It's 10 o'clock. Are we not on? We're supposed to be Tuesday at 10 every week. We've been moved—we're Wednesday at 10. Are we Wednesdays at 10 from now on? No, we're off next week and on for the following two Wednesdays. What about next year? Best to keep checking in. BOSTON LEGAL (2004-2008)

Suits fans, I have not seen much of your show, however the draw appears to be morally ambiguous lawyers, interpersonal office drama, and homoerotic subtext. If this is the case, may I present
✨BOSTON LEGAL✨
It ran from 2004-2008 (5 seasons) it’s technically a spin off of The Practice but you do not need to know ANYTHING about that show to watch Boston Legal.
The revolving cast of Main Lawyers are varying degrees of morally ambiguous, many of them commit crimes at some point. There’s so much fucking office drama and 90% of it is actually engaging. And while there is A Lot of homoerotic subtext, there’s also a decent amount of homoerotic text. “I love you” and “you’re the most important person in my life” and “we’re sleeping together” and “will you marry me?” type homoerotic text.
^^ these quotes are all canon, and are between the Main Character and his best friend/mentor/life partner/the man who hired him when no one else would/the proposal is not a joke they get married in the season 5 finale.
I’m not kidding Boston Legal is like. THE best rep of a QPR I’ve even seen on television.
It’s also fun and goofy, has some great dialogue on living and aging and how people respond to terminal diagnoses, and a really interesting time capsule into early 2000’s American politics.
It also has NO CURRENT FANDOM! (other than me). And since Suits appears to be its closest cousin in television that does have fandom i’m very politely beseeching that some of you jump ship to one of the other deranged lawyer shows.
Tumblr media
This is Alan! Main character. Main lawyer guy. He’s funny and irreverent, does whatever he can to protect the disenfranchised and at one point he beats up a man for committing elder abuse.
Tumblr media
This is Denny! Denny Crane. He’s a named partner at the firm (Crane, Poole and Schmitt). He’s also Alan’s soulmate, and a republican which is so that the more liberal Alan can debate him, usually on The Issue Of The Episode. He also has early stage alzheimers, which develops over the course of the show. And yes, him and Alan are the most important relationship of the show. And they do get married in the finale. (Yes that’s William Shatner).
Tumblr media
This is Shirley!!! In Crane Poole and Schmitt, she’s Schmitt. She’s one of the most competent lawyers at the firm, and some of the best “women over 25 are hot and desirable” writing I’ve ever seen. (Most of the other main characters on the show are legitimately attracted to her, and it’s never treated as a joke. And she’s dated a lot of different men over her life and the narrative doesn’t slut shame her for it - the characters that occasionally do are always framed as In The Wrong.) she is very much The Voice of Reason to a lot of Alan and Denny’s antics.
There’s also a vibrant cast of partners, associates, assistants, clients, judges, exes, and cameos.
(Content Warning for This Was Written In 2004 And Some Things May Have Aged Poorly.)
Please dear god someone take the bait and watch this the cases are interesting the characters are funny I need the fandom to be more than Just Me.
Is there anything else I can add?
Alan tells the Supreme Court to go fuck itself in two seperate episodes. (There’s a lot of other stuff send me an ask if you want more Boston Legal is the best propaganda I fucking love this show)
Tumblr media
Happy viewing! (It’s on Disney+. Or wherever you get your shows.)

the balcony bromance shows of the 2000s: some notes
(boston legal, 5 seasons, 2004-08 / house md, 8 seasons, 2004-12)
you will wonder, how do these guys keep their jobs i mean seriously, in many episodes
there is a balcony where the two male main characters + coworkers hang out + have homoerotic moments
the younger man is played by an actor who was a very beautiful boy in an iconic 1980s movie; said movie will be referenced by name in an episode
the older man is played by an actor best known for another iconic role like say maybe a useless foppish British gentleman or a starship captain; this role will outstrip it
candace bergen appears, delivers killer put-downs
john larroquette appears, is john larroquette
moderate drinking
copious drinking
many many beautiful women and attractive men will come and go in the cast, sometimes without explanation; the two guys will be there for all of it, come hell or high water
the guys in question love women, love them love them love them, one of them has been married multiple times, the other is a slut with one dark haunting woman behind him, but they will nevertheless end up together in a life-changing situation when the series finishes
someone has a sex doll and is overly fond of her
character gets away with murder
character gets away with malpractice
someone says ‘lock and load’ while wielding a weapon in the workplace (water pistols count shut up)
one of the actors involved pretends there is no homoeroticism whatsoever; has absolutely never played one half of an iconic queer-coded couple ever before nope nope nope
smoking cigars, phallically
meredith hope eaton appears + does some groundbreaking stuff on representing characters with dwarfism
jail time
character sees psychiatrist played by someone about to become best known for iconic comedy role rather than previous serious roles (sue sylvester, captain holt)
autistic characters that main characters understand in ways that others don’t, for what are obvious reasons to 2020s viewers
the Only Sane Woman has a thing for one of the guys and lets them away with more than is reasonable given her position of responsibility
epic, destructive jealousy and meddling when your best boy friend starts hanging out with someone else
character says something insanely un-PC and/or downright offensive to someone, then makes life better for same someone using their mad professional skillz
you will wonder, but seriously are these guys sleeping together because that would make this plot moderately less insane, often
you will never wonder, do these guys love each other; the show doesn't work if they don't

