During the last week of July, the city of Omuta hosts the famous Daijiyama dragon festival with more than a dozen dragon floats. From what I’ve pieced together, local legend holds that there was once a battle between a dragonsnake and a crab on nearby Mt Miike. The crab defeated the dragon, creating 3 (healing?) ponds, of which one still exists today. During this festival, people are held up to the mouth of the dragons, which is believed to bring protection from illness. People say I am the luckiest person they know, and sometimes I am, but there are specific circumstances that go into my luck. This fire dragon photo is a perfect example of me making my own luck. I was in Hong Kong for one night and when I landed I stopped at the Hong Kong tourist information booth to ask what special event was going on that night. The guy suggested a shopping area, and food area both of which I knew about. I said no that I was looking for something special that doesn’t happen all the time. That’s when he told me about the fire dragon festival which would be happening that night. He said it only happens once a year and tonight was the night. I got the times and directions and went to the park with my camera. When I got off the train I didn’t know where to go, but saw a man with a camera and asked him if he was going to the festival, he was. This stranger got me into the park and explained what was going to happen so I could be ready to photograph the dragon. Was I lucky? Yes, I was lucky to be there on that exact night, but I was only lucky because I asked.
