Darling Bonnie’s Guidebook Anecdotes:
I grew up in a glossy walled bungalow in East Oakland in the 90s. I favored the ballet, colorful literature, interactive dolls who could perform some sort of trick, Sunday comics, poetry (writing & reading), songwriting, high tea parties, and staging theatrical presentations (one of which may or may not have involved a candle accidentally burning a neighbor girl’s ponytail), when not bike riding, rollerblading, & playing aggressively with the boys on my block.
Tumblr media
During those years, my step father was a facilities manager at Providian Financial but it was my mother, who was then just a secretary to the head partner of O’Melveny & Myers’s San Francisco, at the time located at 275 Battery, that put me onto L’Occtaine, which during that period had an outpost right near her office at 2 Embarcadero!
Tumblr media
I’d love drifting into that shop on random days with my mom to purchase little boxes of precious things, necessities really!  & when becoming an adult it became imperative to keep among my handbag essentials a tube of L’Occitane Shea Butter Handcream, often gifted to me by my mother, and thoroughly cemented into a mother daughter memory staple.
How I use it:
I treasure the process of usage, utilizing it with much joy + euphoria, massaging my hands post wash into a creamy texture as I connect back to memories of days gone by that remind me of the wild little eclectic child that I use to be, have always been, & always will be! ((*queue Babyface’s ‘Simple Day’s))
It’s items like this that keep me in tune with the fact that:
Memory lane’s mementos keep the spirit + energy of special period’s in one’s film of life alive & well!
My Advice:
If there is a L’Occitane Boutique near you, (*tip: they also live inside of Nordstrom’s now), drop in and browse! Among your purchases should be the Shea Butter Handcream that just may become for you a handbag must have. Or you may of course proceed to checkout now with an online purchase!
However you roll, just be sure that on your way to & from the boutique (be that digitally or physically) + upon application, you play my vintage record:
‘The Preview’ on repeat!
Appreciating it for the fempire on the rise mantra that it was created as + while getting inspired by my life’s trailer, reflect on what yours would look & feel like + state. Meditate on that. Following that get ready & stay tuned because there is so much more Darling Bonnie Land Magic Coming Soon!

Sunrise Ruffalo Channels Love of Things Into a Retail Project
Ruffalo, a former model and shop owner who is married to actor Mark Ruffalo, explains her love for the Callicoon community and craft artisans. By Leigh Nordstrom on May 19, 2017 “I had a woman once tell me, ‘You know, Sunrise, you’ll always get a second chance at your career, but you’ll never get a second chance with your children,’” Sunrise Ruffalo says over the phone on a recent morning, having driven back into Manhattan late the previous night. “And now is the right time for me to dive back into that world. Putting my creative energy into more places besides being a mother.” The 45-year-old former model and shop owner, who is married to actor Mark Ruffalo, is embracing that next step with a summer boutique in Callicoon, N.Y., called Sunny’s Callicoon Pop. The store, which opens June 1 and will operate through August, will be stocked with a selection of artisan items all hand-selected by Ruffalo over many years. “I always knew I’d sort of find my way to retail — it’s where I find my joy: being surrounded by beautiful things,” says Ruffalo, who owned a store called Kaviar and Kind in Los Angeles 10 years ago. “There are things that people can find scary or sad that I find quite beautiful. I can appreciate a cobweb.” The mother of three is a natural explorer, and has culminated a collection of curiosities for the boutique. “I meet people and wander into studios and little nooks and crannies in different little towns that I visit, and I’ve just discovered so many different people,” she says. “I really am drawn to an artist. There’s something vulnerable about them at times, and at times innocent, and maybe a little damaged even. But it’s that vulnerability I think that I’m drawn to, and that I find beautiful. Being around that creativity feeds me. [The pop-up is] a collection of things from people in my life that have just titillated me along the way.” The key to her selection is a personal love, she stresses. “I wouldn’t put one thing in my store that I wouldn’t want for myself. I have to love things — and I do have enough love in my heart for a lot of things. My taste is pretty wide-ranging and eclectic, but I also know how to bring everything together so it’s cohesive.” Goods stocked include hostess gifts, things like pumice stones, art, antique furniture and ceramics; games like dominoes and dart boards, and clothing pieces by Gary Graham, part of a custom collection he did for Ruffalo called the Ophelia collection. “I have to be honest, my ceramists right now are blowing my mind,” Ruffalo says of a favorite artisan she carries. “I’m working with a young girl named Bridget Ann Clark, who is based in Kentucky. I met her when she was a young shop girl in Manhattan. [Another one is] Kelly Cain — a timid little thing, she lives in the middle of the Catskills in the most incredible home I’ve ever seen, and makes beautiful day-to-day stoneware.” The Ruffalos have been homeowners in upstate New York since 1999. “Mark and I met in ’97, so we pretty much bought a home there right away,” she says. “We were young, Mark was doing theater, we had no money. Mark’s from Wisconsin, I’m from New Orleans, we both grew up around a lot of trees — mine were big oak trees, his were more like forests.” When their kids were young, they abandoned L.A. to live in Callicoon full-time. “When we lived up there, Michelle Williams came to visit us and ended up buying a house up there. Matilda [Williams’ daughter] and our kids all went to the Montessori school.” The initial appeal of Callicoon was the affordability, but they’ve stayed for the community. “I’ve traveled all around the world — by the time I was 18 I’d been around the world three times — and when I got to Callicoon it ticked off all the boxes for me,” Ruffalo says. “The community of people — people mean a lot to me. If you want to get there, you have to really want to get there — there’s no train, it definitely keeps it very pristine. It’s a more primal way to live, which is to enjoy, I guess. To be enjoyed. To be looking for joy, to be attune with nature.” Link to online article with photos: http://wwd.com/eye/lifestyle/sunrise-ruffalo-retail-project-calliccoon-new-york-10890393/

