𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬

A/N: For @hp-12monthsofmagic’s May prompt (“Victory”). After going through multiple different scenarios involving the Battle of Hogwarts and Voldemort’s defeat, I settled on rewriting an old fic that I wrote a little less than three years ago. Set in November 2003.

“Who’s that, Momma?”

The little voice startled Sara O’Donnell-Lee out of her trance. She looked up from the photo album to see a small girl with reddish-brown hair and The Little Mermaid pajamas, her small girl. Sara pursed her lips, studying her daughter.

“What are you doing out of bed?” Sara asked.

“I want water,” Dora replied, offering Sara an innocent look that she did not buy.

“Uh-huh. Where’s Daddy?”

“He’s with Vi-vi.”

“Really?” Sara raised her eyebrow. Despite being only six months old, Violet was an incredibly good sleeper.

“Or maybe with Dec.”

That sounded more accurate. Her son had recently decided that sleep was for the weak and the best thing that a two-year-old could do was stay up the whole night. He’d also quit napping, right around the time that Violet was born because of course he did.

“The people, Momma,” Dora exclaimed, sounding exasperated in the way that only a four-year-old could.

Sara sighed, but pulled Dora into her lap anyways. She placed the photo album into their laps, flipping back to the first page of photos.

“Who do you know?” she asked, pointing to the first picture.

“That’s Unca Ryan!” Dora exclaimed in excitement, pointing to the sixteen-year-old form of her middle brother. “And that’s Unca Conor and Aunt Cara and Aunt Penny and Aunt Rowan!”

“Yeah. That’s right. And there’s me and Daddy.”

“The people?”

Sara stared at the next photo for a long moment, a bittersweet smile forming on her face. The photo had been taken in her sixth year, by Charlie Weasley with Penny Haywood’s camera. The five Hufflepuff girls were smiling widely, Tonks’s hair changed color every other moment. They had no idea what was to come, how much things would change, that in ten short years one of them would be dead.

“Well, that’s Momma and that’s Aunt Penny and that’s Aunt Rowan,” Sara began pointing to each of the girls as she said their names. “And this is Chiara. She sometimes works with Momma.”

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “This is Tonks. She was probably my best friend. We were not the type of friendship that people expected. Tonks was kind of like Uncle Ryan and I was not. She passed away a while ago, so she’s with Grandma and Granda O’Donnell. In fact, Dora, we named you after her.”

There was no response and Sara looked down. Dora’s eyes were shut and she clung tightly to the plush bunny that Sara hadn’t realized that her daughter had brought down with her. She gently closed the photo album and placed it onto the coffee table, scooping Dora up to bring her to bed. Once Dora had been settled into bed, Sara took a moment to peak in on baby Violet, who was sleeping soundly. The nature of a third child, Sara supposed. She paused at the top of the stairs, smiling at the sound of Barnaby’s baritone, softly muted through the door of their son’s bedroom.

She stepped back into the living room and slid the photo album back into the bookcase by the fireplace. She stared at the photos on the bookcase. There were a myriad of photos, reflecting the many different points in her life. Herself as a child, grinning with her grandparents and siblings. Her time at Hogwarts. A photo of her and Barnaby after their lowkey wedding. A photo of her holding baby Dora and one with baby Declan and a third one with baby Violet. The newest family photo, with her siblings and new nephew, Michael, and her sisters-in-law. One of her and Barnaby at each of her siblings’ weddings. One of the cursebreaking crew members in the Order of the Phoenix. One of her and Tonks.

“Love?” Barnaby’s voice and arms wrapping around her waist startled herself out of the trance.

“Declan asleep?” she asked.

“Yeah. Kid conked out right after I started talking about the different ways to care for creatures.”

“That boy is not going to follow your footsteps into magiozoology.”

“No, he is not. What’s on your mind, my dear?”

“Dora asked about some photos from our younger days. I’ve been thinking about Tonks a lot tonight.”

“Oh, love.”

“Yeah. But you know, Barn, it feels like her death meant something. There’s been so many other pointless deaths in my life but hers felt different.”

“We won.”

“Yes. She helped to make it possible for us to give those kids a life where they aren’t afraid. To give her son a life where he isn’t afraid. And that feels like a victory.”

