Anyway @ that random fellow who asked me abt my coloring process, here we go (this is specifically for the face, bc I forgot to take picture of everything else like an idiot)
This is from my Dark!Roman DTIYS piece for eiliziarts on Instagram! Y’all can find the whole thing here: https://gl1tcheff3ct.tumblr.com/post/621320845182304256/he-was-hurt-too-much-for-a-dtiys-on-instagram 👀👀
1. Get the line art done and over with and apply a base skin color. You can make skin colors by combining red, brown, yellow, and white.
2. Start the base shading! As of late I’ve been going for more complimentary colors, so a mix of blue, green, or purple with the skin tone (depending on said skin tone) works. This will act as a base for your darkest shadow.
3. Use a darker shade of true skin tone—say a light brown mixed with a bit of the base color, in this case—to fill in the shadows surrounding the “darkest shadows”. This provides a little warmth and depth to your art. (I’m spewing absolute bullshit, this is what I think happens, sue me)
4. Add in some darker colors where you see fit! Remember to add cast shadow from the hair. When coloring faces, remember to think about where the light source is coming from, then shade based on that. Study the planes of the face!
5. (Added some hair color here) outline the thing! It makes details stand out and helps the whole piece pop out more. Also makes iit look cleaner and less muddy lmao (as a side note, the darkest shadow on the neck will usually be that small sliver where the chin covers the neck, especially in this position.)
6. Finish the thing up! Add those sweet little details!! (I forgot to take a photo of my hair process. I’m bad at these things pls don’t hurt me)
Summary: color theory is a bitch but use different colors, it’ll help. that’s all I have to say
