The facade was dropped. the three men before you stood in their royal glaive attire and you tried absorbing all of the information they have given you thus far. You took in their aging faces, tried to keep a steady breath.
The Old Kingdom was cursed by an old soul. He wandered the entire earth, looking for a light, a gift from the Astrals. He was once renounced by them, forced to linger in the darkness for the rest of his existence. For thousands of years, he was just a horror story to tell young princes but at the height of the Caelum reign, he appeared. There was no fighting the darkness. Noctis was to lay in that tower until the end of time. His friends were forced to live their existence out as well, living with the guilt of never being able to save him. The citizens that survived the fall had their memories of their home wiped from the mind more and more as the time went on.
And now, you were going to help the royal retainers save their prince.
“I never thought I'd be wearing armor,” You said as you tested out your movement in the plates and chains Ignis gave you. The leather was nice and supple, the plates were polished to a shine and they weighed heavily on your shoulders. You rubbed your temple.
Though your abilities with a sword were limited, Gladiolus taught you how to parry, block and attack. You tried your best with the armor and though you had the very basics down you could not evade half as well you hoped. You were sweating by the time you had plopped back in the grass. You wiped your shining face with a handkerchief.
Ignis paced around as Gladiolus and Prompto practiced evading. They seemed to almost walk into each other at one point but then Ignis danced around the other two so easily; it was startling to see them so agile.
You understood the roles they've taken on as royal retainers and sworn brothers of the prince. You understood their pain and grief but you didn't know what was the reason you were tied into all of this. All this started with stupid, simple dreams. Dreams that were dreams that didn't spill out into life and wrench her soul and her reality apart.
Ignis brought you out of your thoughts when he sat next to you. He took off his spectacles and you were able to fully see the extent of the scarring over his left eye. You even saw the drastic difference in colors of his irises. They used to be clear, bright green, able to see through every detail; now they were glassy, fogged, unfocused. His voice was tired, “Are you adjusting well to the news?”
You wanted to say something. You wanted to say something witty at the very least. After a moment, you sighed, “...I'm not really sure.”
You looked at him again, “You've been blind this whole time?”
Ignis had the grace to hide a smile and cough behind his hand, “Yes, I have been. That was unexpected, was that really-?”
“I'm trying to get back on track with all the thoughts, just the whole blind thing-.”
Your words failed you again. You put your face in your hands and groaned.
“When I sacrificed myself, for the good of my kingdom and for my king, gods rest his soul,” Ignis whispered, “I knew what the price had to be. I took it in stride. I carried on, how he wanted me to. Ive been blind for the past ten years, I've been able to get on-”
“All this time?” You cut across him.
Ignis almost laughed, “Yes, indeed.”
You struggled with words again.
“I don't know why I'm here.”
You had muttered out your sentence so quietly you didn't think Ignis heard you. There was a pause and two more pairs of feet came closer. You looked up from your hands and noticed that Gladiolus and Prompto had stopped sparring.
Ignis sighed. He cleared his throat, “I believe that you, (Y/N), are of pure heart. The Caleum Royal Family was known as the kingdom of Stars, Light; I could go on. Those with pure souls attract one to another, seeking out more light. When the darkness encapsulated our kingdom, it was because of a dark and evil soul, attuned to the shadows. Know that this holds tru-”
“English, Ignis,” Gladiolus grumbled.
“Oh, get off my backside!” Ignis hissed, “Noctis was attracted to the light in your soul, the Accursed is trying to smother that. Another point I'm trying to get to is that light always shines, but the darkness is what engulfs the light.”
You stared, dumbfounded.
“What if I can't do it? If I can't save him?”
“Then... pray the Astrals' grant you and us mercy.”
You nodded your head.
