What do you think makes the difference between alibrijes and normal dead (Skelton horses and those barking dogs) animals? pepita was once a living cat but in the afterlife she’s not a skeleton she’s a massive Jaguar dragon.
I think all alebrijes were once pets or significant animals in their person’s lives in life, but not all pets or significant animals become alebrijes! It’s possible that some people don’t need the extra help of a spirit guide, so their animals arrive in the LotD as skeles.
It could also be that one person takes care of a lot of animals (like someone who owns a farm or ranch or someone who breeds dogs or cats) but already has an animal that became a spirit guide, so the others arrive as skeles. Though some people like Ernesto have multiple spirit guides, so some people can certainly have more than one. It may depend on how close bond of the animal was with the person, or how much help that person would need in the afterlife.
Or, it could also be that animals have to earn their right to be spirit guides? Like how Dante didn’t get his alebrije colors until the third act of the movie.
Though I believe there’s like... actual folklore about spirit guides, though I’m not familiar with it and not really qualified to talk on that part--definitely worth looking into though.

In order: Pepita, Imelda as a skunk (’cause her hair and ‘cause kicks lol), Miguel, Héctor as a deer (’cause that’s what all the people put his fursona as), and Dante!

Was there any connection between Héctor and his alibrije in life? Life with Imelda and Pepita and Miguel and dante? Did he ever save a bat or did she hear him and Ernesto playing one night while hanging from a tree? Idk I was just wondering.
This was addressed in Leatherwing briefly!
“Hey! Just wait until you see my familia!” he said, swallowing down his anxiety as he looked back up at her. “My Coco would like you. I always told her how bats didn’t sing like birds do, but they dance in the air.”
Pizzicato gave a loud peep at that, weaving gracefully around the air up ahead of him. Some other skeletons even took notice, a few children pointing her out.
“Sí, just like that!” The crowds were getting denser now as they got closer to the Santa Cecilia gate, and he knew he would have a decent wait ahead of him. For a moment he frowned at the cluster of people ahead, but the colors of the bat were easily distracting. Shaking himself, he focused on her again. “I took her outside one night and we set out some sugar water, and sure enough, one came dancing through the sky. She loved it.”
Pizzicato did a loop-the-loop before fluttering back over to him, hooking herself onto the pouch on his belt.
“Maybe you can dance for her again, when we get there.”
Héctor would take Coco outside sometimes and show her the bats flying around. They gave one particular bat a treat, and said bat remembered it, haha.
