Okay so. I'm a little bit behind and I've only just binged the entirety of Sex Education. And let me tell you, I have Thoughts and Feelings about the Adam and Eric story! So pull up a chair bitches!

Adam is probably one of the most realistic characters in the show, and one of the most interesting. His arc begins in series one and is still in development.

Eric is beautiful and gives me life and I adore him, but not so much in those last few episodes of series 3. But at the same time, I can understand why it was done, in the interest of character arcs. But they still did my boy Adam dirty.

So these two in a relationship made complete and utter sense! The chemistry that they shared in series 1, even before any blow jobs were exchanged was brilliant, and you could tell that something was in the works for them. Adam is self-hating. It is a direct result of his father's parenting. Eric is open about his sexuality but suffers an extremely traumatic event which makes him withdraw into himself. It is a while before he can accept himself and love himself again, and when he does it is a beautiful thing.

Adam obviously has feelings for Eric but is in denial. That scene in the science lab, after the detention blow job? When they press their legs and then their pinky fingers together? Nothing short of perfection. It is at this moment that we know that it wasnt just a physical thing; that there are feelings involved.

It makes sense that Eric would start dating Rahim, especially because in comparison to Adam, Rahim actually has no qualms about holding Eric's hand in public, or kissing him in front of the corner shop. It makes sense that Eric wouldn't want to hide this most important part of himself after what he went through. I get it, okay. I get why Eric had to put himself first. Cal says much the same to Jackson: that they have been through a lot to accept themselves, and they can't be pushed back into that place by Jackson. Yes it's healthy, yes it's the right thing to do. But goddammit! The relationship between Eric and Adam has been teased since the first series! Eric's mum says that Rahim doesn't make Eric sparkle. Adam, says the dramatic narrative voice inside us all, does. They laugh at the same things; Eric can be himself around Adam; Adam might be scared of people knowing about his sexuality, but by God does he shine around Eric.

And Adam changes so so much for Eric and because of him. He crashes Romeo and Juliet to dramatically (and romantically) tell Eric that he wants to hold his hand. In front of the entire school! Eric doesn't want Adam reacting violently when he gets defensive, and Adam changes that too. Adam finds it hard to communicate, but he does it for Eric. He reads poetry for Eric. He WRITES poetry for Eric! He changes and he changes and he changes, and it's such a shame (although I get why they broke up) that Eric couldn't be a bit more patient and sympathetic about their relationship.

I just finished Sex Education and loved it but I made the mistake of reading the "effoff" (great ship name, well done all) tag and I was actually pummeled to death by the number of bad takes.

Yes, having yet another cheating plotline is a little boring. BUT. Connecting with his roots and culture and family is how Eric understands himself! That's established in season 1 baby! It makes perfect sense that after experiencing a vibrant Nigerian queer community Eric would second-guess his dopey, lovable, thumb of a white guy boyfriend. It does not make Eric a villain to me AT ALL, everybody on this show is dumb and messy, that's FINE.

PLUS this plotline now lets us enjoy Sad Adam, which it looks like Connor Swindells is gonna fucking nail. I still think Adam and Eric are gonna be endgame but I'm looking forward to seeing how they get there.

you didn't ask but i gotta say: i think what really pisses me off about the whole thing is that they made eric cheat twice and it's getting to a point where people consider it character trait

whilst i understand that eric wants to be out and proud - and it's something he totally deserves to do - i just hate that they had him cheat again 😭 like was that really necessary? there are other ways to have this conversation, @ writers room!!!

it feels even extra stupid when you consider that he cheated on rahim (who is so sure of who he is and did the absolute most for eric) to be with adam, and then they have eric cheat on adam and break up with him because he's not out/not gay enough for him??? like what do you want 🤡

no bc writing that i kinda realised how dumb i was to praise laurie the other week 😭 like it's so obvious she wants people to perceive eric a certain way but her actions prove otherwise, and this goes for multiple characters. as great as sex ed is you can kind of tell this is the showrunner's first show lol

also i honestly think they could've had him just break up with adam prior to nigeria, or maybe even break up when he thought adam was blanking him. or if they just.. didn't have effoff in s3 that would've been perfect

The thing that breaks my heart about their split was that he was really trying. He wanted to be a better communicator so he worked it out. He wanted to do better in school and he tried so hard. He said he wanted to change and he did. My boy even picked up reading poetry. He was willing to forget that Eric betrayed him, but even than wasn’t good enough. I can’t explain this connection I feel to Adam but he feels the most human to me. I think he is a perfect example of how people can change, but only if they want to. Adam really wanted to.

Adam: *said I love you first, is a bottom, lets Eric do his makeup when they’re alone and very clearly enjoys it, is actively working on communicating better with Eric abt his feelings, worked hard to befriend Otis for Eric, is consistently putting himself out of his comfort zone for Eric’s benefit despite the turmoil in his family life and internalized homophobia and self hatred, is writing a poem for his boyfriend, and then proceeds to FORGIVE HIM FOR CHEATING ON HIM AND BASICALLY APOLOGIZES FOR ‘CAUSING IT’ AND PROMISES TO TRY TO PUSH HIMSELF FURTHER OUT OF HIS COMFORT ZONE*

Eric: 🤩I’m breaking up with you and I’m ~saying~ it’s not your fault but I’m saying it’s because you’re not on my level of queerness yet (read: I’m better than you) which basically means I’m breaking up with you because there’s something wrong with you(so its ‘not your fault’ but it is because of you)! I know you’re out to the entire school and we kissed in front of your dad but you’re not out to your mom yet — I expected you to come out to everyone on the planet the day we started dating! and oh yeah, cheating on you with a stranger I’ll probably never see again on a 1 week vacation was more enjoyable for me than our tender and loving relationship and I’m going to heavily imply that cheating or as I like to call it my ~moment of freedom~ was a result of your shortcomings. I’m gonna just walk away now without any remorse or emotions on my face even though you’re clearly heartbroken and trying not to cry — oops you’re crying now sorry bye 🚴 toodles! 🤩