15 Inspiring Examples of Small Business Branding
Tumblr media
Taking on a branding project for a small business can be a valuable opportunity for agencies and freelancers to develop experimental creative work without the intense pressures and restrictions associated with larger accounts.
While big businesses often have multiple decision makers with very specific ideas and guidelines to keep their existing brands consistent, smaller companies are usually more open to exploring new creative directions, and can move faster to implement them.
If you need some more convincing that working with small businesses can result in some stunning creative work, we've put together a list of 15 small business branding examples to get you inspired for your next project.
15 Examples of Small Business Branding
1) Elo Soap
When traditional Greek soap manufacturer Elo needed a fresh look for their new Greek god-inspired line of olive oil soaps, they turned to designer Mike Karolos at Smirap Designs to create something that would stand out in a sea of touristy Greek gift shop items.
"The biggest goal was to be different, unique, and eye catching," Karolos said in an interview with The Dieline. "Although the Greek god theme in tourist shops here in Greece is very common, by using my illustration signature style we managed to give a different take on an overused theme. The result was a modern, fresh, and at the same time kind of traditional packaging due to the theme we chose."

2) AND UNION
These craft beer cans from German brewery AND UNION balance minimal design with a complex, unexpected texture. The team at AND UNION designed the unique cans in-house with the goal of breaking through the idea that only cheap beers come in cans.
"There is still that stigma, even though many craft brewers before us have done such a great job in educating the consumer, we want to do our bit too," co-founder Rui Esteves said. "We wanted to create a can that you hesitate to throw away after you’ve had the beer. I end up leaving stacks of these empty cans in my kitchen because I feel bad throwing such a beautiful thing in the recycling."

3) Folklorious
Barcelona-based designer Quim Marin developed this stunning branding for online accessories boutique Folklorious. Marin incorporated excerpts of classic artwork, illustrated design, and photography with modern graphic elements and typography. The end result is an eclectic, stylish, and truly unique brand identity.

4) EAT MY SHORTS!
EAT MY SHORTS! (Yes, that's an intentional Simpson's reference) is an independent, gender-neutral clothing line by fashion designer Malena Blas, who worked with Mexico City-based designer Tomás Salazar to create a contemporary brand identity and packaging solution.
The company's shirts are packaged in pastel-colored metallic pouches with no reference to gender, and the trendy cotton candy hues are used throughout the brand's promotional materials.

5) Zonzo Estate
Swear Words, an Australian design firm, was tasked with creating a sophisticated, energetic rebrand for Zonzo Estate, a winery, restaurant, and popular wedding destination in Melbourne's Yarra Valley.
The redesign is surprisingly modernistic for a rustic winery. The work is centered around a versatile, floating-letter logo that looks classic in gold foil, and youthful and fresh when printed in outline on a menu cover.

6) Qoñi
This small artisan community in Peru was branded head-to-toe by Leo Burnett Design, the design department of Leo Burnett's Canadian branch.
"We created the brand’s identity from top to bottom, giving it a name, wordmark, brand story, lookbook, promotional material, and retail tags," the Leo Burnett team writes on their website. "Qoñi, meaning warmth in the region's native language, was perfectly suited to the brand’s line of cozy alpaca goods."

