9-27-20, Edward builds his new grocery and gasoline station on highway 16 going to Heber Springs The Barger’s made good money on the Bud Piggott farm.  Mr. Piggott took Jimmy, Roy, and Carl to the buyers’ market with him in Benton Harbor on certain occasions.  It was educational to watch the process used in selling the farm products to wholesale buyers.  They enjoyed watching the auctioneers sell the strawberries.  The auctioneer went so fast that they never knew who was bidding or who ended up paying the most for Mr. Piggott’s load of strawberries.  Before returning to the farm, Mr. Piggott would go by the Dairy Queen and buy milk shakes for everyone.  He enjoyed doing these things with the boys.  It was like he looked upon the Barger boys as sons he never had.  Mr. Piggott and his wife rewarded their workers every Friday afternoon with a cake and ice cream social.  The ice cream and cake tasted so good after working in the hot sun all day.  The summer on the Piggott farm passed quickly.  On August 15, the Barger’s said their goodbyes to the Piggott family and headed home to Arkansas.  Mamie did not want her children to miss anymore school than necessary.  After returning home, Willie went to Grants Pass, Oregon, to live with Harvey and Darlene.  He found a job working at the sawmill where Harvey and Chester worked.  Willie turned down his scholarship to play basketball at Lyon’s College in Batesville, Arkansas, a decision he questioned many times.  Like most young men during this time, he was more interested in making money to buy his first automobile than going to college.  He figured if he had a car, he could attract about any girl he wanted.  When school broke for its annual break in the middle of September, Mamie and the children loaded the GMC and went to Leachville, to pick cotton.  It was a good year for cotton and the Barger’s made good money.  After returning home from Leachville they were able to pay off the GMC and the mortgage on the farms.  They had done well financially.  Edward was able to buy two more cows and some hogs.  He ordered one hundred baby chickens from Roade Island.  They were called Roade Island Reds.  These chickens were good layers as well as good chickens to eat.  They grew big.  On January 20, 1956, Edward purchased one acre of land from Arnold McCarty on Highway 16.   The one acre was about twelve miles north of Heber Springs.  Edward decided to retire from being a farmer and try his hand in the grocery business.  After purchasing the property on Highway 16, Edward and Mamie started construction on their store and home.  They got help from Harvey and Willie who had moved back to Arkansas from Oregon.  In the afternoons Jimmy, Roy, and Carl pitched in and helped on the house.   On May 1 they completed the house and moved in.  Mamie and the kids lived in the house only two weeks before leaving for their annual trip to Benton Harbor. To get the funds to build the house and store, Edward mortgage the old Ike Carr and Frank Murphree farms.  Mamie said, “Here we go again.”  She got so tired paying off mortgages and trucks.  Although she hated going to Benton Harbor, she knew it was necessary.  This time she was excited about her new home on highway 16.  Highway 16 was a well-traveled highway.  It was blacktopped, not like the small dirt roads leading to where they had lived in the Post Oak community.  The new home offered a new experience for the Barger family.  They were able to enjoy watching automobile traffic go up and down the road as well as meet and visit with new people when they stopped to purchase groceries from their store.  Mamie liked this much better than the isolation she felt at her home in Post Oak.  Mamie enjoyed being around people.  She was a people person and loved to talk.  She could talk to anyone about any subject.  She was a person who never met a stranger.

Network Update 12/14/17
Greetings from Superintendent Terry Bailey
The Advent of Christ totally changed the lives of Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds in the field. The angel had prophesied, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21NKJV).
Lives are still being changed as we celebrate Christmas in 2017. Last weekend, at the Christmas production at United Church in Lawrenceburg, over 20 people accepted Christ. Pastor David Morgan reported that the production ran four times with an overall attendance of 1300. First Assembly in Milan had Ebenezer Experience last weekend, and Pastor Rick Waycaster reported that 25 people were saved. It is all about changed lives. Many of our churches are having various Christmas celebrations. Whatever you are doing, give people the opportunity for salvation and rededication decisions.
Love and appreciate you much,
Pastor Terry G. Bailey
Here are promos for this weekend at Union City First Assembly (Pastor Tommy Hall) and Trinity Algood (Pastor Mike Campbell).
