So you know how evolution isn’t a guaranteed indicator of a Pokémon’s age, as evidenced by that one episode with the really old Treecko?
Tumblr media
Applying this concept to the world of PMD yields some hilarious implications. Especially when you apply it in a post-credits PMD2 AU where the Future Trio have set up shop in the present, and we get to see Dusknoir have a crisis when he realizes he’s been hunting down a tween and a college student for the past who-knows-how-long.

Enemies to lovers is nice, I like it, but there is nothing on this Earth that will make me more of a rabid animal than enemies to found family, and the subsequent guilt for ever having been an enemy to the one they've now vowed to protect as their own. I will shatter

It's genuinely hilarious to me that Dadnoir is taking off so much in the fandom recently, considering I've been writing Dadnoir for like
-checks notes- nearly four years before now
and have been completely convinced nobody would like it

The Ruby pokedex entry for Duskull just adds an extra layer of pain for Dusknoir in EoS.

When All is Said and Done
Cinnamon was running through Apple Woods. She could feel the wind rushing through her fur and the terror in her veins as she ran. She wasn’t sure why she was running - maybe someone was chasing her? Maybe she had to get somewhere extremely quickly and that’s why she was running? Who knew - certainly not Cinnamon.
Chip, Ace and Flame were nowhere to be found either. In fact, the entirety of Apple Woods was just… empty, which was incredibly weird. Cinnamon couldn’t stop to think about it, though. She needed to keep running.
All of a sudden, Dusknior’s voice was super close. She couldn’t make out the words, nor the emotion behind them, but her fear spiked higher and she realized that she was no longer in Apple Woods, but instead on a cliff. She skidded to a stop and whipped around, fur standing on end as she faced the looming shadow that she used to see as her dad.
She started to cry as Dusknior came ever closer, reaching out to grab her, eye into a slit and emotionless like how it was when he was trying to kill Chip and her. She was shaking, not sure what to do. On both paths lie certain death.
Finally, she sent a prayer up to Arceus for safety and jumped off the cliff, unable to face Dusknior - the Pokemon she trusted and wanted to live with, happily ever after - as he would most likely kill her. As she was going to hit the ground…
… she woke up, safe in her nest, shaking, terrified, sobbing. The first face she saw was Dusknior’s as he shook her awake, and instinctively she flinched and sobbed harder. As she registered her surroundings, though, she remembered that the betrayal had been years ago, and she was actually adopted by Dusknior to help him forgive himself for what he had done to her all those years ago.
When she finally remembered, she lept into Dusknior’s arms, burying her face into his chest as she sobbed. Dusknior didn’t ask her to explain - he could see it for himself when she was still stuck in the dreamscape mindset. Instead, he held her and rocked her slightly from side to side, whispering a lullaby that Celebi taught him.
Soon, he could feel Cinnamon’s breath steady, then slow, as she drifted off to sleep once more.

@jsab-fujii has made so much amazing Dadnoir content and now I can't stop thinking about him.
I think right when Dusknoir revealed his motivations for trying to stop them, Venus (hero) would be a lot less mad at him. Despite her being willing to sacrifice herself to save the world, she definitely understands the fear that came with it. She understands why that fear would push Dusknoir into doing everything he did. And after everything, she never stopped caring about him.

Welp, might have to go through my tumblr settings to fix that, but anyway-
favorite thing about them
His motivations. Special Episode 5 is the best thing to happen to Dusknoir, cuz it gave him so much character. At first, we all thought he was just an evil villain, but naw, he's just... scared. Like, he's a ghost type. Dying is probably no big deal to him. But being completely erased? Removed from reality? That's different. That's terrifying.
Plus, you can tell that he does care about people. He's kind to everyone in the past. He goes out of his way to save Hero and Partner from the Luxray/Manetric tribe, even though he gains nothing from it. He's a genuinely nice person. He just... doesn't want to be erased.
I love a good pure evil villain every now and then, but characters like Dusknoir will always find a place in my heart. People who aren't cruel or malicious, but misguided or scared, who just need someone to be kind and give them a second chance. Always gonna grab my heart.
least favorite thing about them
...listen man, dragging kids into the future and immediately moving to execute them isn't a good look for you. Really puts a damper on your dad vibes. Especially since Partner really wasn't a threat to your survival. Hero you can kinda justify, but c'mon man, Partner did nothing but be kind to you. They don't deserve that.

