Episode 42 - Showdown! Pokemon Gyms!
The town of Dark City has been laid to ruin by the Pokemon equivalent of a dojo rivalry. Yas and Kaz are two would-be Gyms each seeking official League sponsorship, but who can only become this town's official Pokemon Gym by first destroying the other. And so their endless battles have destroyed much of the town.
This is a really neat concept. Kaz uses Electabuzz as their signature Pokemon. So, naturally, Yas's signature is Electabuzz's version rival Magmar Scyther? Um. Okay. Scyther's Flying type means this isn't much of a rivalry. Kaz wins.
(Though, also, I hate to tell Kaz this, but Kanto already has an Electric Gym so there's zero chance they get certified. At least Yas's Bug Gym has a reason to exist.)
Kaz employs Team Rocket, but unlike the last rivalry, Ash refuses work from Yas. Both of these assholes are just profiteering gangs looking to use Pokemon to get rich.
Having learned that the color red drives both Electabuzz and Scyther into a frenzy, Ash devises a plan to troll both dojos. During a major battle between the two, he coats the two leaders in red paint, setting their own Pokemon against them.
Once the leaders have had enough and are pleading for mercy, Ash drops red paint on Scyther and Electabuzz, tricking them into knocking themselves out. However I have absolutely no idea what he thought he was accomplishing here. His actions serve to unite both games in a temporary truce until they can murder him, which is the only reasonable outcome you could have expected, honestly.
Hostilities finally end when the League's formal inspector reveals herself and rejects both Gyms for certification. Because they're assholes who destroyed their town in dojo warfare. In the end, they agree to rebuild the town and turn over new leaves so they can try again for certification, and Ash is able to leave the town secure in the knowledge that these people are in good hands now.
(I give them a week before this unravels.)

PHANTASIE BOYS: Episode One
The first half of the episode introduces you to all of the members through individual interviews. During said interviews, they talk about their passion, personality, specialities, etc. In the second half, all of the members move into their new dorm, except Haoran, Mingtao, Jason and Shoji, who were already living there. The dorm has three rooms, which are split by age, and the arrangement is as follows;
Room 1: Shoji, Mingtao
Room 2: Jinho, Haoran
Room 3: Jason, Dowon, Taejoon
Here are the key points from each interview:
☁️ Shoji's Intro
“Hello,” Shoji flashes the camera a bright, toothy smile, “my name is Sasaki Shoji and I’m 23 years old.” Videos of him dancing play in the background as he begins to speak again. “I'm from Tokyo, Japan, and I've been in Korea for almost three years.”
Why do you want to debut?
“I love dancing! I can't really explain it but… I just feel best when I'm dancing.” He shuffles in his seat. “Once I got scouted I just felt like, ‘I have to go for it.’”
What is your speciality?
“Uh… well, apart from dancing, there's not much I'm good at,” he chuckles lightheartedly, “but I used to do impressions.” He begins to showcase a… questionable impression of Eleboo (Electrabuzz) and Lucky (Chansey) from Pokémon. There's a brief moment of awkward silence once he finishes, but then the camera cuts to him laughing hysterically, “are you sure this is ok?!”
☁️ Mingtao's Intro
“Hello, my name is Lǚ Míng Tāo, I am 23 and I come from New Taipei City,” he smiles politely at the camera as he speaks, “I've been training for almost two years now.”
Why do you want to debut?
“When I was at school for dance, my favourite part was always the big end of year performance we would put on.” The interview pauses briefly to show one of his dance performances from university. “I always thought It'd be great to be able to do stuff like that regularly, so I decided to become an idol once I graduated.”
What's your speciality?
“Speciality?” The camera cuts after a long pause. “…I'm good at Mahjong.” He looks behind the camera expectantly, “that won't do? Then what else am I supposed to say?” The interview ends without Mingtao showing a speciality.
☁️ Jinho's Intro
“Hello, my name is Lee Jinho, I am 22 and I have been training for around 3 years. ” He smiles gently at the camera. “I grew up in Andong, and I used to be in a band during highschool.” The video cuts to some clips of Jinho playing an electric guitar and singing in his old school uniform.
Why do you want to debut?
“Personally, I just always loved singing, especially on stage,” he smiles wistfully, “I didn’t even think about K-pop initially. I just knew that, no matter what, I had to be on stage.”
What's your speciality?
“Guitar?” He watches the faces of the staff behind the camera for a moment. “Ah, not related to music or dance? Then… maybe push-ups? I think I can do about 30 in a minute.” He actually does the push-ups, 32 infact, in 2.5x speed.
☁️ Haoran's Intro
“Hello! My name is Yú Hào Rán and I am 21 years old.” His excitement practically jumps through the screen, and the wide smile on his face is blinding. “I was born and raised in Guangzhou, China, but I've been training in Korea for five- going on six- years!”
Why do you want to debut?
“Originally, I wanted to study musical theatre and work as an actor.” As he speaks, a scene from one of his old performances plays. “But I also really loved listening to groups like Exo, and I became more interested in K-pop idols than theatre.”
What's your speciality?
“Ah! I've been waiting for this question!” He eagerly sits up in his seat as he rolls up his sleeves. “Watch.” He extends his arm to the side, and his forearm is slightly bent below his elbow at around 200 degrees. “Why don't you guys look surprised?” He pouts slightly, flapping the arm for good measure.
☁️ Jason's Intro
“Hello, my name is Jason Lee, I'm from L.A.” He throws up the L.A. sign and grins at the camera. “I'm 21 years old and I've been training for three years.”
Why do you want to debut?
“Watching my idols on stage, I was always like, ‘wow they look so cool’, and then I started dancing myself and I was like, ‘wow I feel so cool’, so I wanted to become an idol aswell.”
What is your speciality?
“I can move my ears!” He wiggles them back and forth. “Was that kinda lame?” He watches the staff's reactions and laughs to himself.
☁️ Dowon’s Intro
“Hello, I am Yang Dowon! I am 21 years old and I was born and raised in Seoul. I've been training for nearly three years.”
Why do you want to debut?
“I love making music, rapping, performing… I don't think there's any other job I would do if not for music.” He grins bashfully, brushing through the back of his hair.
What is your speciality?
“Extraversion? Seriously I think people can’t not be friends with me,” He laughs with a cheeky glint in his eyes, “I'm just too loveable.” By now, the staff have seemingly given up on getting a decent answer to this question.
☁️ Taejoon's Intro
“Hello, I am Kim Taejoon, 20 years old, and I have lived in Seoul for almost my entire life.” He offers the camera a gracious smile. “I have been training for two years.”
Why do you want to debut?
“Well… I was always interested in idols, so I thought I'd try it out.” His lips purse in inquisition. “But the more I trained, the more I enjoyed singing and dancing, and I actually became dedicated.”
What is your speciality?
“Face?” He says with a straight face, pausing for three long seconds before giggling and perking up slightly, “looking pretty is the best right?"

