Deltarune Chapter 2 Replay Review

In the past I've talked about Deltarune Chapter 2 in little pieces, but never gave a full in-depth review on it. After recently revisiting the chapter for the first time in months--or even years--I think it's time I actually put out a more comprehensive, thought-out post regarding my feelings on the chapter as a whole.

If you know me at all, you'll be aware that I greatly prefer Chapter 1 over Chapter 2. I always praise Chapter 1 whenever I can and sometimes might bash Chapter 2 as being the lesser of the two. And today we will see if my opinion on it has improved, stayed the same, or gotten worse.

I'll be going over the bad things first to get the negativity out of the way, move on to the good stuff, and finally end with the points I don't have strong opinions on. Please keep in mind that this is all my own opinion, and you are free to have a different one. Without further ado, here we go!

Part 1: The Bad

Queen. I've admittedly never been a major fan of Queen and never understood the hype around her. And unfortunately, a couple of the problems I always had with her have only become more accentuated and pronounced in my recent playthrough. I still find her voice annoying as always, arguably even more so. And she still does appear a bit too often for my taste. However, these are the only major issues I have with Queen as a character. I find nothing else about her inherently negative or frustrating, and I'll get into the good aspects of Queen later.

Noelle. This is going to make some of you upset I'm sure, but I still don't really like Noelle. I never did, and it's unlikely I ever will. She shares the same issue Queen does: she appears too often in the chapter. I understand that as more chapters are released, more characters will be introduced and take center stage, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, Noelle being one of those characters was, and still is, not my cup of tea. There are some things I do like about Noelle too, and I'll also get into that later.

The general tone of the chapter. One thing I really liked in Chapter 1 was how it felt a lot more serious in its tone. Yes, there were silly moments--need I bring up Lancer?--but there was always this sense of unease I felt. Of something threatening awaiting me. Chapter 1 knew what it wanted to accomplish in its tone from the get-go and did an excellent job at building suspense little by little. But with Chapter 2, I never really felt that. Everything felt silly all the way through, and the actual villain wasn't threatening until the very end. That moment when Queen controlled Berdly came out of nowhere and nothing built up to her battle. Everything just felt messier, like the chapter itself didn't know what it was doing. Yes, there was a plot, but the tone was having an identity crisis.

Part 2: The Good

Queen, again. There are some aspects I do like about Queen. As messy as it felt, her controlling Berdly was a decent surprise and had me thinking things were finally going to get intense. I also like Queen's bond with Noelle and how she genuinely wants to protect her, even if Noelle doesn't see it that way. It gives Queen some depth, and that's always nice to see.

Noelle, again. There are also a few things I like about Noelle. I think her overall personality is pretty good, and her background and history with other characters is very intriguing to me. I also appreciate how she befriends Susie by the end. It's always nice seeing Susie connect with more people.

Berdly. In the past I've mentioned how I always appreciated Berdly for who he was as a character, but never paid much mind to him. But after playing Chapter 2 for the first time in forever, I am pleased to announce that I like him a lot more now! Berdly was a major saving grace in the chapter for me. Berdly felt a lot like the Lancer of Chapter 2 in terms of comedy and general charm, and I found myself laughing at his lines quite a lot. His personality, while definitely needing a bit of personal improvement, is very unique and helps create some hilarious scenes. His design is very nice too, and I think he's a great addition to the game and its continual story.

Spamton. For a long time, I felt the same opinion with Spamton as I did with some other characters: too many people like him, therefore he must be overrated. As time went on, my opinion on Spamton slowly started to change and improve. And after my playthrough, I absolutely understand the hype. Spamton is honestly one of the most unique characters Toby Fox has ever created. Everything about him is great, from both his regular and NEO designs to his voice/dialogue to his backstory and everything in between. You genuinely feel bad for him, but know he needs to be stopped. Everything just fits so well, and I'm very glad I gave Spamton a second chance. I'll probably always like Jevil more--speaking of which, Jevil and Spamton lore must be given at somepoint--but I'll always have a soft spot for good ol' Spamton.

