I’ve been meaning to post a comparison of Failfix Dance stylz and Fakefix for a while, but kept forgetting.
Fakefix obviouslty copied the prints from the original, but the box shape is different. My box was also busted and taped together and the doll was loose inside.
Tumblr media
to my surprise, they come with the same amount of accessories and articulations! Everything about fakefix is obviously a bit worse. Thinner more brittle plastic, webbing, incoherent accessorizing. Her bad-makeup mask was inside the box instead of on her face so they followed the gimmick but not all the way.
Tumblr media
the mask is also white. What the hell.
Tumblr media
Fakefix as a doll is also just a fucking mess. She’s like 4 different colours (torso, limbs, joints, head). Why is she doing black face too???? Her face seems to be SlayIt DJ. I don’t know what that body is. Her shoe size seems to match barbie.
Dance Stylz has a gorgeous semi-translucent skin. It’s very subtle.
Tumblr media
Dance Stylz has such beautiful thick hair! The only problem is that one of her braid is coming undone and I don’t expect to be able to fix that given *my* skills.
Fakefix is bald. instead of microbraids, she has loose waves that didn’t go down during washing, for better or for worse.
Tumblr media
Fakefix is such a mixed bag. I expect cheap plastic and balding from knockoffs, so that’s.........fine.
They made sure she had the right amount of accessories and hit a lot of the same marks as the real dolls (articulated, insert eyes, etc.), but couldn’t be bothered to match her face and her body at all. Priorities.
Overall, she’s hideous.
Failfix dolls are beautiful and amazing and I recommend them though 💞

On Eastern dramas vs Western dramas
Part 2: On Theatricality and how it transfers into Chinese/Eastern Dramas and Cinema
Part 1   Part 2
Here, I reference a fantastic article from the Asian Theatre Journal, 2008.
So to recap, the problem I’m exploring is this: Why do some East Asian dramas/movies look so over the top? Overacted? Overemotional? Why is it not more realistic?
My answer is in part 1, on the concept of mo, which is the traditional Chinese thought that emotional revelation is more important than accurate realistic depictions in art. Western audiences are more used to plot-heavy, realistic depictions of dramas, whereas traditional Chinese audiences are used to the opposite. They find the plot not so important, but focus more on the content of the work, the spirit of it, how it makes you feel.
1. How traditional Chinese drama translate into cinema/screens?
Making the jump from Beijing/Peking opera stages, or jingju, to cinema screens caused a lot of trouble.
Tumblr media
a. Production-wise, early 1900s
It was difficult to adapt the very open, 3d stage into a “realist flat screen,” which was much more advantageous to Western eyes because the camera lens was invented based on “Renaissance principles of fixed point perspectives and foreshortening.”
b. 1950s-60s
Many still tried to adopt the Beijing opera style into film, but it was still very hard because the two mediums were so contradictory. Beijing opera relied on live, grand aesthetics along with the knowledge that the important aspect of drama was emotion and internal struggle, vs film at the time was very focused on accurate “mimesis,” or imitations of real life. One such example was critics actually laughing about the adaptations because the opera actors mimicked riding a horse in the traditional style - that is, minus the horse. Film would have them ride a prop or real horses.
Eventually, many changes were made to the style to better incorporate it into film, and it still kept a lot of its original roots (i.e. makeup/grandiosity in costume, emotions, etc). Western concepts of a limited stage, and emphasis on plot and tragedy were expounded upon. And eventually you have the modern-day dramas (1970s+).
2. Japanese Noh  能 theater - Kurosawa’s Ran
Noh is a Japanese form of theater that is a dance-based dramatic work. It tells stories of supernatural beings transformed into humans and etc. One of its major notes is its very stylized conventional use of specific gestures to portray emotions. Iconic, specific masks are used to portray the roles of the actors such as the ghosts, women, deities, and demons.
Tumblr media
Akira Kurosawa’s Ran is lauded as one of the greatest films ever made. It’s a Japanese-French production heavily inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear. There are many many detailed videos on YouTube about his precise filming methods and movement aesthetics. The body language can be seen as “over-acted” if you come from a Western background. Why? Because it takes from traditional Noh theatre:
Long periods of static motion and silence, followed by an abrupt, sometimes violent change in stance. Heavy ghost-like Makeup. Highly emotive gestures, sometimes repetitive to emphasize the characteristic of a character. All very unrealistic, but that’s not the point, right? Because this also displays mo, it takes the emotive expression, the revelation of fear/action/hope to the front of the stage.
3. Japanese Kabuki theatre - acting style is also larger than life
Kabuki actors also make great effort to express themselves in highly stylzed gestures (i.e. the men play women’s roles and over-act their femininity).
