It’s been a great week, no mobile phone signal, on residential with KES in Patterdale/ Lake District. We have had the most brilliant time. On the hill, gorge scrambling, climbing, canoeing and caving (In Yorkshire on the way up). As a ex outdoor education centre instructor I’ve heard it many times “teachers have it easy” they are there “to just keep an eye on the children”. Try jumping into the teachers shoes?. I do think it would be good for outdoor instructional staff to jump that fence and spend a whole week with a school as part of the residential. This week I’ve been up at 5.45 ish each day, to bed at 11 (with some staff to bed later into the early hours. As I rise early they would sleep in a little later as I do breakfast duties. It’s all a team effort. Absolutely brilliant week, much respect goes to Chris for the detailed organisation, I’ve worked with for years a dedicated member of school staff who works a problem until a solution is found. We also had former pupils, teaching staff and parents helping this week. Which has been amazing. The dedication is outstanding from everyone. William Shrewsbury PS teacher training this afternoon/ evening. Absolutely brilliant, on arrival I see a teacher packing away her outdoor Ed area, I ask how was last weeks training? Answer “I never thought I would be out for a whole day delivering around a fire etc”. Now that’s the power of quality instruction, and a partnershipnof listening to the clients needs. I asked a class of Yr4 children today what have you learned/ going to take away from the last 6 weeks. One says I know how to make a beef burger and cook it safely. One says how to make quick bread and know when it’s cooked. One says how to make fire in any weather. Then one says “patience”. “Things don’t happen immediately”. “You have to wait and watch” Could you ask for a better answer? This was Yr4 at St Joseph’s CA today. Bringing all the skills bases together with a challenge, no help. Mega thanks to Joanne Clarkson just for being brilliant. Then if things couldn’t stay in that level Yr3. Just as epic, these even relayed what we did before Christmas, as if they could remember the detail and they just kept in layering in the details. Bread, yeasted. Fire in bad weather Maps, cartography 4 fig, grid references, The list was endless and we ran out of time. Unbelievable to be honest!
