Sonic Free Riders (2010) Story Review

Disclaimer: I will be judging this game by the plot and writing, not the gameplay.

Introduction

Greetings, mortals! For today's review, we'll be looking at the third and final installment of the Riders trilogy, Sonic Free Riders.

This is part of a series of reviews in which I’ll be going into slightly more detail about my thoughts on various Sonic game storylines, and why I think they're either well written and engaging, or an absolute trainwreck (or somewhere in-between). I’ll be giving my stance on the character portrayals, visuals, soundtracks, voice actors, and what themes/messages they had to offer. Keep in mind that these are just my own personal thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree, feel free to share your own thoughts and opinions!

Anyway, let us begin! ^^

Plot

Dr. Eggman announces a second World Grand Prix and promises vast riches to the winners, while secretly planning to gather data from the racers to program into his robots.

Characters

This game, along with Colors, was the beginning of the flanderization of the cast. Like the Rivals duology and Lost World, most of the conflict between characters feels forced. And while it is somewhat understandable in this case, it still feels like they’re being jerks for the sake of it. It really says something when Omochao is considered to be the least annoying character in the whole story.

Team Sonic is perhaps the least annoying out of the four teams, but Sonic and Knuckles still kind of behave like stereotypical high school jocks in this game. Tails on the other hand, is just as humble and kind as ever. He's one of the few likable characters in Free Riders besides Cream and (dare I say it) Omochao.

Amy was at her absolute WORST in Free Riders. Mean-spirited, obsessed with Sonic, blames others, and is prone to violent outbursts. She also behaves perpetually rudely and obnoxiously to her teammates, compared to the high spirited if temperamental leader she was in Heroes. And I HATED that scene where she calls Cream a "useless kid". That is so out of character for her. That would be like if Sonic dumped Tails, and Cream is Amy's Tails. I can tolerate flanderized Amy to a certain degree, but not the one who called Cream a "useless kid".

Vector talking about money like this doesn't seem too out of character for him, but I wonder... Does Vector still have to pay the rent like in Sonic Heroes? Did he forget? Or was that whole thing just dropped? Idk... Also, why is Vector on Team Rose? HE HAS TEAM CHAOTIX!!!!

As always, Cream is extremely adorable and must be protected. She's the nicest character in the whole game, and as such, she's one of the few likable characters in this game besides Tails and Omochao (depending on your view).

Shadow and Rouge were originally nice, selfless people who meant well, but here, they're both callous and mean-spirited, especially regarding to their mistreatment of E-10000B compared to their usual teamwork with E-123 Omega. Poor Omega, they replaced him with an Egg Pawn wearing a hat... :(

Sadly, not even the Babylon Rogues were safe from this game's rampant character assassination. Storm has been downgraded to a dumb goon, to the point where he's just Boom Knuckles with an accent. Wave has regressed to the way she was in the first game: she cheated again and she's back to being spiteful towards Tails. Jet is way more pompous than in the other games, although I do like him wanting a rematch with Sonic after his ill-gotten win. There's honor in that. Unlike the first two games, there's NO sense of positive camaraderie among these three. They argue with each other ALL THE TIME, and not in a good way like before. They're just angry and hostile towards each other all the way around. It's not even funny or entertaining to watch like in the first two games, it's just uncomfortable... This is the most dysfunctional they have EVER been. I know the Babylon Rogues aren't the closest of friends, but they understand each other, and this game treated them like dirt and then tossed them aside as soon as the Meta Era began. So much for their character development.

Visuals

These cutscenes are so half assed and lazy, it's a stretch to even call these "cutscenes". The entire game is basically just a PowerPoint presentation. Because apparently, a bunch of still images changing with every line of dialogue can be considered a "cutscene". I would expect something like this in one of the handheld Sonic games, like Sonic Rush or Sonic Rivals, because PowerPoint style cutscenes in those type of games still give you a sense of context to the adventure, while leaving enough room to focus on the rest of the game. It makes sense in the Storybook series because it, well, makes the game closer to a storybook. Here, this is just laziness. Sonic Free Riders is like watching paint dry, and the mean-spirited tone of the story and its characters REALLY doesn't help matters.

Soundtrack

The main theme, Free, is a great song, and possibly the only good thing about Free Riders besides the opening CG cutscene.

Voice Acting

Sonic Free Riders was the first game to use the Studiopolis voice cast, predating Sonic Colors by eleven days. Most of the voice actors did a decent job, but some of them, like Cindy Robinson (Amy) and Kirk Thornton (Shadow), will get on your nerves very quickly. Michael Yurchak's portrayal as Jet is very atrocious. Instead of sounding like a teenager, he made Jet sound like a little kid. Kate Higgins voices both Tails and Wave in this game, and while she does a great job voicing Tails, her portrayal as Wave sounds much higher pitched than Bella Hudson's portrayal of her in the first two Riders games. Well, at least the Knuckles/Storm parallel was kept, as both characters were voiced by Travis Willingham.

Theme/Message

I don't think Free Riders really has a central theme to be honest. Like the Meta Era games, Free Riders is so shallow and lazy, it’s like a game for stupid kids.

Conclusion

Wow... Nice job SEGA, you did great on the first two Sonic Riders games, and then it ends like this. I will forever hate Sonic Free Riders for boring me to death and for singlehandedly killing the Sonic Riders series in more ways than one. The game's story, if you can even call it that, doesn't even follow-up on possible plot hooks presented by Zero Gravity's ending. Not to mention it horribly butchers a number of the characters, especially Amy, Shadow, and Rouge. What I find particularly impressive about Free Riders is that it somehow manages to be both boring and annoying at the same time. So, just to recap: The first Sonic Riders introduced us to some new cool characters and gave us a good story, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity gave us an awesome story that arguably surpasses the original, and Sonic Free Riders just gave us a PowerPoint presentation that frankly has more in common with Team Sonic Racing than the first two Riders games... Come on SEGA, you can do better than that.