Chapter 1 characters. Even though Chapter 2 is primarily consisted of new characters, Darkners from Chapter 1 still show up at the beginning. I will admit I was very bummed out when both Lancer and Rouxls Kaard turned into stone, but I was able to find other things to enjoy about the chapter. As more chapters release, it'll be more difficult for Toby Fox to fit in characters from all chapters, though knowing him, I'm sure he'll be able to find a decent balance.

Part 3: The Indifferent

The theme. I've always been a fan of sci-fi and futuristic themes, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Chapter 2 was this exact theme. It felt strange, considering this genre/theme isn't something Toby Fox is known for, but I still think it was decent. However, I don't think it's great. I personally believe Chapter 1 had better world-building and overall design. This isn't to say Chapter 2 is worse by any means. It just doesn't resonate as strongly for me as Chapter 1's fantastical, card-centric theme did.

The length. I know this is going to sound odd, but I think Chapter 2 is a bit too long. I always thought longer was better, but after playing Chapter 2 again, I realize that's not always the case. Yes, we get more world-building and character dynamics, but the plot suffers. Take Chapter 1 as an example. Yes, it's shorter than Chapter 2, but character dynamics, world-building, and a cohesive, appropriately-lengthened plot were all given in the perfect amount. With Chapter 2, so much time is spent wandering around and solving puzzles while not moving anywhere plot-wise. I was initially going to put this point in the negatives section, but decided against it as there are some positives to a longer chapter. I just think it could have been handled better.

Queen, yet again. There is one aspect of Queen I wanted to put here, and that is her status as a villain. For a long time I always condemned Queen for being a weak villain, and I still feel that way to a degree. However, I do realize that villains can come in multiple forms. You have your seemingly purely villainous foe in the form of Spade King, though I personally believe he'll become an understandable villain by the end and get a redemption arc. But not all villains necessarily need to be one-dimensional. I think adding different types of villains is good, even if it's not something I personally enjoy. Because of this, I think Queen's status as a villain is all right. Not too great, and also not something I care for too much, but certainly has its own place and charm for some.

Well, that's it! These are all the major things I wanted to go over and cover in my review. I'm sure there are more minor things I could add, but I really wanted to focus on the stronger, more important things. I'm sure some of this is relatively controversial, but I'm used to that by now :P. Now, for the reveal on whether or not I like Chapter 2 more, less, or if my opinion has stayed the same. Drumroll, please...

YES! I do like Chapter 2 more than I used to. It's not by a major amount--I still think Chapter 1 is superior in multiple ways--but Chapter 2 is NOT as bad as I initially thought. Congratulations Chapter 2, you earn a medal :).

The slippers are comfy. The outside is like, you know when a super soft thing gets washed a few times? That's how it feels.

I'm kinda glad I have two of these shirts because I love this. I'm actually wearing a different Undertale shirt today.

The eye masks are pretty silly. I'll have to see ow they hold up against my rotisserie chicken sleeping style.

And here's the blanket! It's huge. I don't like the texture but that's just me. I still love all the detail put into it.

I just finished: Deltarune Chapter 2!

It took me a loooooonnng time to get around to playing this, though perhaps it gave me a bit of distance to get a better feel for the game.

I played chapter 1 almost as soon as it was released, and at the time it really confused me - hot just because it originally purported to be a virus, but because I didn't really understand what it was going for: was this an Undertale sequel or not? Why are there Undertale characters here? Why does it seem to be okay to kill the enemies in this one?

Looking at Chapter 2 now I can see that it is a very distinct thing from Undertale, and fans of one could very easily not be fans of the other. In many ways Deltarune was what I expected Undertale to be before it came out, a much lengthier game with all kinds of puzzles to get around having to kill people. More of a traditional RPG experience, which I imagine possibly is what Fox wanted - and now with the funds and time to make it, is making slowly in parts with Deltarune. However - even if there are only 2 parts (out of seven, I think?) out, the games combined make a far lengthier game than Undertale was, which - unless you went for genocide - only took about 3hrs to beat.