About Michael: As the eldest child, Michael is a trouble magnet. He does not go seeking trouble, but somehow, he often ends up in it… usually as the result of a poorly thought out plan. This tends to happen a lot when Michael is accompanied by his cousins, Violet and Keira, who are pretty much his best friends. He enjoys spending time with his family a lot. They’re big and loud and crazy, but Michael wouldn’t trade them for anything, especially because he’s never left feeling lost or alone when he’s with them. He has a good relationship (usually) with his sister, Winifred, who he can be quite protective of. He also has good relationships with his parents, although he’s a little closer to his father than he is to his mother, but he loves them both.

Upon starting Hogwarts, Michael was sorted into Hufflepuff, just like his mother. He joined the frog choir in his first year and joined the Hufflepuff quidditch team as a beater in his fourth year before being made a prefect in his fifth year. Despite this, though, Michael often finds himself landing in detention quite a fair bit, mostly as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or taking the fall for one of his cousins or his sister. He loved his time at Hogwarts, finding out who he was and what he was interested in doing with his life.

After graduating, Michael started working at the Ministry of Magic, but quickly grew tired of the monotony of work that he was presented with. Therefore, Michael quit his job and began working at the reopened Fortescue’s Ice Cream Shop, where he discovered his love for working with food. Michael let this desire take over and soon he began to save in order to open up his own cafe, which he eventually succeeded in doing.

Trivia:

Michael is bilingual, being fluent in both English and Irish Gaelic.

Michael is in a bit of a close trio with his cousins, Violet and Keira.

He is named after his grandfathers. Michael is his father’s and paternal grandfather’s middle name, while George Haywood is his maternal grandfather.

Michael can be quite protective of his sister and younger cousins. He’s the third oldest out of the ten O’Donnell cousins, after all.

She has a good relationship with her parents, although she’s closer to her mother than her father. She’s also got a close relationship with her cousin, Brendan, who’s only a few days older than she is. In addition, she’s generally got a good relationship with her older brother, Michael, although she finds him to be obnoxious in that way that younger sisters do.

Upon starting Hogwarts, Winifred was sorted into Gryffindor, just like her father. Unlike her brother, she didn’t join the quidditch team and she wasn’t named prefect. Instead, Winifred joined the frog choir in her first year as she found that she really enjoyed singing, even though there was no way that she would go and sing professionally. She also discovered her sexuality pretty early on in her time at Hogwarts and had her first girlfriend at the age of 14. It was a short-lived relationship, though.

After graduating from Hogwarts, Winifred went on to become a cursebreaker, following in the footsteps of her father.

Upon starting Hogwarts, Keira was sorted into Gryffindor after a hatstall between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. She enjoyed her time at Hogwarts, discovering that her passion for history ran deep and discovering little facts about her biological parents, like that her father had been a Gryffindor too. She never joined the quidditch team, having little interest in the sport beyond supporting her family. However, she was made a prefect in her fifth year and became head girl in her seventh year.

After graduating from Hogwarts, Keira went on to become a magical historian, which eventually led to her taking on the position of history of magic professor at Hogwarts. She also continued to research into her biological parents and while never satisfied with her finds, she made peace with what she had found.

Trivia:

Keira was adopted in May of 2003, at the age of five months old. She had no memory of her biological parents, Hana and Akio Kishi, muggleborns who were murdered by a rogue blood purist leftover from Voldemort’s war. She is of Japanese descent, with both her parents being children of Japanese immigrants to the UK in the 1960s.

Keira is an animagus, taking the form of a tabby cat. She pursued it after graduating from Hogwarts.

She finds herself at home in Ravenclaw and gains a lot of confidence in herself while at Hogwarts. In her fifth year, she makes the Ravenclaw quidditch in the position of chaser. Quidditch is not her passion, but nevertheless Violet enjoys playing the sport. There’s always a bit of dread whenever she plays Slytherin in her fifth year, knowing that her older brother, Declan, is their seeker and captain and that he’s being scouted by professional teams. She doesn’t want to make him look bad, even if they bicker a lot.

After graduating from Hogwarts, Violet’s path diverged slightly from her older sister’s and younger brother’s paths. Instead of becoming a magiozoologist (or a quidditch player like Declan), Violet went into the field of magioveterinary practice. Like her siblings, Violet also ends up working at the O’Donnell-Lee Creature Reserve & Rehab Center.

Violet’s middle name is after her Aunt Cara.

Upon starting Hogwarts, Brendan is quickly sorted into Hufflepuff. He finds himself to be quite at home in Hufflepuff, making friends easily, even though he’s a bit shy. He never joins the quidditch team or is made a prefect, but he doesn’t mind. Indeed, it gives Brendan more time to do what he wants. He does join the magical creatures club, though.

