The SS Bustard
Tumblr media
So I had an idea for a spaceship...
The SS Bustard is a ring-shaped craft that features “artificial” gravity. In the center of the ship, held in place by elecromagnetism, is a piece of dark matter. Though only a hundred feet in diameter, this super-dense object has a gravitational pull strong enough the make anyone walking the halls feel as though they’re walking on earth.
The two dark grey stripes are areas made of lead and smaller pieces of dark matter to shield passengers from the radiation of the nuclear engines. Located in the lower, lighter-grey part of the Bustard, the engine rooms are known as No-Man’s-Land; only specialized robots are allowed there, as any living creature would die upon contact with such extreme radiation.
The Bustard is a cargo ship, but it is not designed to enter the atmosphere of any planet. Instead, smaller cargo ships go to and from the ship and the destination planet.
It’s the setting for a short story that may turn into something not-so-short, so stay tuned.

I feel like there are people less well versed in science who would appreciate knowing that any physical object not at absolute zero is emitting elecromagnetic radiation at all frequencies. That is to say, technically everything is shining with every color of the rainbow; it's just hard to see.

Magpyre ⟶ (Dusk Stone) Ravurn Magpyre ⟶ (Shiny Stone) Phoeborn #093 - Magpyre (magpie + pyre) Immolation Pokémon Dark/Fire-type Once a symbol of augury and the unknown, they have adapted well to cities and are responsible for most bin fires. Moveset: Leer, Ember, Peck, Astonish, Smog, Fire Spin, Confuse Ray, Night Shade, Will-o-wisp, Hex, Flame Burst, Beat Up, Pursuit, Sucker Punch, Wing Attack, Gust, Ominous Wind, Flatter, Nasty Plot, Snarl, Thief, Tailwind, Mean Look #094 - Ravurn (raven + urn) Immolation Pokémon Ghost/Fire-type Legends say that a phoenix burned too hot and was reduced to ashes, but the grudge that endured could act beyond death. Base Stats: 60/55/90/125/90/80 (500) Ability: Insomnia/Flash Fire/[Weak Armor] (The first physical attack used against this pokemon will not do damage, but its defense will drop and speed will increase. Subsequent hits don't have the immunity component) Moveset: Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Dark Pulse, Shadow Ball, Memento, Curse, Pain Split, Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Haze, Spite, Grudge, #095 - Phoeborn (phoenix + reborn) Immolation Pokémon Light/Fire-type It was reborn as a creature of cold fire. It uses its spectral light to find hidden treasures and expose liars, who it will burn utterly. Base Stats: 75/80/60/110/80/95 (500) Ability: Illuminate (now has an in-battle effect: nullifies moves and abilities that obscure vision)/Flame Body/[Consecrate] (activates light-type environmental effect on switch-in) Moveset: Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Overheat, Psychic, Energy Ball, Hurricane, Burn Up, Mystical Fire, Beacon, Dawn Call, Dazzle, Heaven's Light, Illumination, Light Blast, Lightmote, Shining Eye, Sunbeam, Sunmote, Sunburst, Purifying Fire I'm not 100% happy with Phoeborn so I'll probably revisit it when I have a better idea. Fake type alert: The Light-type is of course based on light from the sun, stars, electrical and firelight, etc. but also the full elecromagnetic spectrum-- i.e. radiation. It's also based on the fantasy of purification, celestial beings, and divine justice. Light attacks can cause the Blinded status effect (BLN), which sharply decreases accuracy, although some pokemon are not affected. Currently in my notes I have the following type effectivenesses: Attacking: 2x vs Dark, Ghost, Cosmic; 0.5x vs Fire, Grass, Steel, Crystal, Light Defending: 2x damage from Ground, Dark; 0.5x damage from Fire, Electric, Fairy, Light, Cosmic The Light-type will never happen in the games since they've gone and made a Sun and Moon pokemon without introducing it, but it's fun.

This paper reviews research that points to an association between elecromagnetic fields and cancer.
PMID:  Oncology (Williston Park). 1996 Apr ;10(4):563-70; discussion 573-4, 577-8. PMID: 8723289 Abstract Title:  Nonionizing electromagnetic fields and cancer: a review. Abstract:  Low-frequency electromagnetic radiation had previously been thought to cause human injury only by generation of excess heat or by shock from direct contact with electric current. Information accumulating over the past few decades, however, suggests that nonionizing electric and magnetic fields associated with this radiation may be an environmental etiology in human disease. Human beings are affected not only by natural background nonionizing electromagnetic fields produced by the Earth, but also by a host of manmade sources. Of the diseases believed related to these fields, cancer and participation of these fields in the carcinogenic process have received considerable attention. This paper is a review of the basic science that points to this possible association.
