Gun Sound Design In Video Games
I play a lot of video games, and most of the games I play are first-person shooters or at least involve projectile weapons in one way or another. But even though I’ve always admired the sound design for some of my favourite in game weapons, I have never really looked into how they are made, until I started the Splash Damage Game Audio 1 assignment.
Our lecturer Josh gave an excellent breakdown of his demo for the Game Audio 1 assignment in class, and briefly covered his gun sound design. After getting home and looking into it a bit more, almost all of the articles I’ve read break the sound of a gun or projectile weapon into 3 parts.
1. Main body of the sound. This will be the actual sound a gun emits when firing, the classic bang.
2. The mechanics of the sound. This can involve things like trigger clicks, the gun being cocked, loading of a bullet/magazine or in the case of the Minigun in the Dirty Bomb trailer, the actual mechanism of the gun spinning each barrel into firing position.
3. The bass or punch layer. This layer gives the weapon weight. In video games you want to be able to physically feel the bass frequency changes between a small 9mm pistol and a massive 50.Cal Heavy Machine Gun. This helps players decipher through sound alone what type of gun they themselves are firing, or what is being fired at them.
Despite seeming limited for our subject, such structure provides a good backbone for designing any futuristic gun. However, it can be expanded to a much wider list of possible elements to accommodate better realism and uniqueness. -  (Andersen, 2015)
For my Dirty Bomb trailer I wanted to use this system when creating the sky laser weapon for the character Kira. This weapon is not just a typical gun, it is a small pistols looking weapon that seems to use a satellite based charge to fire powerful laser beams down on an enemy. So the 3 tier based system would work as a base layer, and then I can add the futuristic elements to build an interesting sound.
I started with the trigger sound. Layers of mechanical samples were sliced and positioned to sound like Kira was pulling on a real trigger. Second came the initial snap of the lasers building up, using short and snappy beam sounds that morphed into the charging sequence gives the feeling of the gun building up. The charging/building sound was created by 3 layers of different synth samples stretched out to fit the on screen timing, but automated from low volume to high, empathising that build-up into the firing of the laser system. And the weapons tail sound is the explosion that it caused.
“Matching weapon’s appearance is an important step to achieving realism in sound design. Try to imagine how a weapon would sound in real life: its power, type of energy, amount of mechanics and details, duration of charging and discharging. While matching weapon’s size keep the following rule of thumb in mind — bigger guns sound louder and boomier hence the sound would contain more low frequencies, probably with a sharper attack and longer decay. Smaller guns, on the other hand, tend to have shorter decays and less “oomph”. -   (Andersen, 2015)
On reflection, I feel like in terms of the trailer, and were my sound fits within the trailers mix, I think I did a good job. The weapon has that futuristic character that sets it apart from the other guns seen in the trailer, and it leads well into the trailer outro through the way I’ve mixed it with the soundtrack. But going by the quote above, and thinking about how it would fit within the actual game when the weapon is being fired in a live gaming session, I feel there could be a few things I could work on. Like I said this sound was designed for a linear trailer, where the mix needs to be perfect for the context. But in an actual gameplay setting I would need to give the weapon more low end bass frequencies, especially to the charging section to emphasise the weight and destructive power of the laser that is being fired from the sky.
