Eastern Yellowjacket I had just rescued it from the uncovered hummingbird feeder. While it was drying off, I was able to get a “super” macro (2:1 ratio) of it. This is the 42nd installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on the same day as the previous post while working for on my Iowa hitch with @americanconservationexperience, I found one of the pollinators calico aster pollinators mentioned previously, an eastern yellowjacket (Vespula maculifrons). These eusocial wasps build their nests underground that can contain 100s, if not 1000s, of individuals. They are infamous because they will also make residence in buildings, but what makes them feared is their painful sting. They can also be irritating due to their love of sugar. However, what is overlooked is that they are predators of insects regarded as agricultural pests.