7) Lune Croissanterie
Lune is a futuristic bakery with a serious, scientific commitment to perfecting their signature pastry. It makes sense then that their branding -- developed by Melbourne-based agency A Friend of Mine -- combines science and baked goods in the form of a croissant-tailed spaceship logo.
"The packaging we designed features diecut 'hyperdrive' ventilation slots in a galactic theme (taking cue from the name Lune) which acted as ventilation for the pastries, paired with a subtle glitter print for a further cosmic touch," writes the team from A Friend of Mine on their website. "We also redesigned their much loved rocket motif, and we couldn't resist adding a little croissant in our update."

8) Tenth Muse Botanical Fragrance
Thanks to Studio MPLS, this botanical fragarance startup has a charming, Victorian-inspired brand identity that still manages to look modern. Tenth Muse creates custom perfumes from natural, sustainably sourced ingredients, and their packaging and promotional materials elegantly "combine[s] clarity and beauty with intrigue and mystery."

9) Bombay Electric
Bombay Electric is a upscale fashion select store located in Mumbai, and their vibrant, kaleidoscopic new branding was created by Paris-based designer Michael Thorsby.
"When approaching the work to put a new image on the company I knew that there was no way around colors and vibrancy," Michael writes of the project on his portfolio website. "Framed by a rather minimal typography and grid, the intense color gradients are drawn to look like blurry abstract photographs, as if taken inside an Ann Veronica Janssens installation."

10) Glorioso Super Nutrients
These seed packet-inspired supplement packages from Spanish superfood company Glorioso Super Nutrients are simple but delightfully whimsical, each featuring an abstract circle motif representative of their contents.
Glorioso's entire brand identity, which includes a range of colorful business cards, was developed by Barcelona-based agency Requena. The circle motifs are used throughout the brand's website and other promotional materials.

11) Notel
This decidedly unconventional hotel demanded some especially bold branding choices, and agency Self Titled definitely delivered. Notel consists of six reconditioned Air Stream trailers parked on a roof, and Self Titled was brought in to provide art direction and develop a strong brand concept for the entire operation.
As the agency explains on their website: "The name and logo explicitly express the idea that this is ‘not a hotel’, with a subtle nod to the slashed 'no symbol'. Celebrating the best of Melbourne, reframing both high and low culture, Self-titled created the brand positioning -- 'reflecting and reframing Melbourne'. This helped inform the reflective surfaces, cut-out logo and a website design which reveals and reframes layers of content."

12) Marte Estudio
Classical art, bright colors, and modern design elements come together in the branding for this Mexican hair and makeup studio. Created by design agency Bienal, the eclectic physical space and promotional elements were developed to reflect the bold, vibrant personality of Marte Estudio's creator, Mariana Abraham.

13) Robinson's
When you think of an auto body workshop, great branding probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. But thanks to agency Parallax, Robinson's Accident Repair Center has a sleek, retro-inspired logo, minimal branded materials, and interiors to match.

14) Sneaky Veg
Mandy Mazliah created her blog Sneaky Veg to chronicle her family's experiences eating healthy food. When she needed some clever, stand-out branding for the blog, designer Vicki Turner cooked up these designs.
"I was asked to create Sneaky Veg's brand identity that captured the sneaky yet good intentioned methods of making wholesome fruit and veg recipes into firm kid favourites," said Turner on her website.

15) Doctor Manzana
Doctor Manzana is a technical support shop for smart phones and tablets located in Valencia, Spain. They wanted a way to attract a new audience for their services and products, so they reached out to the folks at Masquespacio Design to create a new brand identity.
The Masquespacio team explains on their website: "A brand was designed to attract different kind of customers from fashionistas to geeks, traduced here into several kinds of colors through a brand image that plays continually with the angle of 54 degrees formed by the reflection of the mobile phones' screen."

