susie is of course very capable of breaking the narrative in a very overt way but i believe noelle is just as if not more powerful. queen singles out Noelle as one who is strong, who has a lot of Determination. THE RESOLVE TO CHANGE FATE. <- that's really important not just for this post but just in general. that's how it's described in undertale and i think that's super significant. anyway back to the post

we don't have any control over where the story goes. nothing we do can steer this adventure off course - but Noelle can. She has the power to break the narrative in a more subtle way.

The weird route is very clearly meant to be reminiscent of creepypastas and playground rumors - performing a hyper-specific series of actions and if you get any of them wrong it doesn't work but if you it all correctly your party member gains a NEW SECRET SPELL that can KILL PEOPLE and one of the characters DIES PERMANENTLY and the mage LEAVES YOUR PARTY

and noelle is all about that kind of thing. finding weird secrets in the nooks and crannies of the world's code. easter eggs, creepypastas. you know?

and of course, in the weird route, what YOU do doesn't change the story, it's what you make NOELLE do.

The Bach Edition Leipzig contains some GDR recordings of major Bach works. I'm quite fond of some of the recordings despite their lack of historic instruments. Hannes Kästner's recording of the Toccata und Fuge in d-Moll BWV 565 is among the best, I've ever heard. Spectacular. It's not on Berlin Classics though, it was released through Delta Music. thinking about how kris is the ONLY one who ever gets to see the man behind the tree. you, the player don't get to see him - he's blocked by the tree. he is for kris's eyes only, every time. even in the car at the beginning of chapter 2.

it feels like the only thing that is wholly kris's, yknow? everything else in their life has been taken from them and made ours - this is the only thing that's theirs, theirs, theirs. only they will ever get to see the man behind the tree.

like a little moment of solace for them. a place where they can finally be free from your prying eyes, with a kind friend who talks to them and gives them gifts. you know? it feels like the man knows this. always staying out of our view no matter what. he waves happily at kris. we can't possibly see him doing this - it's for kris and kris alone.

oh yeah i had this heartbreaking idea for a weird route scene (like a fic or something) where noelle desperately tries to find any sign that kris is still in there somewhere, but all she finds is you, and she comes to the difficult conclusion that she must leave kris. then kris is so happy, because noelle is finally leaving and you can no longer hurt her, there's nothing you can do anymore. they're so happy that they begin to cry tears of joy. and noelle hears this as she's walking away, turns around, and realizes kris IS still in there, and comes back to them because this means they can still be helped. and kris is obviously distraught at this because she was so close to being safe. but now they can't do anything about it. anyway what do you think

that scene where you give a box of chocolates to sans is SO WEIRD TO ME!! like why can you do that?? like i get it's a joke about sans fangirls but like. it's so weird! it doesn't follow any of the established conventions of how the game should work! and this is the only time sans ever DOESN'T have a joke. like he just sits there dumbfounded for a solid fifteen seconds before he comes up with something. it's like this isn't supposed to happen. sans always has something funny to say for all of your dialogue options but this... isn't a dialogue option! it shouldn't be possible! like, it makes me feel like he knows about dialogue options and stuff or something - especially with Papyrus's line in Undertale where he says "THIS IS NORMALLY THE PART WHERE YOU EITHER AGREE OR DISAGREE, AND DEPENDING ON YOUR ANSWER, WE SAY SOMETHING GREAT IN RESPONSE." it's just so weird...

i think it's interesting that during the dungeon sequence in chapter 1, when you try to control Susie, she says "Kris? Did you say something?" or something along those lines. And, also, she can hear "Kris" telling her what to do when solving the puzzle to escape her cell as well. But both of these times, Kris is really far away from her.

What I'm proposing is that Susie can hear "our" voice, just as Noelle does - she's just able to resist it. She doesn't even realize this is anything special, she just thinks she's hearing Kris faintly from far away.

Spamton is saying here that he became the [[It burns! Ow! Stop! Help me! It burns!]] due to his communion with [[Unintelligble Laughter]]. Now, this is pretty standard stuff, he went insane (for lack of a better phrase) due to communicating with someone over the phone. I just think it's really neat how, on your first playthrough, everything Spamton says seems like just utter nonsense, but once you understand everything about him, less and less lines appear to be complete nonsense once you analyze them further. Everything he says has a meaning, you just have to be willing to dig into what he's saying.

However.

I do find it interesting that he refers to the voice on the phone as [[Unintelligble Laughter]]. Isn't that curious? What does he mean by that?

It could be a few things.

Perhaps whatever was on the phone with him was prone to laughing unintelligibly. This is the second time laughter has been referred to as somehow indecipherable in reference to a secret boss ("Jevil is laughing incomprehensibly.") despite laughter just being... laughter. How cab laughter be incomprehensible? It's not words. It carries no meaning, right?

It could just mean that the character in question is speaking, but they're laughing so hard while doing so that it's impossible to make out what they're trying to convey to you.

Perhaps whatever corrupted these characters is characterized by their unintelligible laughter? Perhaps it's FRIEND, who is at least known to laugh.

A different option.

the weird route is full of uncomfortable romantic undertones and it's great it's so disturbing and i really like it. but that gets me thinking, this is only the first chapter of it! how else is toby going to explore this theme? like what else is toby going to do?