After graduating from Hogwarts, Brendan becomes a magiozoologist, following in the footsteps of his father and oldest sister. He also eventually makes his way to working at the O’Donnell-Lee Creature Reserve and Rehab Center, but he doesn’t start there.

Trivia:

Brendan is technically named after his mother. Barnaby suggested the name Brendan after discovering that it meant prince as Sara is a Hebrew name meaning princess. His middle name is after his uncle.

Brendan is fluent in English and Irish Gaelic, just like the rest of his siblings and cousins.

Seth just likes understanding mysteries and everything around him. He’s got a close relationship with his triplets, Naomi and Ciaran, even though they bicker quite a bit. He’s got a closer relationship with his mother, too, but gets along well with his father.

Upon starting Hogwarts, Seth was sorted into Ravenclaw, just like both of his parents. He found himself feeling quite comfortable in Ravenclaw, which was helped by the fact that his triplets had been sorted in there as well. He joined the Ravenclaw quidditch team in his fourth year in the position of beater. In his fifth year, he was made a prefect alongside his sister.

After graduating from Hogwarts, Seth was inspired by his late paternal grandfather and joined the aurors. He found himself quite content with the career, enjoying the fast pace.

Trivia:

Seth shares his middle name with his father and paternal great-grandfather. His first name is shared with his maternal grandfather, who’s middle name is Seth.

Seth is trilingual, fluent in English, Irish Gaelic, and Yiddish. He’s also familiar with Hebrew.

Seth and his siblings are technically Jewish, because his mother is Jewish. However, both Jewish and Christian traditions occur in the O’Donnell-Lyman household.

The Journey

Day 1: The Journey for @cursebreakerfarrier’s Back to School Challenge ; also honoring Declan’s September 1 birthday

The year he turned eleven, Declan O’Donnell-Lee hated his birthday. He didn’t hate his birthday in general, but some of the magic of a birthday was lost when you were supposed to begin a new school on it. As he stared up at the scarlet engine, his stomach began to turn. The cake that he’d had for breakfast hadn’t done much to calm his nerves, but that had been a nice surprise. The previous two years they’d had cake after dinner, after they’d dropped Dora off at the platform. Except this year, it was Declan’s turn to climb onto the train.

“Dec, sweetheart, everything will be fine,” Mum said, running a soothing hand through his auburn hair.

“Your mother’s right, kiddo. You’ll find your place and make friends you never even thought you would. I had never expected to meet your mother and aunt and uncles,” Dad said, clapping a hand on Declan’s shoulder.

“Plus, Dora can show you the ropes.”

A groan came from his thirteen-year-old sister. “I’m not going to babysit him. I have my own life,” Dora responded.

“I don’t need a babysitter, Dora.”

“And, Aunt Ruth will always be there if you’re feeling a little homesick,” Mum added. Aunt Ruth was currently the part-time charms professor, teaching the first through fourth years.

At that moment, the train whistled and Dora gave Mum, Dad, Violet, and Brendan each a quick hug before hopping onto the train.

“Alright, kiddo, have a great few months. Mum and I’ll write at least once a week. And again, happy birthday, Declan. I know this probably isn’t the best birthday, but there’s a little something hidden for you amongst your trunks,” Dad said, pulling Declan in for a tight hug.

“Barnaby! You weren’t supposed to tell him that. It was supposed to be a surprise. Anyways, have a great few months, sweetheart. I love you. And yes, happy birthday, Dec,” Mum said, pulling him into another hug.

“Love you, too,” Declan murmured, hugging them back.

He let out a slow breath and climbed onto the train. He leaned out of the window, waving furiously to his parents and younger siblings as they began to disappear from view. He started as a hand clapped his shoulder.

“Happy birthday, Dec. Now, I’m going to find my friends. Find somewhere to sit and I’ll cheer you on when you get sorted,” Dora said. “And relax. Everything will be fine. Mum and Dad are right, Aunt Ruth will be there if you have any issues.”

Day Four: Mother's Daughter (Talk about a female fankid that you love) of @endlessly-cursed’s HP women appreciation week

Lucretia “Lucy” and Matilda “Mattie” Devlin → Two of William Devlin and Josie Edwards’s (@slytherindisaster) three daughters, Lucy and Mattie each take after one of their parents. Lucy has her mother’s passion for nature and creatures, while Mattie has her father’s creativity but channels it into both piano and painting. Both girls also have their parents’ reserved natures (Mattie is more outgoing, though) and are both twins. Lucy is an identical twin, while Mattie is a fraternal twin.