Those looking for the feel of an authentic European-style holiday market don't necessarily need to travel beyond the Midpeninsula. The region is home to a growing number of  holiday pop-up markets, each with its own cultural flair and one-of-kind handcrafted items.
Looking for handcarved nutcrackers from Germany? Head to downtown Mountain View's German market, where you might even encounter the mythical Krampus roaming the outdoor vendor booths looking for children who have misbehaved. Craving Parisian breads or looking for handmade scented soaps? The French market in Palo Alto includes an array of imported foods and crafts from the City of Lights. And those looking for the opportunity to learn a Russian jig while browsing booths for gift items will likely find an opportunity at the Waldorf School of the Peninsula Annual Holiday Faire in Los Altos.
From the music, specialty foods and children's activities to the imported handicrafts and one-of-a-kind items from local artisans, these pop-up markets provide shoppers more than a place to find unique gifts — they provide a chance to participate in the holiday joys of giving with proceeds from many of them benefitting various local nonprofits.
"People enjoy the festive atmosphere; it puts them in the holiday spirit," said Fanny Retsek, director of the Palo Alto Art Center Studio, which holds a ceramics and jewelry sale during the holiday season. Proceeds from the event benefit the nonprofit's programs. "People can pick up the work, hold it or try it on to see how it looks. (It's) not like buying something online where you don't really know what it will be like when it arrives."
According to the organizers of these European-style fairs, there's a sense of belonging and inclusion that comes from attending the markets.
"In a postmodern society that has always been a melting pot, people seek authenticity," said Father Andrew Smith of Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church in Menlo Park, which hosts the annual Russian Christmas Bazaar. "They might not have an idea of what their own authenticity is, and I think it's comforting and nostalgic to find that somewhere else."
Elisabeth Michel, who organizes The French Fair, believes culturally focused fairs serve as an introduction to a particular country's customs and a meeting place for native transplants. The fair, she explained, started 15 years ago as a way for the French community to celebrate and support French products and locally owned French businesses. Over the years, it's grown well beyond the French community, she said
"For American people or non-French people ... there's an attraction to ... seeing something different," Michel said. "We want to make people feel as if they were in France for a day."
Susan O'Sullivan, director of development and external relations at Filoli in Woodside, believes people come to the historic estate's annual European-influenced holiday market for another reason — to find gifts that are difficult to find elsewhere.
"I think online shopping with the big retailers makes it easy to find items that are widely available, but many folks really try to seek out things that are locally made or artisan made and unique."
Here's a list of some of the pop-up markets scheduled to take place along the Midpeninsula this holiday season:
The French Fair — A Day in France
Launched by a small group of French residents living in southern California 15 years ago, The French Fair has found a growing following in Palo Alto, where it has been held over the past six years. According to organizers, the fair has become the largest Bay Area event devoted to French culture, food and fashion. This year's holiday fair includes more than 60 vendors selling handmade items and European imports; two French singers; children's activities; a fashion show; a French car exhibition; and French imported foods — charcuterie, baguette sandwiches, pastries, cheese — from Sunnyvale's Frenchery market, which imports and delivers hard-to-find food items directly from France.
Where: Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16. Cost: Free. A portion of the event's proceeds benefit Mentor Tutor Connection, a nonprofit program launched by the Los Altos Rotary Club in 1996 to provide classroom tutors and mentors at Mountain View and Los Altos schools. Info: frenchfair.org
Filoli Artisan Market
Visitors can take a stroll back in time to experience the historic Filoli estate decorated as it would have been when the Bourn and Roth families occupied the space between 1917 and 1975. As part of Holidays at Filoli festivities, in which the house and gardens are adorned to reflect the season, Filoli hosts its annual five-day Filoli Artisan Market with a festive French feel. This year's market will include 20 artisans who will be selling soaps, hand-turned wood bowls, jewelry, ornaments, glass items, fine art, notecards and more. Food gift items also will be available for purchase from vendors, including Bert's Bites and Woodside Bakery. Additionally, Filoli's newly developed hard cider — made with apples from the property's orchard — as well as its honey, vinegars and teas will be available for purchase.
Where: Filoli Visitor Center, 86 Canada Road, Woodside.
When: 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday - Sunday, Nov. 23-24 & Friday - Sunday, Nov. 29-30, Dec. 1.
Cost: $25 adult, $12 children 5-17 (includes admission to Filoli house and gardens.); $35 adult, $18 children 5-17 for evening market, which includes illuminated grounds and holiday-themed entertainment. Proceeds benefit the historic, nonprofit property.

