Guilty pleasure: the shark fin

Last year (or earlier, don't remember) I came across a TV ad with Yao Ming advocating a ban on eating shark fins. Turns out the rest of the world has been against the practice too.

But unfortunately the shark fin had long been one of my favorite Chinese culinary delicacies. I don't blame you for judging me. But keep in mind that not all Asian gourmet enthusiasts are cold-blooded whalers, shark-fin hunters, and illegal poachers. 

Since the first time I had it in a meal, I was hooked. My maternal grandma used to be a regular shark fin eater when she was a young girl.

The shark fin was more than just food; it was regarded as a status symbol. They were coveted gift items along with the birds' nest (more like collagen-loaded bird saliva). Lots of folks didn't afford even a handful back in early 20th century.

Things changed and in '10s, animal right activists have protested and they seem to be winning. Good for them sharks.

I'm thankful that quitting shark-fin eating is easier than smoking/drinking. For more than a year I haven't touched a shark fin and probably never will, given the scarce number of the species and the consequences of losing them forever.