brOTP
I really like the idea that Dusknoir and Partner get close. Both because it makes sense that the person he spends the most time with in the past becomes a genuine friend, and because it makes his betrayal even more heartbreaking.
OTP
I am not immune to Future Trio Polycule propaganda.
nOTP
Hmmmm... nothing comes to mind really? Dusknoir doesn't really have any ships outside of the Future Trio. Which makes sense, cuz why would he? Those three are great together!
random headcanon
I love the idea that Dusknoir used to be friends with Hero before they met Grovyle, but turned his back on them to work for Dialga once they started talking about changing the past out of fear. Just really drive that nail in a bit further, ya'know?
unpopular opinion
Listen, I love DadNoir, but I do think people can make him a bit too soft with Hero & Partner every now and then. He's still a pretty grizzled gay (That was supposed to be "guy" but I mistyped and I'm leaving it cuz it's still true but anyway). There are ways to soften him up and give him dad vibes without turning him into a puddle of marshmallow jelly.
song i associate with them
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears. Especially once SE5 kicks in and we get to see who Dusky Boi really is. Talking about how nothing lasts forever, then immediately singing "Everybody wants to rule the world"? Peak vibes.
favorite picture of them
Ah c'mon, is this even a question? It's gotta be the classic.

It's fun to think about why humans are chosen in PMD. Anyways, here's a short one-shot about just that!
Why us?
She was the latest in a short line of heroes. One had stopped a meteor large enough to destroy the earth. Another had prevented the collapse of time itself. The third brought hope, and warmth, back into to the world. All life would have ended, if the Tree of Life had've been pulled into the sun, but still, someone saved them.
Those heroes had overcome insurmountable odds. How? It didn't seem possible. When the world was threatened a human appeared and saved everyone. She couldn't possibly measure up.
Their figures were carved in an ornate marble statue, water pooling around the base. The stone courtyard was slick with rain, and few Pokemon were in the street.
Sighing, Vulpix jumped onto a bench and gazed upon the statue. Her tails flicked and her shoulders were hunched. 'Why me?'
She listened for a long time, but heard no reply. Things had always followed the same pattern. A human would appear with no memory, befriend a local, and lead some ridiculous adventure until the world was saved. Everyone knew the tales, they were legendary, and for a moment she had dared to think she would join them but instead, she sat, alone in the rain, waiting for ghosts to answer.
Her brows furrowing, she bared her teeth at the statue. 'Why me, huh? Why any of us? Am I so different from them?' Her voice rising, her fur bristled and stood on end. 'What made them so special? Were they that much stronger than me!'
'On the contrary.'
She jumped at the voice, hissing involuntarily. Claws out, she whipped around to find a large grey Pokemon stroking his chin, a Dusknoir.
'Pardon me,' he chuckled, 'I did not mean to frighten you.'
Her ears drooping, she shook her head and released a long breath. 'That, that's alright.'
'You know,' he mused. 'It is a strange thing, that a human should be needed to save us Pokemon.'
Her eyes growing wide, she glanced at Dusknoir. He wore a wide smile, and a thousand yard stare, as if lost in memories. After a moment, he chuckled again. 'Humans are terribly weak. They cannot fly, or breathe fire, or achieve near anything a Pokemon can. I believe that is why humans save us, time and again.'
'I don't follow,' she said carefully, eyeing the stranger.
'A human does not any special powers. All they have is their humanity. Their compassion, willpower, and love.'
A sudden snarl upon her lips, she glared at Dusknoir. 'Pokemon have those things too!'
'Exactly!' Dusknoir pointed at the statue. 'Pokemon have those things too. In addition to everything they already have. Humans have only what they are, and those around them. Pokemon evolve all at once; strength, physique, potential. Humans are different. They are in a constant state of evolution. Each moment fuels what they will become because they have nothing else. Only hope, their humanity, and their need to become something greater. Thus, their potential is near infinite.'
Her chest felt tight, and she fought to keep the tears from eyes, hoping if nothing else, the rain would mask her emotion.
Dusknoir's gaze softened and he smiled fondly upon the statue, upon the second hero. 'Perhaps a human only becomes a Pokemon to allow them to better connect, better fit in our world. Perhaps they already had everything they needed. The only thing missing was connection, a bridge, between them and us.'
She wanted to respond, to say something, but no words could fit past the lump in her throat.
Rising slowly, Dusknoir turned to leave. 'Humans are terribly weak. That is why it is such a joy to see them thrive. Little one, I cannot wait to see what you become. I am certain you will be great, and if you are not, that is okay too. After all, you are only human.'