Deltrarune doesn't seem to want to do anything super flashy, with Metanarratives and big twists like Undertale did - which is probably a very good choice, considering nothing is likely to stand up to the first time. This isn't to say it doesn't have anything like that, but the base of the game is just a good RPG - the world buidling is good, the characters are good, the puzzles and 'combat' are just good, not in some amazing new way, but they are GOOD.

I look forward to Chapter 3, and I expect I will feel very similar about to how I feel about this one and Chapter 1.

Alright you said theories were a go. So like, here's my theory. It's been worming it's way around my head and I talked about it before on my tumblr so you might have passed by it It's about Alphys - I think she'll be way more important than we are assuming currently. In fact, my theory is that she is The Knight. See, first of all, we know Deltarune characters "Mirror" their halves from Undertale; it is essentially a parallel world with similar ideas remixed. And, in Undertale, Alphys had the pretense of being someone generally helpful to you, and kind of an otaku afraid to handle the world. But in reality she is someone rather desperate for validation due to some serious mistakes she has made in the past, is actually a super brilliant scientist delving into research on Determination, has followed and carried on Gaster's experiments, and has been watching you from the beginning through her cameras and who is leading you along through the phone for her own purposes. In Deltarune? Right now she's your nerdy teacher who no one takes too seriously. But what if the rest is all also true? Follow me on this, through the events. In Chapter 1, we come to class and are told to form into groups. Then Susie comes, and so - despite Noelle asking otherwise - Alphys forms us into a group for the school project. Then, again despite Noelle's protests otherwise, Alphys sends us to get chalk from the cabinet. So Kris and Susie head to it, and enter, finding the cabinet now darkens the room and is strangely deep. Then, behind us, the door closes - and if you come back at the end of the chapter, it's also locked; some have said this means someone shut it behind us. So - consider that. Alphys sends us into that closet. Alphys pairs us up. And if we just disappeared, then would Alphys not still need chalk? But the class was taught anyways. No students followed us into the dark world, like you would expect if Alphys was like "Okay I think they skipped. Can someone ELSE get me chalk?" And in fact, the door was locked behind us - something a member of faculty would probably be the one to do. Then in Chapter 2, where is the second Dark World? The librarby beside the school - somewhere frequented by Alphys, who writes the anime reviews, and which is right near where she would be when that dark world opens up - she just needs to step out after class and open the fountain. And, that dark world happens to have taken in Berdly and Noelle - another pair on this school project, and a group Alphys would be certain would start their project immediately and at that lab rather than enjoy the long weekend (Since Berdly works there, and Noelle avoids doing work at home.) In Chapter 2's Dark World, we find out a few things - We learn of Spamton's backstory, and how he was guided by a voice over the phone to do things. And how he desires that robot body crafted by some lightner, which we recognize as a parallel to Mettaton Neo. Who guides us through a phone? Who made Mettaton's body? And who gave us the Shoot mode, even? All of that was Alphys. Then we learn about the Queen, who seems uninformed of the intricacies of Determination, unlike Ralsei, but knows full well that the creation of a Dark Fountain is caused by striking the earth with enough of it. This creates a fountain. If the formation of Dark Worlds comes from Determination - Who would be able to make them? Perhaps someone who has researched that kind of thing - someone like Alphys. But the obvious hole - Alphys certainly doesn't act like she knows, does she? She says some stuff which seems to contradict this. Except... Well, that's not actually a contradiction. Because she's a known liar, and can regularly lie to our faces and does so through her chapter of Undertale. If we go south with the Trash Orb, we can even see her lying about us to Toriel - and just like in Undertale, she is far less comfortable and far more flustered with praise than she is about deceiving her. Alphys is VERY comfortable with deceiving others - At one point she even says the police in the town are just eye candy, which suddenly becomes a rather suspicious line if you think she is behind all the Dark World stuff. And, lets talk motive - Why is the Knight working toward the end of the world? Well... What if they're not? Alphys isn't all-knowing about Determination - she's a scientist, or scholar now, researching it. If opening these fountains is not actually a malicious plan to end the world, but a less unethical (but still unethical) series of experiments to see their potential and how her students interact with them? Suddenly things start to fall into place. Why is only one dark fountain opening a day? Because she's tossing one pair in at a time. Why would anyone open dark fountains? To try to understand Determination. Heck - why is the game framed as an experimental survey program? It very well may be part of a larger determination experiment. You start to see her through this lens, and a lot of her dialogue becomes kind of weird. When you talk to her in front of the police station, why does she chuckle when asking about your project? Why is she so freaked out when you tall her you went to the Librarby? What exactly happened with the police to make her crash her bike? Why does she consistently ignore Noelle's requests? These all have innocuous answers - but is that all they are? And, yeah. That is the theory which has absorbed my mind

