As they swooped over the surface, she realised the tranquility was deceptive - everywhere she looked there was movement and life. Otters tumbled together in play, ducks squabbled as they bobbed for tasty morsels or flew overhead and fish nudged the water lilies as they hunted for flies while newts and frogs took sudden fright as the embroiderer walked by, diving to the dark green depths. She could see something stirring deep below the water and wondered what it could be...ghostly inhabitants of the old Roman villa, still searching for their treasure? Or a formidable pike, lurking in the weeds and waiting for dinner to approach? The embroiderer sat at the edge of the water, gazing across to the far hills as she contemplated her next works.
