Every time I mention the Inupiaq belief that women elders could kill people by eating their souls someone always says "sounds like bloodbending" and, respectfully, no it fucking doesn't.
There is no bodily control taken over the victims, nor is it overtly sudden. The victims go about their business without noticing what happened, gradually begin to feel ill and sluggish, then eventually collapse where they stand and die. It's more like being poisoned than anything. That only "sounds like bloodbending" if you think Inupiaq culture exists to be the Water Tribes' inspiration. I say this with love: if comparing it to bloodbending makes sense to you, please engage in critical thinking more often.

Read a Twitter thread a few days ago how Katsuki, Izuku and Tomura are meant to be the pillars of hope and change for hero society (by Kikibats, go check her out, the thread is her pinned tweet), and that got me thinking about Tomura's birth name, so I looked up the kanji for his name (志村 転弧, for those curious), and I wanted to share.
(someone probably already did make this connection and worded it better but screw it we bail let's go-)
Kikibats' thread has mentioned what "Shimura" could have originally meant In-Universe, especially "Mura", so it's about a paragraph short, because I'm writing what it could mean in the story as it is (again, In-Universe):
So from the name Shimura Tenko, we have:
Shi (志):
"Determination, ambition, intent", which Tenko does have, arguably even more than Izuku has (I mean, running around barely sleeping while facing Gigantomachia for three months? spending four months in a tube and resurrecting by sheer anger?), but ambitious is after realizing his convictions and intends to carry on the League's. It can also refer to “will” as in willpower, the one trait AFO doesn't have, and the reason he was selected as his vessel.
Mura (村):
Mentioned in her thread, but "Village", could be an ironic spin on “it takes a village to raise a child”, since after his family's death no one was willing to take him in, and the one who did only did so to groom him into a monster. It could also refer to a heroic trait he has (yes, even as he was annoyed at Toya and Himiko when he first met them): taking people in when he thinks they're lonely, have been rejected, wronged by society and wanting to carry on their convictions, which leads to:
Ten (転):
a verb; "to shift", and sure enough, he's the one who created the Vanguard Action Squad with the purpose of kidnapping Katsuki, setting off the Kamino Incident and shifting the status quo of society. You could argue he has been since the USJ but no one really feared him until Stain came along. Tomura is also one of the characters whose goals and motivations develop the most through the story.
It can also mean "to turn", from changed from the sweet kid who wanted to play heroes with his friends, to a symbol of fear. And physically, he's the willing participant in Dr. Garaki's body experimentation and his body is constantly shapeshifted depending on his (and AFO's) mental state.
Finally, “Ko” (弧):
The kanji for “arc”, which is admittedly very vague and it could mean nothing, but.
It could refer to the arc he goes through.
From a kid playing with those others ignored who wanted to be a hero, to being groomed into the Symbol of Evil('s puppet), which eventually unravels once he becomes powerful enough to fight Izuku, resulting in the reveal that in spite of all what he’s been through, he’s still that kid willing to extend his hand (well, in a metaphorical way) for those who want/need someone to rely on. Someone who wants to be the LoV's hero.
A bonus point, since we (readers and watchers who like to read the raws/watch subbed anime) use "Ko" we usually think of "子", the kanji for "kid", this one abandoned by a complacent village. And remember since Izuku wants to offer him a hand, a crying lonely child in need of a hero. With AFO taking control of him, while Izuku (and most of Class 1-A) trying to save him, wouldn't it be neat to see Tomura choosing to take Izuku's hand, especially someone whose identity was forcefully defined by a touch of death?
Would be fitting for his arc to come full circle, wouldn't it?

