I am sorry, but what the fuck? CIA's DMARC record is set to none. For those who do not know, DMARC is a thing that prevents people from sending emails from your email address. This basically means that anyone could (although illegally, and logs would be kept on CIA's servers) send emails from, for example, [email protected]. Are they trying to trap & catch criminals? Or did they just... forget to set it back to reject spoofed emails?

You Are the Weakest Link.
Ok, disclaimer time; I work for the company that has made People-Centric Security their mantra.
That being said, people are the weakest link in your organization. I don't care how much you think your end users are savvy, well-trained, or able to not click on links, they are still your weakest link. Add to that the fact of phishing emails are still the number one attack vector for cybersecurity, in terms of volume of attacks, and you have a ripe conditions for your end users to click on something bad.
I'm gonna be a bit non-PC here; Every organization has one of those people who's just shy of retirement, in their 60's, they're fantastic at what they do, but they're not very computer savvy because the 80's was absolutely horrible about telling us how computers really worked (remember pop culture taught us that every computer was sentient, robots were common, and computers could control anything electronic even without a network interface).
Well, those people will click on stuff. Email about a package that won't be delivered? Oh, I'd better click on that. A PDF warning me that we're late on a payment and going to get sued? I'd better open that.
So how do we fix that?
Well, there's no one magic bullet to stop that. It needs to be a multi-tiered approach.
First off, end user training. Train them to look at the email address and confirm it matches messages they previously have received. Train them to stop and think before they click. Train them to reach out to IT if there is ANY question about a message's authenticity. Quite a few organizations offer it: Mimecast, Udemy, KnowBe4, Proofpoint to name a few. They typically offer more bells and whistles if you subscribe to their email filtering services as well (if they offer it).
Second, try and stop those messages at the perimeter. It's sad but true that email security, for the most part, is a reactive science/art. All of the big security companies still react to threat actors and threat campaigns. That being said, a number of things will help; warning tags on authentication failures. Heightened security scanning on a list of impersonation targets. A sanity check on any request from an email that asks for monetary changes.
Third, work with your security vendors and buy into any integrations they may have. If your email security vendor can integrate with your firewall to analyze incoming URLs real-time, do it. If you have a workstation monitoring vendor who can analyze clicked links, set that thang up.
Finally, the line between security and usability is often a thick, blurry line. Don't fall into the trap of letting the business side lower your security posture because "we have to click three extra times". All it takes is one bad click and you're the next Equifax ... and you're not in the position to survive what they did. They're one of three companies that do what they do. I'm not saying ignore business processes, I'm saying inform your end users that in the long run choosing complete ease-of-use over security is the wrong choice.

Study exposes hidden mental health toll of ransomware - CyberTalk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Ransomware can be a living nightmare.
It has the potential to not only shut down network access, but also to bring internal operations to a standstill and to cripple supply chains, affecting the availability of goods and services.
Moreover, it can result in reputational damage, legal consequences and can even push a business towards insolvency.
However, ransomware’s potential impact goes beyond the operational and financial — it can take a significant toll on the emotional well-being of business owners and cyber security staff.
Ransomware research reveals…
According to new research that explores the harmful effects of the cyber criminal ecosystem beyond financial repercussions, in rare instances, ransomware attacks on small businesses can leave owners and employees feeling suicidal.
Partly funded by the U.K’s National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), the study found a cyber security specialist for whom a ransomware attack was so mentally damaging that the incident nearly resulted in their stepping off of a ledge.
The researchers also discovered a law enforcement officer personally familiar with the case of an IT staffer who ended his life after a ransomware attack.
Ransomware and PTSD
Some cyber defenders have described dramatic states of mental distress, with some reportedly experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Research indicates that 1 out of every 7 employees experiences trauma symptoms months after a cyber attack.
After recognizing the pressure that the IT team was under, one organization brought in professional PTSD support staff.
Ransomware’s mental health impact
“…psychological harm can reach far beyond the immediate response to a specific incident, affecting an individual’s wider professional life and impacting their personal life,” wrote the study’s authors.
For incident responders, the gravitas of potential litigation, the protracted periods of working to remediate systems, the loss of time with loved ones, the frustrations that stem from the inability to support a partner and child/ren with childcare and other variables, can all contribute to the substantial mental health toll exacted by ransomware.
Ransomware rates escalating
Against a backdrop of increasing ransomware attacks — a rate increase estimated in the ballpark of more than 200%, says Microsoft — the mental health impact associated with ransomware can no longer remain in the shadows.
According to an IBM study, 81% percent of cyber security incident responders stated that the increase in ransomware attacks has “exacerbated the psychological demands associated with cybersecurity incidents.” In other words, ransomware can lead to challenging psychological circumstances.
Bringing greater perspective to the issue, “When you’re potentially what stands in the way of a malicious actor and someone being able to heat their home, get to work, or stock grocery shelves, the pressure adds up quickly,” says Laurence Dine, global lead of incident response at IBM Security X-Force.
Addressing mental health concerns
Addressing mental health concerns in cyber security requires a multi-pronged approach.
Organizations may want to hire additional cyber security staff to decrease workloads for teams, while simultaneously adopting technologies that prevent sophisticated ransomware attacks and that can recover encrypted data.
Check Point offers a wide range of security solutions designed to stop ransomware attacks across endpoint, mobile, email & collaboration applications, internet access and network environments. Get complete ransomware protection for your organization. Explore the resources below.
