I think the Oaks should be inhuman. I want some eldritch fucking hippies.

I want to see Normal keep practicing his cheers a little too long, stamina still up in the sky when everyone around him is exhausted, not even sweating, when he’s been going for hours without a break. I want to see Hero be shown to not blink, or to not breathe like humans should. I want to see Lark have such mastery over his weapons that they seem to be a part of him, and when you look too close, it doesn’t just seem like his weapons are a part of him. I want to see Sparrow be a little too still at times, when listening to something, or when paying attention, not making even the slightest of sounds, not even a heartbeat. I wanted to see Henry smell, not just badly, but like a burning pain that shouldn’t be familiar but is. I wanted to see Barry twist and move in ways he shouldn’t, cracking and popping a few too many times, comfortable in positions he shouldn’t even be able to achieve.

Henry's arc made me a lot more emotional than I was expecting, and I think it's because I liked how the oak family story is an allegory for intergenerational trauma and good trauma.

In their case, the trauma that gets passed down from generation to generation is the literal doodler, who Hildy dealt with first and her trauma undoubtedly affected Barry, and consequently Henry, Lark, and Sparrow.

Barry tries to treat the doodler and his trauma as good trauma; he's the chosen one. He's special because of his trauma, and it fuels him to try and be perfect in every way possible. It's similar to the way a lot of people cope with their trauma by deciding that it has to give their lives purpose and meaning and that they were chosen by their trauma to accomplish something.

But Henry shows the other side of trauma and how not acknowledging it for what it is-- something bad that hurt you or affected you-- and instead trying to act like it gives you meaning doesn't mean it hurt you any less and you can get burnt out. Ultimately, acknowledging and accepting your life as it is will bring you more peace than trying to conquer a part of yourself and being in denial.

I also find it interesting that Henry and Barry's arc in some ways parallels Grant and Daryl's, where the two sons feel like they can't talk about their emotions or problems because their dads seem infallible (with Barry being far more critical of Henry and Daryl simply being unaware of the consequences his emotional unavailability have for Grant, but still).

As someone who is definitely a victim of intergenerational trauma, it was nice to see Henry stand up to his dad and finally talk about what hurt him and his family. To accept that this is a part of them and instead of trying to suppress it or celebrate it, be neutral and learn to live with it in a healthier way.