Catherine “Kate” O’Neill → One of Rory O’Neill and Ethel Malinda’s (@gaygryffindorgal) twin daughters, Kate is her father’s daughter. She’s quite similar in personality to him, without all the trauma. She’s passionate about quidditch, but has never loved playing the sport and instead follows her mother’s footsteps into journalism, focusing on writing about quidditch.

Theodora “Dora” O’Donnell-Lee → The eldest daughter of Sara O’Donnell and Barnaby Lee, Dora is her mother’s daughter coupled with her father’s passion for creatures. Perhaps one of the first fankids I have, Dora has had many different iterations over the past few years. She’s always remained soft and passionate about animals. She is the eldest of the O’Donnell cousins, having three younger siblings and six younger cousins. Dora can be quite protective of her younger siblings and cousins.

Flora MacKade → The only daughter of Finn MacKade and Scotty Rosier (@drinkyoursoupbitch), Flora is the second eldest MacKade cousin. She’s a fascinating combination of her mother and father and my only female character who goes on to play quidditch professionally. Flora is plays chaser on her quidditch teams and often keeps an eye on her younger brother and cousins.

And how do you think Niamh and Minerva would handle helping out their dormmmates' births? (in Prim's case, Gia's birth, that was rather tense and lasted an entire day, and Sara's twins with the King, who was dead at the time) would they be level-headed, or there'd be a time where they fear for their friend?

Dora O’Donnell-Lee

1.) She is named after Tonks. However, her full name is Theodora as Sara and Barnaby agreed that Tonks was right and Nymphadora wasn’t the greatest name. Dora is also named after her late maternal grandmother, Ailis, and shares the middle name with her mother and a cousin or two.

2.) Dora is a Hufflepuff, just like her mother, two aunts, her youngest brother, Brendan, and her younger cousin, Michael.

3.) Dora becomes a magiozoologist, just like her father. Perhaps a bit ironically, her youngest brother, Brendan, also becomes a magiozoologist.

4.) Dora is bisexual.

5.) As the eldest O’Donnell cousin, Dora takes looking after her younger cousins and siblings quite seriously. She isn’t like another parent, but she just makes sure that no one is hassling them, especially when they’re at Hogwarts.

How do you think Niamh and Minerva would handle helping out their dormmmates' births?

— Niamh would generally be pretty levelheaded, but wouldn’t quite understand everything until Gia’s birth. This is because Niamh has her first child (Róisín) is born around the same time as Gia. It would just depend if Gia is born before or after April 22. If Gia was born after that date, Niamh would still be pretty levelheaded, but there would be a bit more fear as she now understands the risks better. If Gia was born before that date, Niamh probably wouldn’t be able to help out.

— It would definitely depend on the circumstances for Minerva. She would probably be fairly levelheaded, but perhaps not the best support. There might be a bit of fear, especially when one of her sisters had a rough birth with one of her nephews. She would also handle it differently if she had already had Atticus and Daphne, who were born on August 31, 1907. Minerva would generally try to stay levelheaded, but might end up calling her mother instead.

Seashells

For Sara O’Donnell-Lee, there was nothing quite like walking alongside the northern Atlantic with her family, especially as her eldest was to start Hogwarts in a few weeks’ time. She could hear her husband explaining some creature or other to three of her children. Dora, Violet, and Brendan all shared Barnaby’s intense fascination with creatures. Their eldest son, Declan, did not, though.

Instead, he was wandering ahead of them, kicking a football down the sandy beach. Sara watched her son, while absentmindedly listening to her husband’s voice as she meandered closer to Declan. Abruptly, the boy stopped and crouched down to something, which he studied intently for a few moments.

“What are you looking at, kiddo?” Sara called, as she approached him.

“Nothing.” He paused, cocking his head to the side. “A sea shell.”

Sara knelt down next to him. The sea shell in question was surprisingly large and in one piece. It shimmered in the fading sunlight.

“That’s a pretty shell,” she said.

Declan shrugged. “I guess. It does look nice.”

“What are you thinking about, Dec?”

He shrugged again. Sara sighed. He reminded her so much of her brother, Conor, some days.

“Ooo! Pretty!” Brendan shrieked, toddling over and attempting to pick up the shell with his clumsy toddler hands.

Do you have some fun facts or random headcanons about Declan you’d like to share?

— Declan is very similar to his uncle, Conor. In fact, Declan learned the basics of playing seeker from his uncle. Uncle Ryan and Aunt Cara both played chaser, while Uncle Conor played seeker.