Deltarune Will Be Available For Purchase When Chapter 4 Is Done, Chapter 5 To Arrive Later

Developer Toby Fox followed up their 2015 critically acclaimed and fan-favorite 2D RPG Undertale with Deltarune Chapter 1 in 2018. This chapter was the first in what we’d later learn is a five-chapter top-down RPG with puzzles, bullet hell sequences, and Final Fantasy-inspired combat, and Chapter 1 was released for free. Fox dropped Chapter 2 in 2021 in a surprise announcement, and now, players patiently await the release of Chapter 3. Today, more than two years later, Fox has revealed an updated plan for their Deltarune release strategy.

With Chapter 3 nearing completion, Fox plans to finish Chapter 4 and release Deltarune as a purchaseable product. And following that, development on Chapter 5 will continue and hit the game when it’s ready. To help with this, Fox has hired a producer “whose entire job it will be to speed up the overall game development for future chapters,” according to a new statement released.

“So, now that Chapter 3 is nearing completion…I think it’s a good time to re-discuss how we will release Deltarune for purchase. My original plan was to release Chapter 3, 4, and 5 together. However, the finish line of Chapter 5 is still pretty far off…and I don’t think anybody really wants to wait that long to release anything. Especially me. 

So, new strategy: No more waiting for Chapter 5. Instead, we are going to focus on putting Deltarune out for purchase once we finish Chapter 4. That should make everything a bit more reasonable! Chapter 4 already has a very substantial amount of cutscenes and enemy work done. Also, I’ve hired a new producer whose entire job it will be to speed up the overall game development for future chapters. So, I feel very optimistic about the next steps of this project. 

That being said though, I think I’m going to pause on more detailed development updates for now. Instead, I’ll just let you guys know if the development is getting close to completion, or if something funny happens.” 

Elsewhere in the update, Fox says Chapter 3 took a lot of trial and error to figure out how it would work but that with Chapter 4, “I already feel very confident about how we can progress.” They also note that people on the team are already transitioning back into working on Chapter 4 and that everybody is excited to work on that part of Deltarune.

Snowgrave consequences

Ok since Deltarune chapter 3 is close to completion and after reviewing the Snowgrave route something has been bothering me about the ending of that and what will happen in chapter 3. What happens to Noelle and Berdly? If anyone forgot if you do the Snowgrave route then Noelle freezes everyone in cyber city along with Berdly when we reach the end of chapter 2 Berdly doesn’t wake up even after Noelle is concerned about him. So I’ve been wondering what the fans have been thinking about what will happen to Noelle and Berdly in chapter 3 will Berdly end up in the hospital or will something even more dire happen to him and if he does how will Noelle react to two people she loves being in the hospital as well as sensing something is wrong with Kris. This has been killing me to know and I wanna hear others predictions of what will happen! :D

Last major announcement post for now! Here are a few things I want to make larger posts on in the next week or two.

First, a Nintendo IPs tier list! I have no idea why, but I've been in a bit of a Nintendo mood lately and want to do a tier list on all of their major IPs. Most of the IPs I'm not too familiar with, but I'll rank them all anyway based on my initial impressions of them. This is definitely a bit different from what I usually do, so if you want to opt out of seeing this post, filter the tag "ntl", which stands for Nintendo Tier List for those curious :P.

