Hermione could feel the blush creeping its way up her cheeks. That all-too-familiar sense of this-is-so-wrong-its-right bubbled up from her chest, and she had to keep herself from letting it escape. Draco Malfoy had been many things in his memory, but the man standing before her put every previous iteration of himself in her mind to shame.

And he stood there, hands in his pockets, looking at her with a mixture of encouragement and grief evident in his eyes. Encouragement for her first day at a new job in a new life, and grief at the knowledge that she wasn’t who he’d fallen in love with. Who he’d planned a future with. Who he most likely kissed goodbye every morning after walking her to her office because this Draco Malfoy was very much that kind of man.

“I’ll see you at lunch,” Draco said, breaking eye contact all too soon. “Good luck.”

Somewhere past the daisies and treetops was a life in which Hermione didn’t have half of what she’d stumbled upon. Lightyears away, perhaps, there was a girl who spent most of her nights staring at the front door and wondering where exactly she’d gone wrong. That girl could never have dreamed up life in an estate with more than enough clothes and books and space than she knew what to do with.

And yet, there she was, standing at the precipice of it all. Looking over an expansive landscape as if she could find answers hidden among the blades of grass while a man she’d only ever known as a stranger watched her every move. Not only watched her every move but seemed to follow each dart of her eyes and flash of realization that came across her face.