— Declan has a fondness for Fair Isle sweaters and Irish fisherman sweaters. He likes that they’re warm and comfortable.

— Declan spends his entire quidditch career playing for the Ballycastle Bats. It’s not completely unheard of, but many players often played for more than one team.

— Declan is close with both his parents, especially once he started Hogwarts. It’s Sara who notices that something is going on with him in his seventh year and asked him about it at his graduation party.

— As a young child, Declan and Barnaby discovered a jarvey living in their garden. Declan decided to name it “Harvey.”

— Declan has always been secure in his sexuality. Watching his siblings and some of his cousins struggle with discovering their sexualities contributes to Declan feeling like his own issues aren’t real reasons to struggle.

A/N: For @hp-12monthsofmagic’s December prompt (“Merry and Bright”). Made up of two short scenes. Note the discussions of Hanukkah and Judaism may not be the most accurate, so apologies for any missteps.

One: The O’Donnell-Lee Cottage, County Donegal, Ireland, December 25, 2006

Sara O’Donnell-Lee watched the gentle fall of snow, illuminated in the color of the charmed baubles that floated outside around their cottage. Her eldest son, aged 5, was fast asleep in her lap with her fingers carding through his short red hair. Her eldest daughter, aged 7, was asleep on the floor, clutching the plush moon calf that she had received earlier that day. Sara’s younger two children, aged 2 and 7 months, had been put to bed earlier. The floor was strewn with the remnants of gifts that had been received earlier in the day, the lights on their tree sparkling. A calloused hand ran gently over her shoulder, causing her to look up.

“Happy Christmas, my love,” her husband, Barnaby, said, leaning over to press a kiss onto the top of her head.

“Merry Christmas, Barn,” Sara replied, wrapping her hand tightly around his.

“Was this Christmas everything that you imagined?”

“Yeah, I think it was. Dora and Declan were so excited for everything. I don’t think we’ll ever get this Ireland quidditch sweater off Dec.”

Barnaby laughed, fondly looking down at their son. Sara’s brother, Conor, had gifted their eldest boy an Ireland quidditch sweater, which their boy had quickly fallen in love with. The boy had even put the sweater on over his pajamas.

“It was a good Christmas, Barnaby. Everything about it this year was good. Actually, I’m surprised at how smoothly this all went,” Sara said.

“Yeah. I thought it would be a lot more stressful with four. Brendan’s so laid back though,” Barnaby replied.

“I hope you liked your gifts.”

“Those gloves are absolutely incredible. They’ll be so helpful in the cold. I love them, Sara. I really do. What about you?”

“The necklace is beautiful, Barn. I don’t know where you thought of the idea, but I absolutely adore it. Same with the little ornament with all six of our names on them.”

Two: The O’Donnell-Lyman Home, December 24, 2016

“Momma, why do we light all these candles?” Naomi O’Donnell, aged 7, asked, leaning over the kitchen table, watching as Ruth worked on setting out on the different candles.

“The purple and pink candles are for advent. That’s for the lead-up to Christmas. Dad can explain those better than me. The blue ones and white one are for Hanukkah, which is what my family celebrates,” Ruth explained.

“I like Hanukkah. The food is so fun and good,” Naomi replied.

“Yeah, Hanukkah has good food. We celebrate that because I’m Jewish, just like we have other traditions and holidays than Dad.”

“What’s Daddy, then?”

“Dad’s Catholic, so he has different holidays than I do.”

“Why?”

“Well, we have different beliefs from religions. For Dad, his religion says that Jesus is the son of God and very important. My religion doesn’t believe that. Only God is important, while Jesus isn’t very important and can be seen as hard to understand.”

“What do I believe?” Naomi asked.

“You can believe whatever you want to, Naomi. Dad and I don’t have any one way we want you or your brothers to believe. That’s why we celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas, Passover and Easter. We get to cover the important parts of each culture.”

“Oh. Is that why we eat certain things sometimes?”

“Yeah, that’s right kiddo.”

The door to the kitchen opened, bringing with it a burst of cold air. Stamping feet immediately followed as Ruth looked up to her husband and two sons. Snow clung to their hair and Conor had taken off his glasses to wipe away the fog.

“Got the potatoes you asked for,” Conor announced, lifting up a big bag.

“Conor, how many potatoes did you get?” Ruth asked.

A sheepish look appeared on Conor’s face. “Five pounds.”