Second, a more thorough--but still rambly--Deltarune Chapter 2 review. I recently played the second chapter again during my hiatus and oh boy, I have a LOT to say about it, both good and bad.

Thirdly, I really want to make character-gushing posts on Rouxls Kaard, Jevil, and Susie. I haven't decided if I'll type the post purely on Tumblr or if I'll link a PDF, but I really want to do this. I still love these characters as much as I did previously, arguably even more so, and want to give them all their own time to shine.

Relating to the third thing, I do wholeheartedly want to refine that ancient post I did about Spade King where I mentioned why I like him and criticized reasons others don't. I really want to go more in-depth on that, especially on why I like him so much.

And finally, a bit of a smaller thing, but I want to refine that Deltarune Chapter 1 & 2 tier list I made quite a while ago. My opinions have swayed on multiple characters. Some have moved up, others have moved down, and some have even moved a tier or two.

Just wanted to get this out there! Hopefully I can actually deliver on all of these, and hopefully they're a fun read :)!

First Round Review:

So I went about a week after the anniversary, thinking that it would've calmed down just a little. If the line wrapping around the building was any indication how much it did not calm down...dunno what is.

I went with my sister and her bf (as a belated bday present to me), and none of us had eaten at that time, so we decided to leave and come back. Which was both an okay decision and possibly kind of stupid. The line was shorter when we got back, but it was still long.

In fact...we waited in line for 4 hours.

While in line, there was some awesome, albeit faded, chalk drawings everywhere! picsincoming

It's so cool to see the talent in this fandom, and how strong it is still 7 years later. I mean, had no doubt if the battle for tumblr sexyman was anything to go by, but it's still nice to see!

Anywho...

The 3 of us are introverts, so you can imagine the amount of social battery depletion we had waiting in that line for that long. my lils sis & her bf didn't have to but they did & they are insane for doing that but i'm thankful too Especially with some of the conversations going on around us.

Sis' bf did ask a lot of questions about the game, wanting to understand the reason why I wanted to go to this little collab. So that was fun. Got to gush about one of my favorite games. While dead on my feet. And it was actually kind of funny seeing him get excited about us finally getting to the door 4 hours later.

So how was the inside? Was it amazing? Spectacular? Very Undertale?

Ehhhhhh....

No.

If you waited 4 hours, or sometimes even longer, for nothing but the drinks, food, merch, and cardboard cutouts of some of the characters whilst expecting something really cool...you're likely gonna be disappointed.

The place does look really cool on the inside! I mean, check out this kick ass stained glass!

It's really nice in there, and honestly, I kinda want to go back when it isn't doing the collab to see how it is normally! They had so many references to other video games and other fantasy franchises! It's such a cool and cute little place!

But, as an Undertale collab, it's kind of...meh. So many people definitely would not think this was worth a long wait, probably getting their hopes up that it would be something absolutely spectacular.

Now I myself wasn't way too upset. Been in fandom for a long time, and learned long ago to never get my hopes up. But I won't lie, I was expecting a little more with the decorations and the cutouts is my biggest gripe. atleastwithreview1

But hey! They had a game going on! Seems to be different every time from other posts I've seen. When we were there, we had Deltarune Chapter 2!

Now...onto the food and drinks.

There was no food.

They ran out.

Not a huge surprise, really. It's definitely a small café. They were 150% not prepared for the full force of the Undertale fandom. If I was in the shoes of the workers, I would be so overwhelmed. The fact that they are handling it as well as they can and are all so sweet (some even visibly excited about all this or wearing merch) is absolutely amazing. They deserve raises for dealing with the chaos.

As for the drinks? Well, they ran out of the Sans Soda. Shocker there. Everyone wants to try the tumblr sexyman's drink! forthememesimsure Apparently, it's the best drink! So, sadly, I didn't get to have it. But I did get to try the other drink I wanted! The Sea Tea!

