Nintendo was the creator of the D-pad. It was made by Gunpei Yokoi for the Game & Watch port of Donkey Kong. They did this because the console used a clam shell design and a joystick wouldn't let the system close.
Nintendo would then patent its D-pad design, preventing others from using it on their own systems. This is why companies like Sega put circles around its D-pads.

I had a crapload of old wrapping paper of something my kid isn't into anymore so to use it up I individually wrapped well over a dozen small items (pins, individual stickers, etc) and I kept saying to my husband that I hope kiddo gets so mad at me for making him deal with that, it'll be so funny XD
#misha rambles#like. i say 'mad' but i mean a playful sort of mad#a 'i'm frustrated but also this is funny so i'm not really mad' kind of mad#i also sliced open my finger in the first 5 minutes because something sticky was on the scissors and i decided to really press my finger#down while wiping it away not realizing i was right on the blade#my husband roasted me for like 10 solid minutes while i cleaned it out rip#on the plus side the scissors must be in good shape cause it barely even hurt! good stuff!#though it hurts NOW....#is my dpad thumb tho i'm sad ;.;