Alan Shore and Denny Crane Boston Legal | Season Four | Episode Six The Object of My Affection
Sitting with Denny on their customary balcony at Crane, Poole & Schmidt, Alan takes a sip of his drink.  Denny, holding his own drink and cigar, turns his face toward Alan, but doesn’t look at him.
Denny: "I am not over."
Alan looks at Denny, while Denny looks away
Denny, softly: "I'm sick of people thinking I'm over."
He fidgets with his cigar.  Alan regards him for a beat, then raises his eyebrows and looks away as he speaks.
Alan: "I know you're not over."
Denny finally looks at him.
Alan: "As far as I'm concerned, Denny, you've never been more now."
Denny is still looking at him.
Denny, softly: "Thank you."
He smiles at Alan, then looks away.
Alan, purposefully shifting the tone: "I read another study—"
Denny, lifting his drink to his lips: "Here we go."
Alan, as Denny takes a drink: "Talked about how men sometimes seek younger female partners as a way of staying younger themselves."
He looks at Denny.
Denny, chuckling and smiling at Alan, genuinely amused: "That surprises you?"
Alan, rolling his eyes slightly and gesturing with his left hand, pointing vaguely in Denny's direction: "No, but it went on to say that sometimes they seek out younger male friends for the same reason."
As he finishes his sentence, he cocks his head to the side and meets Denny's gaze with a half-smile that doesn't conceal his frown.
Denny, surprised and delighted: "You're insecure!"
He points at Alan with the hand holding his drink.
Alan, scoffing and shaking his head: "No."
Denny, still pointing: "Yes, you are."
Alan shakes his head a little and breaks eye contact.
Alan: "Well, sometimes I wonder if we'd be as close if I wasn't some young thing."
Toward the end of the sentence, he meets Denny's eyes again.  Denny has lowered his hand to rest it against the arm of the chair.  He smiles at Alan, amused, and huffs out a small laugh.
Denny: "Alan..."
Alan is looking at him with clear affection.
Denny, shaking his head: "First of all, you're no spring chicken.  And second..."
Alan nods his head a little, waiting for him to finish.
Denny: "Forget it."
He shakes his head and looks away.
Alan: "What?"
Denny, shaking his head: "No, I said forget it."
Alan: "You were about to say something."
His left hand gestures toward Denny.
Denny, shaking his head: "No, I wasn't."
Alan, looking away in exasperation: "Denny..."
Denny, raising his voice slightly and looking over at Alan: "I wasn't, damn it."
Alan looks at him.
Alan: "Well, then finish the sentence."
He gestures with his left hand again.  There is a moment where Denny's eyes look panicked.
Alan: "'Second...'  'Second,' what?"
Alan is smiling at Denny fondly, raising his eyebrows in expectation.  Denny looks away and takes a breath.
Denny, softly: "Second..."
The struggle is clear on his face.  He shifts in his chair, looking over at Alan, who looks back at him expectantly.
It takes Denny a few moments, looking into Alan's eyes, to say the words.
Denny: "I love you."
His face is serious.  Alan looks surprised, but holds his gaze.
Denny, looking away from him for a moment, face still serious: "And it has nothing to do with your youth."
He looks back at Alan, allowing the words to settle between them.
They hold each other's gaze.

William Shatner’s best role isn’t Captain Kirk or TJ Hooker
It’s Denny Crane in Boston Legal. One of the best dramas ever. It’s funny, serious, ridiculous and also never boring
If you have never seen this show I urge you to do so at once

Shirley and Paul are the co-founders of the “I had a torrid affair with Denny Crane and all I got was this broken heart and a lifetime of sexual tension with my friend” club. They are waiting patiently for Alan to become an eligible member.
