Note from submitter: datd is like THE hc/3l fic to me it ties together the two overlapping strings of plot without feeling uncomfortable and it makes rk into a character of his own instead of being a silly game of thrones impression. it has so many fun chapter endings that must have made the people who were there while it was live updating want to Scream. the writing is so good i want to podfic it. doc slowly figuring out the importance of martyn, a man he's never met, only through his interactions with rk is genuinely brilliant, and if you like either hermitcraft or the life series you've probably already read this, but if you haven't then you completely should.

rereading datd and this scene still makes me go "Man."

Ren becoming the HC king is so funny from a Dog at The Door view, because you can picture Ren doing his silly little king things all while RK is screaming in the back of his mind that “THIS IS NOT HOW BEING KING WORKS, I TOLD YOU GAME OF THRONES WAS NOT VALID RESEARCH MATERIAL.” Or “REN MONARCHS DO NOT GET VOTED INTO POWER, THIS IS A STRAIGHT UP DEMOCRATIC ELECTION.”

I re-read Dog at the Door and then rewatched some of the first few episodes of Doc’s season 8 and I could only put my feelings into form in one way so here you go.

on a scale from dog at the door ren (“I’m not dying, I’m dead already.”) to ehk’s the body (“He wasn’t a goddamn ghost.”), what flavour of badly and incorrectly is your initial response to, uh, to uh. yknow. getting abruptly dumped back into awareness after having been ritually sacrificed into a pretty spooky god using your body for a substantial length of time, to a degree which cannot be fully removed and which left permanent modifications.

this is how my brain pictures the van, pictured as well is crochet rugs that renbob made, closet with blankets and single sword, bathroom with shower extending behind closet, perspective from on the bed, couch right beside, half wall with beaded curtain separating the kitchen to the left and work bench to the right, more bead curtains on the back wall in front of the door to the cockpit, macrame, and tons of cabinets on every ceiling that only have more blankets or bead curtains.

okay so i finished dog at the door today, that one red king fanfiction that is beloved by the 3rd life fandom. i kept putting it off bc im not really a hermitcraft fan, and i didnt know doc very well, but i did it and now im so glad i did its literally so good.

im still caught up on like, the love ren and rk clearly have for martyn (even if its platonic), and the way rk just cant help but care about people in rens life. also im super not okay about martyn being in the void im like, breaking down about it. its literally his canon lore and its so fucked up and i just want him to have good things, but at the same time this made for such a good cliffhanger if theyre doing another one bc its like “and then everything was okay for these two. but.. yk, martyn has his own problems hes going through” and i desperately just want to see martyn and rk interact literally ever.

also i am kissing rk on the mouth, im head over heels for him, its insane. get yourself a fictional character to rotate in your mind like a microwave this is so enriching

I’ve been in so many fandoms where I refuse to read one of the fandoms trademarked iconic fics that pretty much everyone else has read, except for like…me and three other people. But then! I cave and read it after being in the fandom for a while and every single time I have been left a shell of a person after finishing the fic…A person changed permanently…And then the worst part is that I have to admit that everyone else was right, the fic slapped and I was just being stubborn for no reason lol.

Read dog at the door for the first time yesterday. And it's written so much like a book and not a fan fiction that I'm rereading it and catching the symbolism and stuff. If you liked datd I recommend rereading it. You definitely missed something.
