The Arcs - Electrophonic Chronic
En voilà un retour qui fait plaisir et qu'il faut l'avouer on n'attendait plus. Je parle de ceux dont je fais partie qui étaient tombés sous le charme de ce premier album "Yours Dreamily" paru en 2015 qui savaient que The Arcs était un side project ; on ne boudait pas notre plaisir à déguster ce petit bout d'habile revival d'un blues rock sexy et soul mais on savait qu'il pouvait s'agir d'un one shot de musiciens sans cesse pris à autre chose le reste de l'année notamment son lead qu'on ne présente plus Dan Auerbach qui venait de hisser les Black Keys à un tout autre niveau d'audience avec "El Camino". Et l'histoire semblait nous donner raison puisque les années passaient sans annonces de suite et surtout coup de massue final qui devait chlore le débat, le décès de l'autre fondateur du projet et batteur du groupe, le multi instrumentiste, songwriter et producteur Richard Swift ayant notamment officié au sein des Shins aux côtés de James Mercer. Son addiction à l'alcool et l'hepatite qui a suivi eut raison de lui en 2018 à l'âge de 41 ans.
Ainsi, ce nouvel album des Arcs, "Electrophonic Chronic" sorti le 27 janvier 5 ans après ce tragique évènement est une nouvelle preuve que de belles choses peuvent naître des pires drames et ce long format en plus d'être un plaisir musical de chaque instant est avant tout un hommage à Swift et la plus belle réponse à la mort, cette faucheuse que l'on voit apparaître sur cette pochette psychedelique, faisant ombre à un briquet où est écrit "Swift" pour mettre en image une de ses addictions mortelles et cette pomme comme symbole du fruit défendu, l'hédonisme assassin de Swift semblerait-il.
Le décor ainsi planté et les dédicaces à Swift des crédits de l'album jusque dans les clips étant légions, qu'en est-il de la musique des Arcs dépourvus de leur batteur et ami ? Et bien Dan Auerbach, Leon Michels, Nick Movshon et Homer Steinweis sont tout simplement au sommet de leur art et offrent même ce qui semble être un des plus beaux morceaux de blues soul gravé sur galette. Keep on Dreamin', Eyez, Heaven is a Place, River et Sunshine qui ouvrent l'album sont déjà chacun à leur manière des évidences intemporelles du genre, sexy, psychedeliques, pop dans leur structure et leurs melodies les rendant rapidement addictifs avant que ne s'entame la deuxième partie de l'album creusant un peu plus le blues et la soul électriques avec des titres plus conventionnels mais sans fausses notes pour autant ni une once d'ennui, les interludes elles-même étant inspirées et laissent pour seul regret de ne pas être devenues de vrais morceaux entiers tant tous les ingrédients sont là.
Cerise sur le gâteau donnant un cachet si particulier à Electrophonic Chronic, l'experience en tant que producteur et les années en studio de Leon Michels bien sûr mais surtout de Dan Auerbach. On ne va pas revenir dans cet article sur la carrière des Black Keys, la multitude de musiciens dont il a produit les albums ni même de toutes les signatures de son label Easy Eye Sound mais la science de la production est bien là, cette patine psychédelique et 70's sur tous les instruments, ces effets de voix qui servent les morceaux, tout est juste et Auerbach paraît ici plus inspiré et savoureux qu'au sein de son groupe principal, allez comprendre...
Vous l'aurez compris "Electrophonic Chronic" est une des très belles sorties de ce début d'année, probablement un des plus savoureux albums de 2023 et en tout cas un incontournable pour tout amateur de blues et de soul qui attendent toujours qu'on vienne dépoussierer le genre !
Allez, on monte dans cette belle Cadillac cabriolet avec le regretté Richard Swift au volant et on s'envole pour les étoiles et les routes infinies. Ciao l'artiste.

BLUES ROCK/NEO-PSYCHEDELICA · 2023
Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys has another band!
I like the variety of bluesy instruments deployed on this record; elements of old and new combine for a beautifully melancholy vibe.
Some of the songs leave little to no impression, but the ones that are memorable are some of the better rock songs I've heard in a long time. I love the commentary on technologically induced isolation ("Behind the Eyes"). "Only One for Me" is also an excellent swan song for the LP.

The Arcs - Electrophonic Chronic
WOW, this is a great album! musically it's just such a nice sound! it has this INCREDIBLY soulful, psychedelic sound that makes it feel almost like music for space prom! the album was released as a way to pay homage to one of the former band members, Richard Swift, who passed while the album was being written, and it's such a wonderful tribute. there are so many beautiful songs on this album, but a few stuck out to me in particular:
Heaven Is A Place
a love song which blends the rock and soul elements of this album together perfectly, Heaven Is A Place essentially talks about how wonderful it is to be in love on earth, and imagining what it'd be like to love in heaven. the concept is clear, the song has some GREAT musical breaks - absolutely FILTHY guitar riffs on this one - and all in all it's just a wonderful love song!
A Man Will Do Wrong
one thing i think this album does well is taking this almost 60s/70s vibe and modernising it, and i feel like A Man Will Do Wrong is a perfect example of this. again, incredibly soulful, this song is another really sweet and passionate love song, describing the lengths that a man will go to in the name of love. there's something really innocent about the song that just makes it so endearing - i could definitely imagine slow dancing to this in the evenings, it's so sweet!
Only One For Me
Only One For Me is the final track on the album and is incredibly reminiscent of the big, soulful heartbreak anthems of the 70s. there's this organ motif that crops up throughout which really adds to this feel, but i think what really gets me on this is the lyrics - the song is about coming to the realisation that The One may not be out there, and accepting that love may need to come from within. a gloomy message, maybe, but i think it's done super well here! a wonderful track to end on.

i started listening to this album pretty late in the evening, and i think the vibes of the play - this almost retro-galactic soul prom feel - really fit that kind of listening! it's another tender album, and one that i think is definitely worth a listen!