One major difference between Kabuki and much of Western theatre is that kabuki actors make less of an attempt to hide the “performance” aspect of the work. They’re fully aware that they’re performing, and the audience isn’t there to get “lost in the moment.” Everything -- actors, costumes, dialogue, is larger than life. Realism is far less emphasized, the form generally favoring what is often referred to as “formalized beauty.”
One example of this is the highlight of an aragato kabuki performance: the famous mie. The mie is a dramatic pose adopted by the main (oftentimes male) character during moments of emotional intensity. (The proper phrase for this action is mie o kiru, or to "cut a mie.") Announced by the beating of wooden clappers, the actor freezes in a statuesque pose and crosses one or both eyes. Often it's preceded by a head roll. The idea is to capture the highest moments of tension into one physical gesture and to more or less hold the actor and the audience in a breathless trance. After a few seconds, the actor relaxes and the play continues. A mie can be cut in various specified positions, depending on the character and the moment. When exiting, an aragoto character may perform a roppo exit, which combines several of these poses in rapid succession, before leaving the stage.
Tumblr media
The mie pose
This is not to say that modern Japanese dramas and works directly descend from Kabuki or Noh or other theatrical traditions. But like the Chinese beijing opera, the concept of aesthetic beauty/mo, emotional revelation, these ideas all combined with Western influence and modern Western perceptions of good story-telling/acting to make up the modern Eastern dramas of today.
4. How do all of these things combine into the supposed “cheesy/corny/over-acting” of modern Eastern dramatic works?
All of these cultural roots combined with Western depictions of a modern story (i.e. Shakespearean tragedy in five parts: Exposition, Rising action, climax, falling action, and denouement, ofc there are other ones but this is the one I learned in school), I believe make up what we see today in modern Eastern dramas.
A. Acting Comedy: My specific examples are first, comedic examples from the famous 1986 Journey to the West
Tumblr media
Comedy and the feeling of happiness and joy are also very important aspects of emotional revelation. Journey to the West depicts one of the most beloved comedic characters, Sun Wukong, who goes on a journey with Tan Sanzang, a Buddhist priest, to find the sacred Buddhist texts. His exploits are highly unrealistic and highly comedic. It is one of the epitomes of the “spirit” over the “form,” the internal emotional journey over the actual realism (or unrealism) of the journey. Many of the characters exhibit over-the-top facial expressions, some expressions too subdued, and the plot can be very winding and haphazard, but that’s not the point! If you’ve been reading this far, you’ll know why. It’s about how his adventures make you, the audience, the reader, feel.
B. Acting Villainy: More modern Chinese dramas i.e. The Untamed & Word of Honor
I cannot attest to the quality of the acting nowadays, but it’s a common idea that the supporting cast of the international hit, The Untamed, was a bit weak in terms of acting. If I were to step into my Western lens, I would agree that yes, many characters over-act (i.e. Xue Yang, below):
Tumblr media
And Wen Kexing, Word of Honor:
Tumblr media
And Journey to the West, Underworld Lord:
Tumblr media
However, now with all that cultural context, I can see this choice of acting in a different light. The over-acting and depiction of villainy is over-the-top because it’s meant to inspire that emotion of (this guy is whack, like really). It’s not supposed to be realistic villainy, like how a real person would look if they were these people in real life. To judge it by a completely Western lens is doing a disservice to them I think. You could say that maybe they just can’t act well, but in a Chinese/Japanese/Eastern cultural theatrical context, their acting is actually par for course. It’s even more subdued than the traditional roots of Eastern theatrical performances actually.
This goes for many other C-dramas / Eastern dramas that have these instances of highly emotive performance. It’s a product of hundreds of years of Eastern cultural theatrical/artistic production combined with Western acting styles and cinematography.
Is it cheesy? Maybe. Is it over-acting? Could be, but what is “over-acting” vs what is “enough?” Is that not the distinction between mo and Western realistic imitation? For me, as someone who’s very used to this uniquely different style of dramatic production, I’m not too bothered by it. It, after all, makes me feel such an incredible range of emotions that the acting is just a fun, interesting perk.
Thinking that these dramatic productions were originally seen as extensions of poetry, I can see why the exaggeration is necessary to fulfill what mo means:
If I feel some intent, I must write it - it becomes a poem.
If that’s not enough, I must sing it - it becomes a song.
If even singing isn’t enough, then I sigh, and have to express by dancing - it becomes a performance.

The Christmas Party(s)
Heyyyy @b99peraltiago, I’m your secret santa! I hope you like this fic, some of the things I included that you mentioned were parallels, slow dances and the colour yellow :) Also idk where the timeline for the first part is and the title was grammatically impossible to figure out, but it does have baby Mac so...
The halls were decked, the trees were up and the 2015 99 Christmas party was in full swing.