Pocket Monsters EP 105: Yuzu Gym! Type Battle - 3 vs 3!
First of all, pardon for the wonky subs, this is the first time I am trying to do this. Merry Christmas, everyone!
I have the Amazon Prime JP account so I made my translation of Trovita Gym challenge’s episode based on that content. It includes the episode with both OP and EP, as well the “Who’s that pokemon?” segment and the next episode preview.

Translation Notes:
Kept the original names in this sub - Satoshi/Ash, Kasumi/Misty, Kenji/Tracey, Ookido/Oak, Musashi/Jessie, Kojirō/James, Nyarth/Meowth.
Rudy is named Ziggy - his sister Mahri is called Marie in the Japanese version. His home island Trovita is called Yuzu and his Shell Spike Badge is known as Triumphant Star Turban (Rinbō) Badge in Japanese.
Pikachu is Pikachu, Togepi is Togepi… Starmie is also Starmie in Japanese.
Meowth is Nyarth, Bulbasaur/Fushigidane, Squirtle/Zenigame, Charizard/Lizardon, Seel/Pawou, Staryu/Hitodeman, Electabuzz/Eleboo, Exeggcutor/Nassy. I kept the official romanization when possible.
Move game-wise, I tried to keep the ENG names, except for dengeki which can be translated as “electric shock” and apparently adapted in English as “Thunder Jolt” (it’s different from “Thunder shock”, denki shock, Pikachu’s signature move).
I don’t like translating oniichan/oneechan to “big bro/sis” but it’s kinda important aspect of Marie’s part in the episode (how much she wanted a sister, what a nice family the three of them could be together, Marie, Kasumi-oneechan and oniichan), so… yeah, I know many of you are not familiar with common Japanese/anime terms so I kept as that. At least these sound better than “older brother”/“older sister”…
Oh, Rudy’s famous lines to Ash at the end of the episode: サトシ、カスミさんを大事にしろよ。Please don’t complain about shipping goggles because “Satoshi, take good care of Kasumi-san” is the most neutral route - daiji ni suru could go either for “take care” to “treasure/cherish/regard Kasumi as someone very important”, alright.