Waldorf School of the Peninsula Annual Holiday Faire
More of a holiday event with items for sale than a vendor-focused bazaar, the Annual Holiday Faire is a community-centered, activity-focused day of fun for students, their families and members of the community. Curated items for sale include wooden puzzles and toys, wreaths, locally made bath and body-care items, shawls, jewelry and handmade items crafted by parents. Activities are ticket-based and include beeswax candle dipping, wreath making, hair braiding and face painting. Pocket fairies roam the grounds, musicians perform traditional Russian jigs. Puppet shows and storytelling areas keep children entertained. There is also a gnome adventure crawlspace for kids and holiday trees are placed throughout the winter wonderland-themed event. Additionally, Ce Patli, a food truck focused on organic, non-GMO Mexican cuisine will be onsite and hot chocolate and horchata are available for purchase.
Where: Waldorf School of the Peninsula, 11311 Mora Drive, Los Altos. Shuttle available from Antiochian Orthodox Church of the Redeemer, 380 Magdalena Ave, Los Altos.
When: 6 - 9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6 (adults-only boutique); 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7, (all ages — boutique and activities).
Cost: Free. Proceeds benefit the school.

The Art Center Ceramics and Jewelry Sale
Jewelry artist Barbara Carman initiated the idea for the annual Palo Alto Art Center Ceramics and Jewelry Sale four years ago as a way for the studio artists to show and sell their work, as well as to showcase the caliber of artwork being created at the nonprofit center — managed by the City of Palo Alto — which is open to the public for art activities of all ages. The sale provides an opportunity to purchase unique, handmade, high-quality gifts and objects ranging from functional plates, bowls, platters and mugs to sculptures and jewelry made of precious metals and stones designed and fabricated by the 46 professional artist vendors. The Art Center Gallery also is open during the event.
Where: Palo Alto Art Center,1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto.
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7
Cost: Free. Proceeds benefit the participating artists, the studios and the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation.

Annual Christmas Market at Allied Arts Guild
Menlo Park's landmark Allied Arts Guild, which for decades has housed shops and artist studios in its 1920s-era Spanish-style buildings, hosts an annual Christmas Market that includes an eclectic mix of artisans selling everything from spices, Peruvian crafts and handsewn items to wool and knitted goods, jewelry, mosaic art, linen items, leather and wood gifts, natural soaps and lip balms and locally made toffee spaced throughout its 3.5 acres of gardens. Entertainment includes a visit from Santa, carolers and live music throughout the day. Guests are encouraged to make lunch reservations at Cafe Wisteria, (650-838-9002). As part of the festivities, some shops give out small gifts and treats to visitors, others hold drawings.
Where: Allied Arts Guild, 75 Arbor Road, Menlo Park.
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7
Cost: Free. Proceeds support the Packard Children's Hospital.
Info: alliedartsguild.org
Russian Christmas Bazaar
For more than 50 years, Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church in Menlo Park has brought a little bit of the Russian tradition to the holiday shopping season. This one-day event contains a rummage sale, two local artists selling artwork, church tours and honey from the Holy Assumption Orthodox Monastery in Calistoga. Live Russian music and a Russian puppet show will keep visitors entertained while they dine, a la carte, on traditional Russian cuisine handmade from recipes passed on from generation to generation, including cabbage rolls, piroshki, borscht and a variety of sweet desserts. In addition to the food, one of the biggest draws to the bazaar is its "Lucky Barrel," where for $2, guests can purchase a wrapped children's or adult gift without knowledge of what's under the paper.
Where: Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Churchm 1220 Crane St., Menlo  Park.
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7
Cost: Free. Donations accepted.  Proceeds benefit the parish's religious sisterhood of nuns.

German Holiday Market
In every village, town and city in Germany, an open-air Christmas market, Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlmarkt, is held every holiday season. In 2013, the German International School of Silicon Valley (GISSV) developed the German Holiday Market in downtown Mountain View to bring the German cultural tradition to the Bay Area. In striving for an authentic experience, GISSV places wood facades on booths to create a village atmosphere representing those found in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and sells German food and sweets, as well as holiday market hallmarks, such as Gluhwein (warm mulled wine) and Kinderpunsch (hot cider). Only vendors offering handcrafted goods or items imported from Germany and other parts of Europe are chosen to participate in the fair. "It's an authentic German Christmas market which you (typically) can't find here in the Bay Area," said vendor Dennis Olarte, who helps his wife, Conny, sell her handmade, natural soaps called Essence of O.
"It's so much fun. You have the Christmas lights, you have the food, you have the drinks, you have the cookies and pretzels they serve in Germany, and you can't find that anywhere."
Where: Mountain View City Hall Plaza, 500 Castro St., Mountain View.
When: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14.
Cost: Free. Proceeds from the event benefit the German International School of Silicon Valley.
