Summary

Honestly, I bought this one because the cover is cute. I don’t even collect Pure Neemo. What is wrong with me? Anyway the patterns in here are cute and I would definitely make some of them if I had a doll they would fit. There are lots of patterns this time too. The saving grace for me is the Gingham set for Unoa girls / slim minis.

Typical for Dollybird, pattern instructions consist only of a few diagrams and written instructions. They usually require some sewing skill and luck with google translate 

Lots of irrelevant pages like shopping spreads, which are well out of date now even if you could get a proxy to shop for you in Japan

Final thoughts

Definitely a nice one to pick up if you have Pure Neemo sized dolls.

The Dolly Insider + Dollybird

The US doesn't have a fashion doll magazine anymore (sadness), but there's a website with email subscription called The Dolly Insider.

Courtesy of this website, I have learned that Hobby Japan, a Japanese hobby store and media company, makes a book called Dollybird. It's Japanese language only, released annually, and I am so jealous.

It runs from 1,800 to 2,200 yen, has to be imported to the US, and contains interviews (including face-up tutorials by Gentaro Araki), patterns, and tutorials (how to make eyes, learning to make purses with felt or leather, etc.).

So of course now I'm shopping. Amazon (US) has a few volumes for $40+ USD. I've also found:

CDJapan (English, ships to US)

Mandarake (sort of English, but I recommend Google Translate and using proxy like Buyee, cuz HOO boy, their shipping is pricey)

Amazon Japan (but my US account does not work. I would have to create a new account)

Japan Figure (English, $5 off your first order)

I've been saying I want to learn Japanese for a while, and this just might be the thing that lights a fire under my butt.

Dollybird 14 [Review]

Summary

The Alice in Wonderland edition - I really love Alice in Wonderland so the aesthetic of this volume won me over. The cover has a gorgeous illustration of Alice surrounded by cakes and trinkets from Wonderland. There are lovely editorial spreads within depicting the classic tale as well as some darker, moodier 'dark alice' themed pages. Having said all that, there are not many patterns in this one, so disappointing!

A bewigged and chiffon caftan-clad Beryl Reid conducting a séance and speaking in the voice of a child … suave Hollywood bad guy George Sanders (in his final film role) as her sinister butler Shadwell … a surly antisocial biker gang called The Living Dead, whose hellraising members are named things like Hatchet, Gash and Chopped Meat but whose tough skull-and-crossbones image is belied by the fact the actors all speak in upper-crust posh tones like they’ve received elocution lessons from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art … Robert Hardy from All Creatures Great and Small as the chief of police on their case … grocery shoppers at the Hepworth Way shopping centre in Walton-on-Thames being terrorized by The Living Dead (the camera really ogles the pram-pushing young “dollybird” mums wearing miniskirts and hotpants) … occultism centred around the worship of “The Frog God” (prepare for a lot of close-ups of a frog under a bell jar ribbiting) … and a fleeting appearance from June Brown long before she played Dot Cotton in Eastenders … YES! I can only be talking about Psychomania (1973) (aka The Death Wheelers). Tagline: “The Dead Still Ride...the living howl in TERROR!” I revisited this endearingly terrible British exploitation horror oddity last weekend. For anyone squeamish: there’s a high body count, but absolutely zero blood or gore. And Psychomania is brimming with kitschy early seventies charm (and every outdoor scene features typically drab overcast British weather).