Hello there, @bugeyedfreaks,
Yes, this may or may not be related to the Powerpuff Girls cartoon show itself, but, in addition to providing the voice of The Powerpuff Girls' so-called "commander and the leader" Blossom, the voice for whom she is best known in so many circles, Cathy Cavadini once provided the voice of Fievel's older sister Tanya Mousekewitz for An American Tail's 1991 sequel Fievel Goes West as well as the Fievel's American Tails TV show from which it spawned. And here she is in her beautiful, pretty, lovely, gorgeous and very stunning "the Girl You Left Behind" show girl gown dress outfit thing and makeup during Fievel Goes West's saloon scenes:
Speaking of Cathy Cavadini voicing Tanya, I had heard somewhere along the grapevines that during the making of An American Tail: Fievel Goes West itself, Tanya was supposed to be voiced in that movie by someone else filling in for Amy Green and Betsy Cathcart who had respectively spoken and sang as the Tanya character in the original 1986 American Tail movie of Don Bluth, when one day, the late great movie music composer James Horner (who worked with James Cameron on the music for Aliens, Titanic, and Jim Cameron's Avatar movie from 2009) was listening to Cathy Cavadini singing her demo of the beautiful Fievel Goes West song "Dreams to Dream", and in fact, James Horner was so moved by Cavadini's singing demo of the Dreams to Dream song, which touches and sends his heartstrings all the way down to its very core, that James Horner himself successfully persuades presenter and producer Steven Spielberg to let Cavadini voice Tanya for Fievel Goes West in the finished film. And the rest, they say, was history.
In addition, @bugeyedfreaks, I had actually got in touch with Cathy Cavadini herself online, and back in July 23rd, 2021, in fact, I sent her a very sweet message of an email to her requesting for an mp3 shoutout recording and two autograph pictures featuring two of the characters that she voiced, one of Blossom the Powerpuff Girl, and one of Fievel's mouse sister Tanya, and here they are hanging in my bedroom:
And here's the very cute and very beautiful, and aforementioned mp3 shoutout recording that Cathy Cavadini happen to sent me back in July 2021, and featuring Cathy Cavadini herself, as well as Blossom the Powerpuff Girl and Tanya the girl mouse singer of An American Tail fame, complete with part of the beautiful Dreams to Dream song that Tanya sang in A Capella:
Now, I may not know why I got those two autograph pictures and one mp3 shoutout recording from Cathy Cavadini back in July 2021, but as the story goes, Cathy Cavadini really liked my sweet email to her so much that she agrees to send me those three things, but on the condition that I pay eighty dollars for those things.
So I called up my mom, who happened to finish up cleaning out her sister's old house for the night at the time, on the phone to send her some good news about me sending a sweet message to Cathy Cavadini and I told her that she and I will pay 80 bucks for the Blossom and Tanya autograph pictures and one mp3 shoutout recording from Cathy Cavadini, and soon enough, my mother and I paid eighty dollars for it all using something like PayPal or something, and now, I'm still happy with the Cathy Cavadini/Blossom/Tanya mp3 shoutout recording and the two autograph pictures of Blossom and Tanya hanging side by side on my bedroom.
Yes, you, just like everyone else, may always and forever remember Cathy Cavadini best for voicing Blossom, the so-called "commander and the leader" of the Powerpuff Girls who hailed from the City of Townsville, but as a matter of fact, @bugeyedfreaks, Cathy Cavadini is also the voice of An American Tail: Fievel Goes West's Divine Diva Showgirl, Miss Tanya Mousekewitz, elder sister of Fievel Mousekewitz of Don Bluth's An American Tail fame:
So, what do you think?
Yours truly,
@ulyssesbobmac
Nice! Another member of the Cathy Cavadini fan elite! 💪 She's truly the best of the best.
I swear I’ve mentioned it on my blog before, but when I was a little baby Bug (a grub, if you will), I would basically watch two particular VHS tapes on repeat: one was Cinderella, and the other was Fievel Goes West. There’s SO much that I loved about that movie, but I adored Tanya and her story, and along with all the songs from Cinderella, I would absolutely belt out hers whenever I got the chance. Later on, when I ended up becoming the huge Blossom fan that I am today, I looked into Cathy’s old work and was surprised/not surprised to find out she voiced and sang as my fave mouse girl. Crazy! That's also such a cool story about how she got the role, but the lady's got excellent pipes. It was a no-brainer for them to cast her. 😆
And I’m so glad that you got those autographs and that voice recording from her! That's very sweet. I got to meet her and the girls and Tom Kane a couple years back and she was seriously one of the nicest of the bunch, so I definitely hope that in the future you get the opportunity to say hi to her in person! 💖

Hello! First off I just want to say how much I appreciate all the work you've done on the fandom stats over the years. It's always fascinating to see the numbers and try to figure what they mean (if anything 😉)! I also love it whenever you make an appearance on the fansplaining podcast!
Here's a somewhat random question that I'm not sure you'll be able to answer directly, but may be food for thought:
I recently saw a screenshot of someone's AO3 home page (logged in) and they had favorite tags shown like "fluff", "hurt/comfort", etc. This seems absolutely wild to me. I use favorite tags to keep my rarepairs or ships from old fandoms so I can always go back and find them easily just to see if new stuff popped up for my ships. I assumed (incorrectly apparently) that everyone else did the same. At most maybe people would favorite a fandom specific tag that has meaning for them so they could find stories about that thing in particular. But having something like "fluff" with its bajillion stories seems daunting. I'm curious if there's some way to get aggregated stats on what tags users have as favorites? I know there's a limit (something like 25 tags?) per user, so it's not a total free for all, there does have to be some selection.
Would be interesting to see what types of things AO3 users want quick access to. Is it relationship tags (like me)? Characters and fandoms? Or really the wide ranging free form tags?
Thank you so much!
Hey! Thanks for the kind note. :) And that's interesting -- I would have expected that people would use the AO3 Favorite Tags function mostly for some combo of ships, fandoms, and perhaps some very specific tropes. Something like "Fluff" would not have occurred to me, either! (But I didn't even realize there was a limit -- I have not investigated this feature much at all.)
I have no way of accessing the broader data about who saves which tags as favorites (though possibly someone like @zz9pzza might be able to share some general data...?). But -- I would love to hear from AO3 users about whether & how they use Favorite Tags!
Mine are an Extremely Specific set of ship + fandom tags based on my current extremely specific hyperfixation (I reblog a lot of different fandom stuff, but my brain only ever wants to read one fandom at a time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). Aw, heck, I'll go ahead and share a screenshot of mine as a bit of anecdata, and in case anyone is confused about what feature we're talking about (but please don't be a dick about my life choices in the notes! ;D ):
^We're talking about the things in the magenta square there! (And if anyone is curious why my page is black, I use the Reversi site skin.)
Share your own -- or just more general observations about what kinds of tags you favorite -- if you feel comfortable!

It's interesting that in the book there are mentions of werewolves and selkies and face-changers but in the movie it's implied Nimona's the only one. I think "Nimona is unique because none of these other supernatural creatures are like her" and "Nimona is unique because she's the only one" are both compelling, in different ways. One's about standing out even among those you were meant to fit in with and one's about being completely alone. I dunno, I just think it's fun