Charles was handing out possibly hundreds of Christmas cards of him and Jason posing together, Terry and Rosa were rocking out while Gina was doing god knows what on the dancefloor, Hitchcock and Scully were being relatively not-gross, even Holt seemed to be relatively cheerful.
But one detective simply couldn’t get into the spirit of the season.
Whilst his colleagues danced wildly around him to the tune of the band, Jake unenthusiastically attempted to maintain a somewhat happy composure in spite of his misery in that moment.
All he could do was sit and watch as the woman he liked (maybe even loved), swayed in the arms of another man.
He didn’t want to sound whiny by saying it aloud, but it’d been so hard since he’d come back from being undercover to realise that Amy and Teddy were still together, especially as she’d essentially rejected his romantic-stylzes confession before he left. Really, the word “rejected” wasn’t fair – she’d been incredibly kind given the circumstances and honestly he just blamed himself for ruining the pretty decent frenemy-ship they’d had going.
Although Rosa had comforted him earlier, being the friend who knew the most about his predicament (yeah he knew fancy words), even she had eventually gone off to have fun at his insistence.
Wild fantasies of abruptly shoving Teddy aside and taking Amy in his arms (and then saving the city while the rest of the 99/the entire population of New York cheered and played the Die Hard theme followed by What A Man and lit off Christmas/Hannukah fireworks in his honour) drifted through his mind. Ok, even if that was insane, could at least have gone up to her and asked for a platonic dance. But seeing her there, with him, so happy, he felt rooted to his chair. He couldn’t complicate things for her by doing that.
Instead, he sat tapped out a rhythm onto the cold, slightly sticky floor, desperate to do anything having been sat down for almost half an hour. All he could do was fidget, whilst he daydreamed about a time far in the future where he’d be there with her.
But at the same time that would mean her and Teddy breaking up and as much as he didn’t want to admit it, he liked her so much that he didn’t want her to go through the crappiness that was a break up.
But still, he couldn’t help but think…someday…
The moment Amy and Teddy came up to him arm in arm to wish him a merry Christmas together, like a real life freakin’ greeting card, his heart shattered.
After he said goodbye to them, he left early that night and drank far too much while trying to watch Die Hard to cheer himself up, in the vague hope that he might forget the whole horrible evening.
Amy couldn’t help but watch as he left. She’d kept up a happy smile for Teddy’s sake, but she felt like she was going to lose it if she had to endure this party for much longer. It wasn’t just that she was so incredibly bored of hearing Teddy talk about the pilsners he was going to brew to bring to her parent’s house, or that she hated the song that the band were currently playing (Santa Baby – flirting with Santa? Really?). It was when she realised where Jake was that the evening really started to go downhill.
All night she’d tried to push down the ache she’d felt when she saw him sat all alone. But she knew that if she went over and comforted him, she wouldn’t want to leave his side. And how would that look to Teddy? Not that there was anything to hide from her boyfriend of course. Whatever she had felt for Jake in the past, she was definitely over it. But still… she couldn’t help but wonder…
 5 years later
Much time had passed and a lot had changed but it was a similar scene: all across New York, Christmas lights were switching on, weary shoppers stood in long lines waiting to get to perfect gifts and the 99’s 2020 Christmas party was only half an hour away.
A slow Taylor Swift song drifted from the radio into every corner of Jake and Amy’s apartment, from the album Jake had made Amy listen to until 2am. Not that she really minded, the joy on his face at the new music from his favourite artist being her main motive to stay awake.
Now, stood near to their front door, her yellow dress seemed to shimmer even as she stood with her hands on her hips.
“Jake, he can’t come with us – your mom is already coming over and a fancy party isn’t a place for a baby.”
“But look how cute he is!”, Jake protested, holding up their son, dressed up in an admittedly adorable suit and tiny bow tie.
Just then, the song switches and an expression comes onto Jake’s face that Amy knows all too well.
“Come on Ames, I know you love this one.”
Without saying a word, she rolled her eyes affectionately before taking his hand and they began to twirl around the kitchen, with Mac watching on in as much amusement as a 6 month old could express.
They soon swept their son up into the dance too, twirling him around as a more upbeat song came on. Then Jake came up with an idea he was pretty proud of as they slowed down.
“How about we ditch the party and just watch some Christmas movies? It’s never too early to introduce Mac to some of the classics…”
“We’re not showing our baby Die Hard, Jake.” Amy had lost track of how many times she’d said this since before Mac was even born.
“He’s too young to even understand the violence, it’ll fly right over his head!”
In the end, Jake won the party argument while Amy won the movie one. Instead of going out (and instead of traumatising their baby with Die Hard), they cosied up to watch Elf, whilst eating Christmas cookies that Karen brought the last time she came over and they both agreed it was better than any “dumb fancy Christmas party” (Jake’s words, not Amy’s).

