Friends to Lovers

Gameboys the Series. It's no secret that Gavreel had a crush on Cairo from the beginning, but it's not something he tried to force. He was a natural flirt anyway so it was easy to play off. But he did offer Cai the friendship he needed while they both dealt with deaths in their loved ones, loneliness, and the global quarantine. They spoke on video chat all day everyday and quickly became best friends along with their #1 support Pearl. Gav promised to always be the friend Cai needed and Cai reciprocated. And when Cai realized he was in love with Gav he confessed and they grew stronger together. They have such a sweet and soft and moving love story, but were definitely friends first.

Bodyguard

KinnPorsche the Series. Porsche might be the worst bodyguard to ever exist, but hey they twisted his arm and threatened him to get him to take the job so of course he wasn't trying to be his best at first. Porsche is a natural protector though, for the ones he loves. He flew to the top of the class when he felt determined to prove himself to be a good bodyguard and he really did come in clutch for Kinn a few times. But I also just love that Kinn willingly put himself in the line of danger multiple times to protect his own bodyguard. I eat that shit up.

Love Triangle

Light on Me. This series reigns supreme for the Love Triangle trope for me. It was executed perfectly. Woo Taekyung had excellent chemistry with both Noh Shinwoo and Shin Daon. He could've ended up with either one of them and I wouldn't have been mad. I love that Taekyung had such different relationships with both of them. With Daon he was doted on and treated sweetly, he was allowed to be cute and depend on Daon. With Shinwoo there was definitely a more linear playing field between them. Taekyung was more at ease with Shinwoo because they were cohorts. Shinwoo was also painfully honest with Taekyung and I think he liked that. But Shinwoo did something that Daon did not and that was protect Taekyung. Also love that Shinwoo and Daon didn't let their crushes on Taekyung ruin their friendship. They both decide to pursue Taekyung at the same time, but promised not to get in the other's way and by the end of the series everyone was still friends, the student council was still going, and everyone was happy.

Daon nodding after this question was the most selfless thing he’s done after acting so selfish over the course of the last two episodes. Sure, he thought he was acting in a way that was helping both him and Taekyung but, ultimately, it became clear that he was trying to conserve his self image more than he was trying to help Taekyung. While his actions are not malicious and don’t come from an inherent place of harm, Taekyung was inevitably suffering.

The other remarkable thjng about this interaction is how clear and patient Daon and Shinwoo are being with one another. Shinwoo is being open about his intentions, while respecting both Daon and Taekyung’s feelings instead of engaging in a jealous fueled competition with Daon. This occurs the way it does because of how much Daon and Shinwoo actually care about Taekyung. They don’t want him to suffer anymore or put him through the stress of competing for his attention and affection.

And, at the end of the day, Shinwoo and Daon, as friends, want what is best for each other as well, even if it means sacrificing their own happiness in the hopes of maintaining a friendship with not only Taekyung but with each other.

Taekyung burns so bright to those who need someone who understands different, someone who understands what it means not to fit with others.

Taekyung's acceptance and self-love show others what they could do, how they can look at themselves and others.

That's why Shinwoo and Daon have fallen in love with Taekyung but not Nangoong.

Nangoong already loves himself and knows who is.

Shinwoo and Daon are both struggling.

Taekyung is their light in the darkness, the beacon of self-acceptance, self-love and self-understanding.

My Top Boys Love Dramas of 2021

I was gonna say top 10, but it might be more or less. IDK, but let’s talk about some of the series that made me feel the feels from beginning til the end. ALEXA PLAY THE FEELS BY TWICE! LET’S GO! This will not be in any order, I promise.

Utsukushii Kare/My Beautiful Man (Japan)

This series literally just ended like a week ago and it earned a top spot instantly. This series was equal parts frustrating and entertaining. Watching two emotionally stunted people navigate through their new feelings for each other and difficulties communicating is quite a ride.

