventually, the center invents a fabric which is used to safely and comfortably wrap his spines, so he's completely safe to touch. After he gets to put it on, he's all over you.
Sniper:
Earning his trust is difficult sometimes, because he's so used to not depending on anyone other than his (now dead) parents or his one friend, Scout. But his reactions as you eventually break his boundaries and earn his trust, like the first time you hold his face or give him a kiss, are highkey heart-breakingly sad, but oh so worth it. Just like, imagine giving him a soft kiss and he just tears up a lil and smiles a lil and he's all shy-
He absolutely lives to be gently held or cuddled. He doesn't care if you're half his size, please hold him
Spy:
He's a little protective of you, but he doesn't stop you from doing what you want to do. He has a lot of scars from other merfolk, so he's not too happy about trusting other merfolk with being around you. Over time, though, you show him that the world isn't as cruel as he thinks it is, especially when he stops acting like a prick.
He has a lot of scars that he's pretty uncomfortable with and doesn't like talking about them. Please trace or kiss his scars and tell him that he's still handsome, but he might melt to the point he dissolves in the water /j

Mer!Medic X Reader Imagine
y’all thought I forgot huh /j
WARNING: I thought everything up as I went and didn’t reread or edit, so this probably reads like a shitty wattpad fanfic written by a 12 year old, you know, the kind that’s probably all in one paragraph
Medic, of course, is scarily intelligent in some ways, and a complete idiot in others. So of course he didn’t think of wearing any protective gear when experimenting with the tech the Center had lent him, and ended up burning his belly and tail with chemicals.
You were the one assigned to treat him, but that also meant that you had to explain what the plan for his treatment was to him. He’d have to be kept out of the ocean and in a shallow tank of specially medicated water, which didn’t smell too great because of what it was treated with. And, of course, he was not happy about that. The hard part about it was keeping a straight face as you explained, because he kept making these stupid pouty expressions and moping around like a little kid.
The Center had ended up putting him in the night before you started his treatment, so he’d spent the whole night moping and fully intended to dramatically groan and whine when you came in to treat him, because he’s a big baby who likes attention. But this idea quickly disappeared when you finally arrived, wearing some kind of wetsuit.
“What do you even need that for?” he asked, clearly surprised and confused, as he’d never seen you wearing one, and was wondering why you’d need one for water that’s about a foot deep.
You explained that the suit was especially made by the Center to protect human skin against the venomous merfolk and fish. (In case you don’t know, lionfish spines are venomous, and due to his size Medic produces a lethal amount). He was clearly confused by this idea- he understood why and how, but he was so used to nobody ever wanting to touch him that the idea of you willingly touching him was shocking.
During the first few days of treatment, it was honestly awkward. It was almost like those videos of dogs wearing booties for the first time- he was silent and clearly weirded out with the touch, often squirming unintentionally or wincing, and clearly not liking the bandages, which were stiff and sticky to make sure they stay on. Over time, he eventually got used to it, and clearly started to like it. He always had the biggest smile when you came in with the suit on. He loved being able to spend alone time with you and enjoy your touch, because he honestly doesn’t remember the last time someone willingly touched him. You take notice of this, of course, and make sure to take your time with his treatment.
As his skin healed and he was nearing the end of his treatment, he started moping again, not wanting to stop receiving physical affection from you. He was clearly upset, his mood dropping after every appointment. This didn’t go unnoticed, however.
You nervously ask a higher-up in the Center to let the suit be permanently assigned to you, using the fact that you’re usually assigned to Medic whenever he needs care as an excuse to keep it all the time. Luckily, it’s granted.
Next time you see Medic, you’re sitting on an over-the-water railing, wearing the suit. (Let’s just say that you were testing the water or something lmao). He was about to ask why you still had the suit on, but was surprised when you reached down and dragged your fingers through his dark hair. “I noticed how happy it made you, so I asked if I could keep it. They said yes,” you explained.
A huge grin spread on his face, and of course his over-dramatic ass had to grab you and pull you into the water with him. While you yelped and exclaimed about how cold the water was, he practically melted into you, hugging you tightly and burying his face in your shoulder. I hope you like being in the water, because he’s not gonna let go of you for a while.

