the farewell letter
Subhoiem,
If you are reading this, then I have returned home. My father has recalled me, and I so must go.
What you have done… I do not see how I could remain even if I defied my father. What hurts even more is that you think I betrayed you. I have not. Not once did I inform on you. I could have done, for the sake of your people. For the sake of your family. But what good would that have done? They would never believe that Setum’s youngest son could massacre his own kin. All for the sake of power and revenge.
And in doing so, you have lost me.
Ciardha would never have condoned what you have done. And neither can I. I pray remorse comes swiftly.
Perhaps one day, centuries from now, we will meet again. But you have broken our bond with this. My love for you remains, yet that is no longer enough.
It could have been. I wish it was.
I hope, one day, that we are better men. We will not see that day soon, and I know I will not see it with you at my side.
Oh, Subhoiem. I loved you, and now it haunts me.
Will it haunt you?
- D

🔙   //   push  my  muse  against  a  wall . (poor Subby, but we know he likes it UwU)
"Have the decency to be sure we are truly alone, before you act on your... your degeneracy." As far as protests went, it was lack lustre on Subhoiem's part.
They were in an Unseelie Court, far from the home of the puritanical or chaste, public displays were hardly unheard of and their current position was incredibly tame.
That was Subhoiem, though. Mountains out of molehills.

starter for @alaricseer
As soon as Lilé had uttered the name of her adoptive father, Deorsa’s mask had almost cracked. There was very little that could rattle him these days, long-lived as he was. And yet, that name, that damn name.
He had gone cold. He remembered all too well, and often wished he didn’t. It was eons ago. It was a name he hadn’t heard in countless lifetimes. One he thought he’d buried.
Yet it stirred a painful rage in him, and after a mere week, he could no longer ignore the desire to tear Subhoiem apart.
And so Deorsa had left his court, slipped between realms as easily as a child might laugh. He cloaked himself from view, travelling unseen. It was evening when a raven with one black eye, one silver, landed on the open windowsill of the Unseelie King’s study.
For a moment he genuinely considered snapping Subhoiem’s neck as the younger king sat there. That desire for vengeance swelled, and Deorsa forced himself to ignore it, placated by seeing the wild look In Subhoiem’s eyes, that raging grief.
Good.
“I should have known it was you,” said the raven, voice icy as he gazed at Subhoiem. “It would seem that I judged you too kindly to believe your pettiness would never extend to an innocent child.”
The raven vanished, only for Deorsa to appear before Subhoiem in elegant black robes, his own shadows hissing and writhing. Were it anyone else, his piercing gaze would have pinned his opponent to the wall.
But this was Subhoiem, son of King Setum. And they had far too much history between them for either to back down.

⚠️ - Lilé for giving her poor dear father early gray hair with her antics & love life
send me a ⚠️ with a reason my muse should be shamed (e.g. “hangs toilet paper backward”) and I can only confirm or deny
“You say that as if we don’t know how my father values his appearance, and would probably enjoy the gravitas grey hair gives him.”
[ooc: also - HER love life? we both know who has the messier love life here 👀]

"What area of my knowledge do you find lacking now?"

“I wonder, would you make deals with devils to protect your kingdom?” (Deorsa lmao pls)
"You mean demons in the literary sense, surely?"
Subhoiem liked to pick at Deorsa's words, just as much as his friend liked to spin complicated webs with them. It rarely accomplished anything productive, aside from the satisfaction of evading the intent of the questions.
At the moment, only half his attention was on the other man, the other devoted to the young hound he was training.
"I have a hard time believing the other sort are real. I have never seen one." That was hardly proof, as the youngest son of his line Subhoiem had never left his fathers court, let alone Faerie. "Unless this is where you reveal that you have been one this entire time- I might believe that."

“how long have you been awake?” (maybe Deorsa and Subhoiem had angry reunion sex :))) )
from here x
"Long enough."
Subhoiem remained as he was, laying on his back to stare unseeingly at the carved testers of his bed. Distantly, he wondered at the confusion of his Court, unable to explain what they felt from their monarch during his hours with Deorsa. He was at a similar loss, having indulged in the very thing he had often rebuked Alaric for, over the years.
"Are you pleased with yourself? Your sleep appeared sound enough to suggest it." Like a cat after cream, Subhoiem had almost disturbed Deorsa for that alone.

“Subhoiem.” Deorsa’s voice was soft, laced with concern as he watched his friend’s posture from behind. “Are you upset I must leave? You know I would stay if I could. But I cannot ignore when my father summons me back. Just as you cannot disregard yours.”
//because why not have some young lovers angst :))
The problem with being a youngest sibling, even a royal, was that he got used to going unnoticed. This meant that Subhoiem had little practice at hiding his moods, a fact made worse by his interest in Deorsa.
"Why does he allow you to come at all?" It wasnt the right question, not even close, but he was sulking. "Would you? Stay?"

The Rowan Man had stationed himself, pointedly, at the border of Deorsa's territory. Close enough to be noticed, without crossing any boundaries.
Usually Subhoiem's errands annoyed him, but rarely an unintentional bit of interest arrived. On those occasions, Rowan almost enjoyed his work.
"It has been a long time, Kingling."
Deorsa felt the Rowan Man’s presence almost before the man arrived. It was a presence that was unsettling even to a monarch, and not one Deorsa had felt for centuries. Yet here Rowan was. Right at the edge of Dark territory.
Of course.
The monarch of shadows appeared mere feet away from the embodiment of the rowan trees, older, wiser, but no less familiar with the Rowan Man.
“You should not be here, Rowan,” he replied, and there was neither warning nor threat. Only simple fact. “This is not his demesne… and you are oddly far from his grasp. I would ask if you had somehow broken the oath which binds you, but your presence here could only be because of him.”
Never one to shy away from hospitality when needed, two glasses of wine appeared, one in Deorsa’s hand, the other in front of Rowan. The Dark King took a long, steady sip - he would never poison anyone, he viewed that as cowardice - eyes never leaving his guest’s own. And then he lowered the glass, voice even.
“So. Tell me. Why did he send you?”

“Kiss me.” //younger Deorsa bc why not wheee
"I am not sure-" Subhoiem stopped himself, swallowing the insecurity of his reply.
Maybe it was because Ciardha had teased him the day before about being 'decidedly against fun', or because they were beyond the palace walls and that always made him braver, but he did as asked.
Knowing he was still clumsy, taking the risk of being mocked for it, because it was Deorsa who asked it of him.

☁ for a fight to turn into a kiss and/or sex (because of course I’d send this in for Subhoiem and Deorsa)
"It is not the same as just visiting another of the Unseelie Courts. They might be separately ruled, but where it matters we would be aligned. Seelie are nothing like us, it would be-"
Silenced mid speech by a kiss, Subhoiem froze. Confusion and irritation warred, a reaction he was sure Deorsa intended, or at least anticipated, the ass. Had he not been so busy pacing and orating, the prince might have seen his friend approach.
"You cannot just do that every time you tire of a conversation." Subhoiem complained, though he made no move to put space between them.

The funny thing is, sometimes I look at Subhoiem and Deorsa and I realise that in another life, they could almost be friends.

Alaric I think Subhoiem might be a bit upset if you fell into bed with Deorsa 🤔
"If he found out about it. I certainly wouldn't tell him, and most who value their skin wouldn't either."

ngl I really wanna see Subhoiem and Deorsa meet for the first time :))) would subby attack him?
I cant imagine it going well, thats for sure 😬 no, subby would have to be pushed to go that far. As much as he'd maybe like to, a fight with another regent isnt something to take lightly, and would involve his people as well