A Tale of Thousand Stars (Thailand)

Man if I could use on word to describe ATOTS, I’d say perfect. Such an amazing series with great storytelling, an interesting otherworldly plot, loveable characters, and a beautiful blooming romance. AND DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE SOUNDTRACK. This series made me go thru the motions. I cried, I screamed, I yelled, I whooped, and I hollered. The way I was worried this series was a gonna be “the woman trapped in a man’s body” trope and it turned out to be a man learning to love himself and fall in love in the process. Like 10/10.

We Best Love: No. 1 for You and Fighting Mr. 2nd (Taiwan)

Like I can’t talk about one without tying it into the other. S1 and S2 both hold a shared space in my heart. Shi De and Shu Yi are opposites in how they handle their emotions and it shows in how reactive Shu Yi is and how methodical Shi De is. They’re both intelligent and yet seem to be idiots at times. Shi De would do absolutely anything for Shu Yi and that was a huge flaw. I was no doubt obsessed with these 2 for the better part of this year.

Lovely Writer (Thailand)

Excuse me while I cry about how much I absolutely adored this series. I was skeptical at first because of how meta it was, but gotdamn did they turn damn near every ugly trope on it’s head. They tackled so many hot and important topics. They addressed the toxicity of BL fandoms and shipping wars. The romance between Gene and Nubsib was also quite refreshing. Gene isn’t your standard type of male lead: he’s nerdy, quiet, reserved, but he’s smart, and strong, and he stands up for himself. He held people and himself accountable for things and I loved that so much. I just loved his and Sib’s dynamic and Gene is one of my absolute favorite characters of 2021.

Light on Me (Korea)

THIS IS HOW YOU DO A LOVE TRIANGLE! The way I was rooting for both Shinwoo and Daon. I didn’t care who Taekyung chose in the end. Taekyung had a strong bond with both Daon and Shinwoo. I love that their friendships stayed in tact too. Shinwoo and Daon are friends and the way they both stepped aside to let each other have a fair shot proved that. I loved seeing Namgoong be there rooting for them both as well and protecting the whole group along the way. Also they covered topics like self love, coming out, bullying, and unrequited love. Like I just loved the series so so much and the kids in that Student Council are dear to me.

To My Star (Korea)

I don’t even know how to describe this series. Cute loner chef gets forced to be roomies with equally cute talkative actor? I was expecting the series to be lighthearted but boy did it get me misty. Seo Joon was very clearly dealing with some trauma and he seemed to sort of latch on to Ji Woo who just wanted his space respected. I loved seeing Seo Joon learn about Ji Woo and I loved seeing Ji Woo take it upon himself to protect Seo Joon. They have a very modern type of love story that feels relatable and interesting to watch. Also Seo Joon calling Ji Woo a “Boomer” always sends me.

Word of Honor (China)

Technically not a BL, but we all know it’s gay as hell. Eternal Soulmates. Deception. Romance. Found family. Hella action. Beautiful set and costume. The way this series consumed my life and I’m still talking about it today. WEN KEXING AND ZHOU ZISHU INVENTED ROMANCE AND LIVING FOR FOREVER!

Honorable Mentions to:

You Make Me Dance (Korea): we love a soft loan shark and his abandoned indebted dancer boy. Another forced roommates type thing but with a more exciting dynamic.

A First Love Story/Please Tell Me So/Hold Me (Korea): Strongberry never disappoints with their short films.

Kieta Hatsukoi (Japan): We stan a good friendship square and 2 solid ships.

The Tasty Florida/My Sweet Dear (Korea): I feel like only a select few actually liked these 2 chef series. They were both sweet and soft but too short for any real development.

Be Loved in House: I Do (Taiwan): Group therapy for me. I will fight for Jin Yu Zhen and Shi Lei. Name a snugglier couple.

The Untamed/Guardian (China): they were a huge part of my life this year, but neither of them came out in 2021 so that’s why they are honorable mentions.