Can you write more headcanons about mermerc au with a love interest that studies and takes care of them?
Scout:
He’s an incredibly fast and agile swimmer, and he absolutely loves to show this off to you. He’s always doing flips and all kinds of little tricks to show off in front for you, and he’ll brag a whole lot more than normal if you’re actively studying something like his muscle structure or his swimming abilities.
If you two end up actually dating, he’ll always be swimming over to you when you’re near or in the water to try and get kisses from you. He pouts a lot if you tell him no, but he gets over it quickly.
Scout can and often does make all sorts of dolphin noises, like clicking when hunting. He often lets out those little whines and squeals when he sees his partner, as he always gets excited when he sees them.
Soldier:
Solly is known to be a very rough and rambunctious individual. This isn’t helped by the fact that he’s pretty big and muscular, as most shark merfolk are, and usually scares people with his sharp canines. With you, though, he’s incredibly gentle and careful. He knows he could hurt or scare you easily, but he’s so careful that there’s basically no chance of that ever happening.
He spends most of his time hunting, and he often brings you back fresh fish/crabs/whatever for you to eat. He gets rather excited to bring you food, almost like a puppy bringing you a ball. He’s completely baffled by the idea of NOT eating fish if you don’t for any reason, but he respects it completely and will start bringing you other cool things.
Pyro:
Pyro has burn scars over a part of their chest and arms, has tendencies to get very anxious, and is selectively mute, which show that they’re been through a lot in life. But they’re still a very cheerful and happy person most of the time, and they’re a very bubbly, and lovey around you. They know they have their ups and downs, and they’re so grateful to have someone as wonderful as you to help them through it.
Pyro likes to make little trinkets and jewelry out of things they find in the ocean. This includes stuff like shells, pretty rocks, and unfortunately often trash or debris. They give you all of the pretty, naturally made stuff they make, and they’re over the moon if you like what they make for you.
Demo:
Despite staying on land for most of the time, selkies do eventually have to return to the ocean. So his clan has a very old tradition where, for 4 months out of the year, they return to the ocean and don’t come back until the end of this period. It seriously breaks his heart to leave his friends behind, especially you. But when he makes it back, he’s so, so excited and smothers you in a tight bear hug before telling you about his family’s adventures and showing you things he brought you.
He’s a very silly, playful man, but he plays it up as he flirts with you. He plays games and goofs off with you, often in his seal form. He really enjoys making you laugh or smile, and it always gets him smiling too.
Heavy:
Heavy’s devoted his life to protecting his sisters and mother, so when he becomes romantically interested in you, this protectiveness he had for them is extended to you. If you’re ever out near the water and can/are interacting with other merfolk, he’s always keeping an eye on you or staying close to you, especially when someone he doesn’t trust (like Soldier or Spy) or someone he doesn’t know is around you. But of course, he respects your independence, privacy, and boundaries and will stop if you ask.
This dude is huge, literally like 800-900 pounds of pure muscle, and is bigger than most merfolk. Despite this, he’s incredibly gentle with/around you and would never hurt you.
Engie:
He’s an incredibly friendly and curious merman already, so he’s always chatting with you and/or asking you questions when you’re around the center. He does his best not to annoy you, but he’s such a sweet and sociable man that he rarely gets on your nerves. He loves learning about the human world, especially its technology. He’s fascinated by the tech the researchers use to study the menfolk’s bodies and psychology, and there’s often an exchange of information between Engie and the researchers.
He’s pretty small for a merman and isn’t able to defend himself very well, so he stays close to the center most of the time. So he gets to see you pretty often, which he doesn’t have any problems with.
Medic:
Medic’s attraction to you is rather bizarre, but pretty adorable. He has a huge, almost kid-like crush on you despite constantly being flirted with by other merfolk, because he’s pretty attractive by merfolk standards especially because of his colorful tail. He just finds your personality and how you treat him much more charming than than the merfolk that chase him around.
Of course, his tail is venomous, like normal lionfish, so he could probably count the number of times he can remember someone willingly touching him on his fingers. He’s unbearably touch-starved as a result. Luckily, there are rubber gloves supplied at the base, and he’d completely melt if you were to use them to touch or pet him.
Sniper:
Sniper has a distrust of humans because he was caught and almost killed by trappers. After getting injured again, he’s forcefully brought to the center by his best friend, Scout. He’s furious about being stuck at the facility, but he’s too injured to escape. He’s extremely hostile to every human that approaches him, often needing to be subdued. But over time, he becomes less and less hostile towards you. Eventually he doesn’t fight with you at all. He’s never been treated as kindly as you treat him, and because of your kindness, he can’t help but fall in love.
He’s fiercely protective of you. He doesn’t like other people touching you unless it’s a close friend or relative of yours, and will place himself between you and other merfolk if he can. If you tell him to stop, though, he’ll certainly try.
Spy:
Like Sniper, he’s wary of humans, but he isn’t aggressive unless humans push him out of his comfort zone. He only comes to the center to watch over Scout, at first, and he meets you through Scout. It takes a long while, but he eventually warms up to you. At first, he’s only curious about you, but as he gets to know you better he ends up crushing on you pretty hard.
He’s not subtle about his attraction to you; he follows you around when you’re near the water and giving you compliments and flirts. Unlike his relationships in the past, this is a romantic interest, not an attempt at seduction. So his flirts are ridiculously sweet, not sexual. He’s always happy to see you, and he wants to make sure you know.