Other random notes:
Ash is such a mega brat in this episode, I love the current merry nice kid from SM/PM seasons but I miss this damn loud-mouthed version lol.
Rudy is overall much nicer than the dub version. Okay, besides the fact he pretty much called Ash an “uncultured swine” lol, he was quite polite. Compared to my impression of years ago, rewatching this episode made me feel quite bad for him and his sister? (I like the conclusion from Dengeki Pikachu manga, Rudy literally becomes an older sister for Mahri…)
Random trivia, Rudy calls himself “The South Star of Southern Cross (constellation)”. It’s only mentioned once by the end of the episode, but lol oh well.
You may say that Ash was completely oblivious to the whole proposal dilemma during the episode (he was lol) but this is one of the episodes that makes Pokeshipping canon at least by Misty’s side.

september means thinking back abt daipa and the otp(tm) again and i just think it's interesting how in the series, they made a point to show that shinji's pkmn got along with satoshi's pkmn (for ex, eleboo and pikachu seemed to start being friendly in ep69 and greeted each other in ep81, the whole shinji's dodaitosu helping satoshi's hayashigame who had just evolved in ep100). shinji and satoshi themselves got along and had civil interactions with each other's brother figures (takeshi was kinda the big bro of the group and was one of the few characters who could get through shinji in a way, he talked to him in ep100 and even before... satoshi got along really well with reiji and everything, he was so happy to see him in ep128 ;_;).
anyway, i just think it's interesting to think about bc it really shows that what was going on between my boys was really on a personal level, and it took them many eps to finally reach and acknowledge each other and have a common understanding. their pkmn could get along, they could have good interactions with people in each other's lives and all of that happened before they could settle their differences between each other specifically. really neat to think about all these details tbh
anyway i luv that the otp really is that deep and they really did that for me specifically, thank u for your work i appreciate it

Episode 58 - Burn! Cinnabar Gym!
At long last, Ash has left the Kanto mainland and is making his way to Cinnabar. And in true Ash Ketchum style, he's skipping the proper sea route and trek through Seafoam Islands, and is instead beelining it on an ocean freighter.
Too bad, Ash. No Articuno for you. (Probably for the best. When I first caught Articuno, I got very confused and thought this was the golden Legendary Pokemon that Ash had seen in the first episode. Better for Ash himself to avoid that confusion.)
Unfortunately, the discovery of a recent hot springs has ruined Cinnabar. The Pokemon Lab is closed, as is the Gym. This means Blaine has to get his quiz show kick by running an inn and asking people things in person. Tragic.
Or so it seems, at least. But this just proves to be one of the riddles disguising entry into Blaine's Gym. I guess he got tired of Pokemon trivia and decided to move up to harder fare. Probably for the best, given that those Certification Test guys have cornered the market on obscure trivia questions.
Despite Misty proving quite talented at navigating Blaine's riddles, nobody actually solves the final challenge. Togepi accidentally throws a hidden switch and everyone dumbasses themselves inside. Bit disappointing, really, but we did just establish that Ash sucks at this sort of thing.
Gym Battle begins!
This will be a 3v3 match, beginning with Squirtle vs. Ninetales. Ash has the edge in Type Advantage, but Ninetales completely dominates Ash's unevolved Starter in base stats. Blaine gets off the first move and wraps Squirtle up in a Fire Spin - Which, as we've previously established, is hideously OP in Gen 1. Squirtle can't escape a G1 binding move from a superior foe and goes down hard.
We're on badge seven now. Ash can't rely solely on the Type Chart to win his battles, and that's bad for him because he was never even any good at that anyway.
For their second match, Ash calls Charizard. Not a bad choice, in theory. With Squirtle down, Charizard's resistance to Fire and access to some reasonably strong Normal moves can help push through. But Blaine isn't interested in abiding standard Gym specialization and picks Rhydon, which gets 4x advantage on Rock moves against Charizard.
Worse, Charizard plays the disobedient Pokemon card and refuses to fight anyway. Whoops.
With his back against a wall, Ash panics and throws in Pikachu. This is an even worse choice to fight Rhydon than Charizard, but Ash gets the "My Pikachu can damage Ground Types anyways just because" card again for some reason.
For his final Pokemon, Blaine brings out the hilariously named Boober, or Magmar as we know them in the U.S.
(Huh. Version rivals Electabuzz and Magmar are known in Japan as Eleboo and Boober. I wonder if there's something to that.)
This one ends on a cliffhanger. As Blaine's ace, Magmar's able to tank through Pikachu's attacks and delivers Blaine's signature TM: Fire Blast.
