On This Day In Royal History . 24 May 1854 . Prince Louis of Battenberg was born . Louis was born as Ludwig Alexander von Battenberg in Graz, Styria, the eldest son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine by his morganatic marriage to Countess Julia von Hauke. . ◼ Although born in Austria, & brought up in Italy & Germany, he enrolled in the United Kingdom's Royal Navy at the age of fourteen. Queen Victoria & her son King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, occasionally intervened in his career: the Queen thought that there was “a belief that the Admiralty are afraid of promoting Officers who are Princes on account of the radical attacks of low papers & scurrilous ones”. However, Louis welcomed assignments that provided opportunities for him to acquire the skills of war & to demonstrate to his superiors that he was serious about his naval career. . ◼ Posts on royal yachts & tours arranged by the Queen & Edward actually impeded his progress, as his promotions were perceived as undeserved royal favours. .. ◼ After a naval career lasting more than forty years, in 1912 he was appointed First Sea Lord, the professional head of the British naval service. With World War I looming, he took steps to ready the British fleet for combat, but his background as a German prince forced his retirement once the war began, when anti-German sentiment was running high. He changed his name & relinquished his German titles, at the behest of King George V, in 1917. .. ◼ He married a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, & was the father of Queen Louise of Sweden & Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who also served as First Sea Lord from 1954 to 1959. . ◼ He is the maternal grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, consort of Queen Elizabeth II. . . . #Onthisdayinhistory #Thisdayinhistory #theyear1854 #d24may #OnThisDay #PrinceLouis #LouisofBattenberg #History #AdmiraloftheFleet #RoyalNavy #BritishMonarchy #RoyalHistory #Prince #historians #Navy #Otd #bornonthisday #dreadnaught #royals #RoyalFamily #Vintagephoto #vintagephotography #RoyalCollection #Mountbatten #Historyfacts (at Graz, Austria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAlEFaZD90i/?igshid=oez67gn10pk7

On This Day In Royal History . 24 May 1892 . . Prince George (later king George V) was created Duke of York, Earl of Inverness & Baron Killarney by Queen Victoria on 24 May 1892. . ◼ Prince George succeeded as George V in 1910 upon his father’s death, & his titles merged with the crown. . ◼ The Duke of York is a title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. . ◼ Since the 15th century, it has, when granted, usually been given to the second son of English (later British) monarchs. . ◼ The equivalent title in the Scottish peerage was Duke of Albany. However, King George I & Queen Victoria granted the second sons of their eldest sons the titles Duke of York and Albany & Duke of York respectively. . ◼ Initially granted in the 14th century in the Peerage of England, the title Duke of York has been created eight times. The title Duke of York and Albany has been created three times. These occurred during the 18th century, following the 1707 unification of the Kingdom of England & Kingdom of Scotland into a single, united realm. The double naming was done so that a territorial designation from each of the previously separate realms could be included. . ◼ Other notable Duke of York’s include King Edward IV; Henry VIII; Charles I; James II & George VI. . ◼ The title was created for the eighth time for Prince Andrew, second son of Queen Elizabeth II. At present (2018), he only has two daughters. Thus, if he has no future (legitimate) sons, the title will again become extinct at his death. . Did you know? . Aside from the first creation, every time the Dukedom of York has been created it has had only one occupant, that person either inheriting the throne or dying without male heirs. . . . #Onthisdayinhistory #Thisdayinhistory #theyear1892 #d24may #HisMajesty #GeorgeV #KingGeorgeV #HouseofWindsor #RoyalFamily #BritishMonarchy #TheKing #GSTK #Vintagephoto #vintagephotography #Royals #Majesty #HistoryFacts #Monarch #monarchy #britishroyalty #OnThisDay #RoyalHistory #King #windsor #buckinghampalace #kensingtonpalace #TheBritishMonarchy #GodSaveTheKing #History #otd (at Buckingham Palace, London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAlE6MUDBpx/?igshid=1fg48h27bq3aj

Queen Victoria was born on This Day 200 years ago 👑 . . 👑 On 20 June 1837, William IV died at the age of 71, & Victoria became Queen of the United Kingdom. . 👑 In her diary she wrote, "I was awoke at 6 o'clock by Mamma, who told me the Archbishop of Canterbury & Lord Conyngham were here & wished to see me. I got out of bed & went into my sitting-room (only in my dressing gown) & alone, & saw them. Lord Conyngham then acquainted me that my poor Uncle, the King, was no more, & had expired at 12 minutes past 2 this morning, & consequently that I am Queen." . 👑 Official documents prepared on the first day of her reign described her as Alexandrina Victoria, but the first name was withdrawn at her own wish & not used again. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1819 #D24may #EmpressofIndia #QueenVictoria  #HerMajesty #HouseofHanover #Royalfamily #BritishMonarchy #GodSaveTheQueen #Victorian #Art #RoyalArt #Majesty #majestic #TheQueen #VictorianEra #historyfacts #Historic #throne #Crown #Monarch #Royalhistory #GreatBritain Royal Collection Trust/© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2019 (at United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx219j6AmZq/?igshid=qz4soltxabm2
