urban fantasy never has been a very compelling setting to me idk. it can't (or in my experience doesn't ever) go as achingly real as literary/contemporary fiction (the death of vivek oji, ocean vuong's books, bloom into you), but it can't go as fully fantasy as proper high fantasy (malazan, this one MG series I remember loving... the Tapestry?, etc.) so it's like ehhh?
#my rambles#I'm sorry green bone saga objectively you were excellent urban fantasy just isn't rlly for me#I did finish and like baru 1 which was around the same 'area' of setting to it though so maybe time to revisit green bone saga#whole thing's just part of me preferring my fantasy to be like.#yk you're *fantasy*. throw everything on the wall and make everything weird what's the point of keeping things normal#so like for example I tend to dislike those types of fantasy books where it's like#'massive fantasy world with wizards everywhere. but our protag's just some guy who's good at swinging a sword'#yk? like you have *wizards* and you expect me to be interested in your lame guy with a sword? we have that irl!#(now that I think about it this may be why gtn wasn't rlly working for me)#baru doesn't fit into my head as fantasy so it sidesteps this#it's in some New Genre/setting w/ swbts + grace of kings + farseer trilogy#so like. alt world low magic genre fic with a focus on politicking?#I don't rlly have a snappy name for that a la lesbian space atrocities tho lol#considering whether to put captive prince on the list bc it fits the descriptor but also like.#tonally captive prince politicking is pretty different from baru politicking yk 💀#then again if we're talking tone depending on future books go tgok might have to be axed too#eh idk genres are finicky#books