The presentation is lacking, considering how it is advertised, and that's gonna piss some people off. As a former customer service worker, I definitely didn't care. And it doesn't come with the Undyne figure. In fact, none of the drinks come with the figures that they're pictured with. So if that's something you were looking forward to, you're a tad bit out of luck.

As for the taste, I personally liked it. I don't know how to describe it exactly, but it was pretty good. My sis also got the Sea Tea, and she had the same opinion.

The sister's bf, on the other hand, got the Heats Flamesman, and he did not like it. Not really sure why. He didn't elaborate. My sis took a sip and said she liked it. It could easily just be it was more tea than any of the other flavors listed to his liking, or different taste buds. Either way, that's apparently not an unpopular opinion from other posts I've seen.

All-in-all, the experience was...so-so. But it definitely was a bit skewed due to the fact that by the time we got in there we were so exhausted that everything was...blah.

Which is why I went again.

Round Two Review:

Maybe a tad bit too early. There was barely anyone in line. Compared to when I went the first time, it was insane to see the difference! Probably because it was a weekday instead of a weekend.

Aaaaaaand new chalk drawings dropped!

This time in line, it was more quiet. But you could still tell people were excited to be here. Hell, there were more people dressed up! I saw an Asgore, a Frisk, and a Sans!

The wait was an hour this time, but that's only because I arrived, well, an hour before opening. Then after opening it was another 13 minutes to get in, just because they wanted to space out the groups going in and not crowd the door/walk areas. But once inside, I was able to enjoy the décor a little more than last time, since I wasn't exhausted as hell.

Again, I would love to come here when it isn't doing the collab. It looks so cool!

And, once again, the TV had a game going on! This time it was Deltarune Chapter 1! (another table with a solo TV had Omori on)

They actually had food this time, too! Not a whole lot, but hey! I could try food! Which I did! I got the Spider Donuts!

I've heard mixed reviews on the donuts. But I...actually liked them. I was pleasantly surprised by them! You get 3 little donuts in this little container. They definitely look like someone had to do the frosting and the webbing by hand, which I can admire. I really couldn't describe the taste exactly, just that when I bit into the first one I loved it. Might've had a little fruit flavoring? Again, not sure. But I found them to be pretty good!

The best part, however...

I GOT THE SANS SODA!

Was it as good as some people said it was?

YES.

It should not be.

It had no right to be.

But it was good.

I actually liked it a little better than the Sea Tea! It didn't really taste like cotton candy to me per se...but it was a little tart and that shit's right up my alley.

So, yes. The Sans Soda was delicious. I got the meme drink. Halleluiah!

Also got to go get merch this time! It was for pick up or delivery only, which is fine. They probably couldn't have much of it on the shelves. Or they had it on the anniversary date and ran out. Who knows.

This time, I also was able to sneak in a little self-indulgent selfie with the skelebros this time around, not feeling rushed to get in and out.

Final thoughts overall?

Personally, I enjoyed it. It definitely won't be andisnt everyone's cup of tea. My biggest gripe is still just having cut outs of the characters, but I don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Maybe this was all this small café could do. And it is a small café. Like I said earlier in this long ass post, they were not ready for the Undertale Fandom. The workers did the best they could, and they honestly did amazing all things considered. Some won't see it that way and that's fine. And some people had a terrible time. My first time honestly wasn't that great. My second time was fun! It all depends on the person and how things roll out.

Would I love to see this happen again on a much bigger scale and better preparations? Absolutely. Will it happen? Probably not. Who knows what will happen for the 8 year anniversary! Maybe something bigger! Maybe something smaller.

Whatever it is, I'll be excited regardless.

Because it's Undertale.

And it's amazing how large this indie game is all these years later.

Fnf Twlight Sparkle Concept Dusk till dawn analysis

(More just a ramble about how awesome I think this whole concept/mod is/some head cannons)

•I like the idea of pinkie being the only survivor if thr ever was an apocalypse in equestria due to her pinkie sense

•she knows that the cartoon virus isn’t actually twilight & her friends so that’s why she still is her cherry self

•Is wearing goggles/a scarf/bandages on her if the virus ever gets her she could use those on time to maybe escape