I received the glittery one. She was the one I didn't want because of the sequins and the 98 face tattoo, but actually she's so cute in person! The glitter eyeshadow is a bit much (so thick), but the colour palette is nice and her lips have a super cute gradient. 💞💖

Episode 91, part 2, this would be such a fun duel if it wasn’t for the murder #justYGOthings
Part 1, focusing on Mai’s flashback early in the episode, is here!
Shit’s already super fucked-up, Yami Malik stylz
Tumblr media
Mai can’t hear or see Anzu. I’m pretty sure this is a sop to the viewers to show where Anzu should be, and not actually what Mai sees.
But Mai is determined and battles onwards nonetheless.
Tumblr media
Wow that’s ... some name. And her attack is called Dance of Betrayal. #IblamePegasus
Yami Malik isn’t rattled by such things as counterattacks or human conversation.
Tumblr media
oh, fuck off, edgelord
you were never even really a child, you’re just a magical mental illness
Anyway, he’s quickly able to destroy Mai’s Monster, matching her move for move.
Tumblr media
... didn’t think I’d ever say this, but Yami Malik makes a good point.
But tragically, the upshot of Mai losing this Monster, and therefore another fragment of her own memory, is that glowing, floating memory!Jounouchi explodes like a wine glass that abruptly met a bullet
Tumblr media
Don’t worry, she copes well!
Tumblr media
lol jk
T___T
(right before the exploding-Jounouchi is when she has her flashback, which I recapped separately, when she realises what’s about to happen)
Meanwhile Jounouchi doesn’t even know why Mai’s no longer responding to his (near-constant) yelling
Tumblr media
“How the hell would I know?”
Tumblr media
Wait HOW THE HELL DID HE KNOW??
Can he see the illusions? Yami Malik says only the people in the game can, but, as we’re about to see, he doesn’t account for Yami’s dark magic abilities elsewhere.  Can he somehow sense what’s happening? Or does he read Mai as well as Yami Malik does, and also read Yami Malik, and guess that that’s what’s happening?
... Wait didn’t Yami Malik TELL Mai out loud with words what’s happening? So then this changes from “Yami’s incredible control of dark magic or Yami’s superlative observation skills?” to “why the fuck is everyone else so fucking dense?”
Either way, Yami says that outsiders can’t interfere with a Dark Game...
Tumblr media
YEAHHHH :D I fuckin love when Yami gets all Dark Sorcerer up in other people’s business
Yami Malik is not delighted.
Tumblr media
WHY IS HE CALLING HIM YUGI FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS RIGHT AND GOOD AND NARRATIVELY CONSISTENT WHY THE FUCKITY FUCKING FUCK CAN NO ONE GET THIS RIGHT I SWEAR TO THE GODS OF WRITING-SHIT-THAT-MAKES-ANY-KIND-OF-SENSE I COULD NOT BE MORE ENRAGED BY THE COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISREGARD THE WRITERS PAY TO THE FACT THAT MOST OF THESE FUCKING FUCKERS KNOW. DAMN. WELL. THAT THE MAGIC-WIELDING DUEL-WINNING SMACK-TALKING ROYAL-ASS ASS IS THE GODDAMN PHARAOH AND NOT IN FACT “””YUGI””” YOU FUCKING MOTHER-FUCKING-FUCKERS
fucks sake
anyway
Yami butts in to the floating green void that idk symbolises the Dark Game somehow and delivers some motivational slogans to Mai
Tumblr media
He tells her that the horrible things that are happening are illusions based on her fears. She listens and starts to feel hopeful again, and it jogs her memory, although imperfectly: she’s now able to hear Jounouchi but not see or remember him.
Tumblr media
well that’s sweet!
Just in case things get too sweet and touching, Yami Malik moves on to Phase 2: The Kinky Shit
Tumblr media
great.
It’s the emphasis on “slowly” that makes this weird.
Tumblr media
.... I’m just saying, he’s DEFINITELY getting off on this. Good to know he’s a masochist as well as a sadist. Or maybe this is like, an emotional-control kink as a Dom? idk
Mai didn’t object to Yami visiting the green void, but she’s determined to do this herself.
Tumblr media
Jounouchi grabs Yami and asks him what the hell is going on, specifically what Yami Malik means by saying that, if Mai loses, she’ll fall into a “slumber”.

That’s... not a very informative answer.
But look at his body language: he stiffens up and looks away, turns his whole face away, so he’s not looking Jounouchi in the eyes. Even though he was perfectly comfortable identifying and even interfering in the Dark Game, he’s very uncomfortable talking about it here. I wonder if he’s ashamed of how he used to run his own Dark Games and inflict similar punishments on people, even though he thought at the time he was doing the right thing, while Yami Malik is pretty explicitly just really into fucking people up.

But when she summons it, it doesn’t exactly go the way she’d hoped and everyone is shocked