The Mermerc AU Universe:
All the mercenaries are merfolk or something similar.
Honestly, that’s it. I have no lore or anything.
Potentially, they could be living in a sanctuary where Miss Pauling (and possibly the Reader if we insert one into the story) are assigned to take care of them, or possibly a center for the exchange of information between the two races? Idk honestly
They all typically eat the diet of their fish species, but can eat other foods.
Merfolk typically vary in sizes a lot more than humans. I will talk about their heights here. But since tails also vary in length, the height I will mention would be their height IF THEY HAD LEGS. So don’t think the height I mention is their actual length, it’s more for being able to visualize their general size compared to normal people.
Mermerc!Scout:
Common Bottlenose Dolphin
70 in
Incredibly skilled and fast swimmer despite being a lot smaller than the others, loves to flex this fact and race anyone who will race him.
Has a few small scars from fighting merfolk from other pods.
Has an almost child-like fascination with the human world and wishes he could see it himself.
Mermerc!Soldier:
Great White Shark
74.5 in
Has sharp teeth and often shows them off when he jokes about eating one of the others, but he’d never do that.
He’s been in a whole lot of fights, so he has a lot of scars all over his body.
Unlike normal sharks, he can stop moving and prefers to while sleeping.
Mermerc!Pyro:
Mexican Squirrelfish; red variety

Still has a fascination with fire, loves to sit on the shore with visiting humans if they have a bonfire.
Hates going into deep water, partly due to being smaller like Scout, and likes to stay in reefs or near the shore, and likes visiting humans.
Incredibly playful and loves games. Kinda the baby of the group.
Mermerc!Demoman:
Selkie; Grey Seal
73 in (Actual height, as his form is fully human)
Due to being a selkie, he does not have a half and half form; he has a full human form and a full seal form, so he can go on land, and does so regularly.
The colony he came from was basically the DeGroot clan; his parents were part of the leading group and he was a warrior.
Mermerc!Heavy:
Beluga whale

Has allowed his sisters to go explore, but his mother often stays with him
Of course, he’s had to defend his family from the dangers of the open ocean, so he’s had to fight off many predators and has a pretty scarred up body. It’s kinda easy though, as he’s a bigger than canon Heavy and the biggest one any of the others have met.
Mermerc!Engie:
Clownfish

He’s easily the smallest member of the group. That combined with not being a great fighter makes him pretty vulnerable.
He’s pretty curious about humans’ advancements, especially technology and science. He’d be able to pick it up very easily if someone were to teach him about it.
Mermerc!Medic:
Lionfish

He’s got a beautiful tail and breathtaking fins, and he knows it. He often flaunts his appearance and loves to show off, to humans and merfolk alike.
He’s probably revolutionized merfolk medicine, even though he obtained it through less than humane means.
Mermerc!Sniper:
Tiger Shark

Kind of suspicious of humans; he was probably trapped and almost taken by humans once, which gave him a few scars on top of several fight scars. One could gain his trust over time, though.
Doesn’t get along well with most of the others, but sometimes he chills with Spy or Scout.
Mermerc!Spy:
Mimic Octopus

Kind of elusive; he hides out pretty often and doesn’t like some of the others, but there are quite a few humans he likes to come to shore and talk with.
He can’t hide his face, so most people can see the scars he has on his face. He refuses to talk about them.

Stuff I WILL Do: Angst; gore; injuries; death; suggestive/innuendo; Merc X OC; abuse only if it is in the character’s past. Neurodivergency, mental health, and poly/queer relationships are a little unfamiliar to me but I’m willing to take the challenge of writing it.
Stuff I WON’T Do: Explicit NSFW; Merc X Merc; yandere; rape; mercs being abusive or predatory; large age gaps; incest; pedophilia
I usually open requests for be done in groups, and I don’t open again for another batch until I’ve finished the first one. I try to take around 10, but I’m fine with having 11-13 so it’s not set.
The more characters assigned to a request, the shorter/less detailed the head canons will be, due to how long it takes to write tons of content for a long list of characters.
I usually write the S/O to be gender neutral so anyone can self-project, but if you’d like a specific gender let me know.
For matchups, please make it clear if you want a platonic or romantic matchup. You can also clarify if there’s any characters that you’re not interested in so I won’t pick them, and you can ask for a specific character.
For now, you can only request TF2 and Fallout 4 characters. Please put at the beginning of your request: (TF2) for the TF2 mercenaries, and (F4) for the Fallout 4 companions. This is just so that there’s no possibility of misunderstanding which characters you want me to write.
Please only request characters from one game, for organizational purposes. Please don’t mix multiple games (EX: Asking for Sniper and Paladin Danse in a single request).
I only work on one request at a time. It works on a first-come-first-serve basis; I do all of them in order of when I received them.
I can turn down any request.
