In October 2014, the Draken Harald Hårfagre (a viking longship replica) suffered a broken mast. Here you can see the lower part, the upper part has been washed away. But to break it up straight away, the crew were able to moor the part and had informed the coastguard, who came to their aid a little later.

Shadowy Shore: 2, 3, 4, 14
2: What scene did you first put down?
I sincerely do not remember the first thing I wrote for Shadowy Shore.
Okay I checked and the earliest notes are from October 2019 and it is the first chapter because I'm boring and write things in order. But the image of them arriving at Pyke on a dark and stormy night to meet Yara/Asha felt like a great way to kick off a new adventure.
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
"Why was Theon’s love insufficient to make him happy?"
I had it as this very blunt declaratory line right on the brink of Jon leaving because I think, in this moment, it's even occurring to Theon for the first time that this question is the root of his anger. Theon has selfish tendencies, even in this different stage of his maturity and character arc. Deep down, he will always wish that Jon would be satisfied by him and him alone and not have needs or desires that do not include him. He does not sympathize with the fact that Jon has an internal world that does not always include him. And trusting that Jon will indeed return to him after confronting these other issues that Theon cannot control, learning that he cannot control Jon, is probably the most important element of his arc in the work.
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
"I am my parents' child after all; half whore, half madman."
Jon being a little bit of a drama queen, but it's heavy news to receive after destroying what little reputation you had that you are the secret lost prince of the realm. And I imagine Jon, upon learning his parentage, will have some anger toward his parents, initially. Whether it was foolish love or abduction, coercion or prophecy, his parents made hugely questionable decisions that resulted in ruin. Not knowing why they did what they did will haunt him.
I also like the idea of Jon being concerned about his sanity after learning that his true father (supposedly) was going mad and his grandfather famously lost his mind to paranoia and violence. So much of his life is lies and uncertainty already. Not knowing what to trust and what is true must be a constant worry.
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
No? I'm not sure what this question is asking, really. Like if the fic has a moral? Or a theme? I guess the theme is: "sometimes a family can be two boyfriends, their feral mute son, and one boyfriend's wife, and I think that's beautiful."
Edit: So upon speaking to my girlfriend it turns out that she interpreted the question to mean, “what is a fun fact you learned while researching the subject matter of this fic” which, holy shit, what a move, babe.
Something that was exciting to piece together was the ironborn’s very mishmashed naval technology. Though they’re obviously heavily based on Vikings and described as having longships, their vessels also have multiple decks and cabins, like a trireme or a bireme, and some like huge galleons.  Watched a lot of footage of the Draken Harald Hårfagre voyage, where 33 maniacs sailed a reconstructed Viking longship from Haugesund, Norway all the way to goddamn L'Anse aux Meadows with only oars and sail. A regular shift for a Norse sailor was apparently four hours of sleep to four hours of work.

On December 16th in 1263 King Håkon IV of Norway, died in the Bishop’s Palace, Kirkwall, Orkney.
In 1262 The Scottish King Alexander III sponsored Scottish nobles that raided the Hebrides. In 1263 Håkon responded by sending a formidable “leiðangr”, a war fleet, of at least 120 ships and many men to Scotland.
There were negotiations between Alexander and Håkon, but these were purposely prolonged by the Scots. Finally there was a clash between a smaller Norwegian force and a Scottish division at Largs on the West Coast of Scotland. The battle was fought under a terrible storm.
Håkon had to retreat, and he sailed to the Orkneys where he died. The following year his large ship Kristsuden sailed the dead king home to Bergen.
The pics show  Haakon's seal, from a 1247/48 letter his Coat of Arms and the Draken Harald Hårfagre a recreation of one the great ships mentioned in the Norse Sagas, and similar to the one that would have taken the Norse King home.

