Hey so. What if Harper and Emery were close as children.
What if they would make fun of each other and bicker and throw each other under the bus but in the end they did care about each other. Because that’s what siblings do!!!
Do you think Harper’s naive loathing towards the wealthy (of which she is a part) and Emery’s grudge against his father stemmed from the same late night conversations, about how their parents were definitely hiding something from them, about how weird it is to have parties for people you hardly know, about music and math homework and about anything at all??
Would they ever have approached each other’s room just for the sake of not having to lay in the deafening silence of the manor???
And then they get older and things get weird between them, and Emery’s spitefulness starts to rear it’s ugly head, and suddenly them simply being civil is the exception and not the rule.
What if Emery’s arrest affected Harper way more then she let on?

the justice siblings are so like...THE pair of people ever.
like, one of them is a thief, the other one killed (his dad).
they both just want to be cool. they both just want to be SEEN by others.
(just deep down, VERY, VERY insecure.)
they both have money/material possessions as the crux of their issues... (ie, emery with heavy gambling, and harper with being VERY convinced that she's poor.)
like, i feel like they hate being compared to each other, but when you really break it down, they're pretty much just the same person at different enviromental factors.
anyways. my headcanon is that
harper's "dexterity" and mannerisms as a thief came from her watching emery play boy-scout around the house. like, this girl doesn't know how to keep secrets, but she WILL lace her boots with a sheepshank knot.

DRAWTECTIVES SEASON 1 SPOILERS AHEAD!
Thinking about Emery and Harper Justice from drawtectives and like... the stark contrast in how they were raised and supported by their parents because clearly Harper gets excessive support from her parents bc otherwise she would be homeless bc of how frequently she gets arrested and how much she drinks
Meanwhile Emery tried to be independent and when hitting hard times with gambling due to speculations of his job closing down tried to call on his parents for assistance (to set him up in a new position, not even to get money!) And they told him to get by on his own.
Like maybe I'm misunderstanding it but it definitely reads as older sibling being neglected in favour of younger siblings and snapping in a (HUGELY) unhealthy way.
Not to excuse what he did tho still a murderer but God damn do I relate to that feeling of like, being the one to be quiet and not ask for anything bc I see how much help everyone else needed.

[ID: a messy sketch in black and white. Harper justice has a smug look on her face. She’s wearing a t-shirt that says “FUCK MY BROTHER” in all caps. She has sunglasses resting on her head. She holds a leash that is attached to her dog Harold. In the background, Emery Justice is behind bars. He looks very angry and is probably shouting. End ID]

