The Lore of Dogs

This is a project I did last year and it was incredibly fun, I also found out dogs are not my strong suit but it fits the theme in a way (lol).

I plan on making this a mini comic to sell at CXC next year.

Last year I worked for the first time as the writer half of a writer-artist team on a short comic! Tessa Luicart aka @that.artist.tess on insta illustrated this story for the Columbus College of Art and Design Spitball anthology. Our collaboration can be found in volume 9. Like many young writers raised on diets of Eurocentric fantasy stories my first attempt at long form fiction was sudo-medieval fantasy. I did an astonishing amount of visual research for this comic, seduced by the aesthetics.

But I struggled with what felt like an unmanageable plot. At times, thumbnailing this story felt like wading through mud. Other times, I pictured myself hacking a path through a jungle.

I labored and sweated to clear a passage through the wilderness. I felt as if I was uncovering a path, a plot, that only I could see. I didn’t question whether writing needed to feel like so much WORK. When a well respected literary agent told me the story was half-baked and unpublishable, I was devastated. I’d already drawn over a hundred pages.

After much hard thought, I decided to set the story aside. In my newly freed creative time, I started to write memoir. I was shocked by how quickly it flowed out of me. It wasn’t EASY exactly- but the pages poured out of me like water.

Instead of wading, I was skipping easily from scene to scene. Now, I pay attention to how it FEELS to work on a story. If it feels like I’m back in the mud, I have taken a wrong turn. Or else the story isn’t ready yet to be told. When the story is READY the path reveals itself.

With MONICA (Fantagraphics), legendary cartoonist Daniel Clowes has pushed the limits of his storytelling and art to make one of the great graphic novels of the decade. We sat down during CXC weekend to talk this amazing, haunting, hilarious book and how it grew out of his attempts at trying to figure out his childhood, the ways in which MONICA is haunted by the deaths of cartoonists Richard Sala and Gary Leib (oh, and those of Daniel's brother and mom), what art, community and mortality have come to mean to him, and how certain panels took him 5 years to draw. We get into what he's learned from using multiple genres within a single book, the artists who influenced him and the ones he had to escape, the 7-year gap from his previous book, PATIENCE, and what's changed, and his late-stage depression at finishing MONICA. We also discuss how he was always awaiting the shift from pamphlet-comics to hardcover original books, how thankful he was to not be good enough to get work at Marvel or DC in his youth, what it's like writing and drawing his books without any editorial input, his only takeaway from writing for movies, the Americanness of his comics, why he prefers drawing over writing even though A) he's a really good writer and B) would never draw from someone else's script, the only advice he would ever give young artists, and a lot more. just wanted to say that i’ve been enjoying the latest updates of cleveland quixotic a ton. obviously you set out to confront and subvert plenty of the tropes that show up in isekai, though the gradual annihilation of the main character’s love interests was pretty shocking :<

i had honestly hoped that viviendre and lalum would come to accept their differences and embrace their similarities, then realize that they weren’t truly opponents and help each other despite the grimness of their circumstances. despite my misplaced optimism, their deaths were really affecting, and the writing during that scene was a stand-out. the earlier dialogue of mammon/ashtoreth/rimmon where they lament their lost pasts really elevated the plight of viviendre and lalum, and the “cursed” natures they never deserved.

anyway, here’s a doodle of perfidia and kedeshah. as an aside, my friend who’s starting cq is also a fan of helluva boss, and she commented that perfidia had “blitzo energy.” i believe that’s high praise lol

Since you brought up Helluva Boss, here's a little anecdote:

A friend of mine collaborated with Vivziepop prior to Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss, back when she was mainly doing web comics and short animations. This collaboration apparently didn't go well and my friend harbored a lot of resentment toward Vivziepop. So when Hazbin Hotel came out, my friend made me (hate-)watch it with her. She seethed about Vivziepop the entire time before grumblingly and reluctantly admitting at the end that the episode was pretty good. This incident became the initial inspiration for Mimmy Wowzers in Cockatiel x Chameleon and Van Der Gramme's complicated feelings about her.