The 1st Adventure: Yesterday I had the joy and excitement of boarding the Viking ship that I have been admiring for the past several months as it was undergoing repairs. Finally I was on the Draken Harald Hårfagre, the world’s largest Viking sailing ship at this current time. For a short time longer they are giving tours at certain hours. https://www.mysticseaport.org/news/2017/viking-longship-to…

The Viking longship Draken at Mystic Seaport, Mystic Connecticut. From the Seaport site, “Draken Harald Hårfagre is a clinker-built Viking longship, a reconstruction of what the Norse Sagas refer to as a “Great Ship.”

where's this kol dance number i need it read that like NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s part of the LONG-ass series I finished a while back. If you want to read just the hijacking/dance number part, you can go to this fic, and scroll down till you reach the line ‘Her name is Draken Harald Hårfagre, and she’s magnificent.‘ It’s just a bit before the halfway mark.
The ship, btw, is based on a real reproduction Viking ship that was built a few years back and really sails around Scandinavia. Kol and his boyfriend steal it during a European jaunt and crash it into Ireland.

I’m not kidding! Scandinavian Vikings are rediscovering America by sea as they did thousands of years ago. The Draken, a Viking ship named Harald Hårfagre after the first Viking King of Norway Harold Fair Hair, was in Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend.  The ship was open to tours in the harbor where she docked – right next to the Independence Seaport Museum on the Delaware River.
This ship isn’t a replica of an existing vessel but a recreation of a thousand-plus-year-old longship based on the study of Viking history and Norse sagas.  They used historical data while still creating a seaworthy ship.
During the Expedition America East Coast Tour in 2018, Draken crossed the Atlantic Ocean arriving first in Mystic, Connecticut, the home of a fascinating Seaport museum. The Draken is visiting fourteen cities along the East Coast.  Many stops have already been completed. Upcoming ports include Norfolk, Virginia from September 27-30; Washington D.C. from October 5-15; and in late October, the ship returns to Mystic, Connecticut.
Tour guides, from a multi-nation group of enthusiastic sailors, showed us around the ship and demonstrated how the wooden top deck could be removed plank by plank.  The deck has overlapping planks and rivets and uses tar and hemp fibers which are historically accurate.
They explained how a true longship would not have awnings. Vikings were hardcore and would sleep in leather tents or out in the open. The crew onboard this ship is much smaller, about forty people. The Vikings would have had up to a hundred. They needed rowers to battle the waves and move swiftly.
Planning the ship began in 2008 with the support of Sigurd Aase, a Norwegian modern-day Viking entrepreneur. The ship’s home port is in Haugesund, Norway. Her maiden voyage was across the North Sea to the British Isles – a frequent stomping ground in the past.  Vikings sailed all over the world, not just to Greenland, long before Christopher Columbus. The Draken made her 2016 Expedition America crossing with a small crew of 32 sailors.
The ship has two statues of ravens on board.  They are named Huginn ‘thought’ and Muninn ‘memory’ after the pets of the Norse one-eyed God named Odin. An early form of service animals, this pair of seeing-eye birds flew all over the world to bring him information.
Vikings brought ravens along for help with navigation. The Mariners would release the birds from their cages, and if they didn’t return they had successfully found land. If they returned, the Viking sailors studied the stars and crystals some more and kept rowing.  The three-triangle carved sign below the ravens is a sign for Valhalla (enlarged below); an enormous hall ruled over by Odin.
I’m not sure if the Vikings named or had toilets onboard, but on this ship, they do. Those Norwegians sure have a sense of humor. The small one is named Denmark and the other Sweden! Both were made by the Swedish company IKEA.
For those who want more techie details, the ship is square sailed, 115-foot long, a 26-foot beam, and a 79-foot mast. Top speed under sail is 14 knots. She has engines but can go green instead by relying on the raw historic rowing power of one hundred oarsmen. I’d love to see that in action from a helicopter!
For more details on ports of call and dates, check their website: Stopover Schedule  Their Facebook page has a great video showing the ship at sea riding the waves. Wild! The Draken’s FB Page
My novel Aquavit doesn’t include a Viking boat but is named for a liquor the Vikings drank when they weren’t busy rowing. [amazon_link asins=’1521210519,0452346746′ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’karenstensg01-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’262ed779-c428-11e8-a7cc-839cd167ab55′]