Spoilers for S1 obviously
I was thinking “I’m gonna do socialist readings for my favourite shows, let start with Drawtectives.”
Except then I noticed it literally has a plot about workers rights and how the upper class views itself. Like it is not even trying to be subtle with it:
Drawtectives is a Socialist Webseries
We begin with the murder itself. Sorin Justice is killed by Emery Justice, his son, due to his money troubles, and the fact that his father refused to assist him again.
Emery
Emery Justice is shown to be a very spoiled man who believes he just sort of deserves everything due to his high status and “skill”, while complaining about his sister lacking in sincere anti-bourgeois activism. This, along with rumours of his troop’s camp being shut down, leads to his being completely flippant with money, and gambling all of it away. He then asked Sorin and Lotta to use their money to set him up at a new job, but they told him he must earn that. He goes on to, as previously mentioned, send a ransom note extorting money out of his parents, and later on decided it was more worth stealing his parent’s wealth, during which Sorin entered the room, and in desperation, Emery killed him with the family knife.
There are already many things to unpack here. First of all, Emery’s personality. He is very full of himself and has a lot of pride in his family, and therefore believes he is entitled to their riches. This is the classic kid-born-into-a-rich-family. Even though his parents had always taught him he needed to earn his share, he still felt entitled to it.
As for that “earning your share” bit. This could be taken in two very opposite directions, and I will defend the one I have chosen later on once we go into Soren and Lotta.
There’s one way it could be interpreted, as a typical capitalist “you must earn all that you make. Money must be earned, not given.” Which is reasonable given the words themselves.
However it could also be taken in the sense that Emery is not improving the lives of those around him, and he doesn’t truly need the money. He’s in gambling debt, not trying to pay his rent. He played too many rounds of poker, it’s not that he’s had too many medical problems lately. He doesn’t truly apply to the need in “to each according to his needs.” And he is not contributing almost anything to his community, so why should this wealth be given to him? This second interpretation is the one I believe Sorin and Lotta intended.
Third we have that special knife which I’ll get to later.
Sorin and Lotta
Sorin and Lotta are probably the most clear examples of socialists in the entirety of the series. They’re part of the Shadow Vault along with Sam Ug and unnamed others, which is an information network focused on the wellbeing of the working class. Jorgan’s and Borgan’s was being investigated by the Shadow Vault due to suspected violations of worker’s rights, with Avis as an informant (is he part of the Shadow Vault? I guess??), this is literally Lotta and Sorin using their positions of wealth to benefit the working class. It cannot get more clear than this.
In fact this was such a big part of their whole deal, that shortly after they married they were contacted by the Shadow Vault themselves.
In fact they have taken down an exploitative company before, probably multiple, as we can see with the family knife, which was made by a group of workers because they wanted to, rather than because they were being payed to. Classic part of socialist philosophy.
Harper
Harper is an interesting case, since she’s an example of the type of socialist who refuses to fully denounce the parts of capitalism that benefit her, at least before the end of Season 1. Much of her character is being smug and spoiled by her parents, but still thinking she’s fighting the system. She steals from rich people, yet still gets bailed out jail, and her parents still use their money to get her out of a sentence. (I’ll touch on this later). She thinks she hates rich people yet she continually uses the benefits of her parents as bourgeoisie to improve her life, and she justifies it as “stealing from the rich”, somehow not realizing she is the rich person. However of course, it seems she’s gotten better in Season 2. She’s fully independent from her family, and ofc is taking care of Harold :)
Problems with the Justice family
Sorin and Lotta may do their best to protect worker’s rights, it is undeniable that they, and their children, are a product of capitalism.
First of all, despite their concern over labour practices, the Justices still hoard mass amounts of valuables. It’s what Emery was trying to steal. They may like fair labour practices but they refused to redistribute.
Emery is, as stated before, a classic case of entitled rich kid. However Lotta states that they got him “the best education”, and they gave him as many resources as possible. Resources that not many people could access clearly. Once again using their wealthy status to benefit their own family instead of trying to redistribute.
Harper is arguably the worst case scenario for a rich family like the Justices. She literally had her parents use their wealth to get her out of punitive action or prison time. This is one of the most clear examples of the bourgeoisie taking advantage of the capitalist system to benefit themselves.
Conclusion
Overall, while there are many socialist themes, and three of the four Justices had good intentions, they all benefited from their wealth. None of them truly did what they could have, and did exploit their wealth for themselves.
However it is also important to note the main conflict in the series (once the mystery was solved), that being a young rich kid who felt entitled to the wealth he grew up with once he had left it murdering his father, who’s entire being in the story centered around worker’s rights.
It may not exactly be capitalism vs socialism, but it’s definitely close to a bourgeoisie vs the proletariat conflict.
Hope you enjoyed reading! Sorry if this post is a mess, I wrote it over the course of like a week and a half 😅

//DRAWTECTIVES FINALE SPOILERS//
Oops, it’s time for sincere Drawtectives fanart.
Just something about Emery being described as “really remorseless” and how cold and self-serving he was and how sad Lotta is and her talking about going down to talk to Emery as he’s being arrested really struck me. I dunno I got Drawtectives feels.
Sillier Drawtectives fanart coming soon.
